Andy Burnham, mayor of Manchester, won a parliamentary by-election with 55% of the vote, ten percentage points more than the winning Labour candidate obtained in that seat in the 2024 general election. It seems voters are desperate to push Starmer out of power.

Speaking of the Sun, today, June 19th, is the shortest of two local maxima of the apparent solar day. These occur close to the solstices, with the Dec. one being the longest. Anyway, the apparent solar day, the time between successive high noons, will be about 13.1 seconds longer than 24 hours. The apparent solar day will then continue to decrease reaching the yearly minimum around the Autumn equinox. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 19, 2026 04:56 AM (w6EFb) 15

Evening and morning, all! 'Tis Friday at last, the consummation devoutly to be wished! And a holiday for some, so there's that.
I made the mistake of looking at the current weather conditions on the CBS outlet's website. The temp is 81, heat index is 94 effin' degrees at 4:30 am. Gawd I want out of here --!!! The day has started off poorly on another front. I forgot to set up my coffee water and grounds last night, so I had to do that just now and am waiting until I can pour a cup. It's minor, but it's a harbinger of worse things, I'll bet. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 19, 2026 05:31 AM (wzUl9) 31

On the plus side, the changing out of fuel injectors ion the Volvo wagon started out very well yesterday.
On the minus side, due to age and brittleness, part of the plastic end flange on two of them broke into tiny pieces, falling down the injector ports and next to the intake valves. On the plus side, I was able to extract the easily visible small chinks without any further disassembly. On the minus side, the borescope showed two of the intake valves still had small chinks of plastic sitting next to them, requiring removal of the intake manifold. On the plus side, the manifold came off rather easily, and I was able to remove the remaining chunks from both intake ports, including a larger piece that wasn't visible until the intake was off. On the minus side, I don't have a new intake gasket, and the new one won't arrive till tomorrow afternoon. And so on...... Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at June 19, 2026 05:42 AM (iMotb) 43

I got a (semi urgent) prompt doctor appointment (primary care) with a huge organization. Per Murphy’s law, they gave me a prompt time on the only day in the next two months that I was scheduled out of town for family get-together. So, contacting huge organization for a change is durn near impossible. Plus the huge organization is abusive to primary care docs, and I don’t want to mess up his productivity statistics.

Sorry. I know that you enjoy your walks. I enjoy mine as well . Yesterday I saw a morning glory plant as well as some tiny weed with a flower the size of a top of my fingernail with some shade of purple. When I came back to look for it I couldn't find it again . When the weather is too cold or too hot go to the market and get a small cart and bring a bag and walk up and down the aisles for about half an hour or so . Eventually I find something I need, but the store security overhead may think I'm nuts. 😉. I don't belong to a gym, so at least it's exercise. @31/Warai-otoko: "Ever get the feeling that all those "land acknowledgement statements" are ultimately just a flex?"
I think it's an intentional strife-and-conflict generator to pit one group of citizens against another, and keep people fighting amongst themselves. With news coming out about how much tax revenues are filtered directly to fraud, were the people not divided, their ire would rightfully turn on the politicians stealing so much from us to line their pockets. Divide-and-conquer continues to be the best defensive strategy for the leviathan. Second cup of coffee. In a few minutes I'll change and stretch, and hit the workout trail: slower and shorter, thanks to the heat. More walking than trotting, in other words. I'll bring water with me, of course.
My new Casio watch with stopwatch function works quite well: a button press gives a bright dial light that lets me see the elapsed time easily. My older Casio illuminates only the left half of the dial, the minutes elapsed. I need to see the seconds to know how I'm doing. There is a vast difference between 10:05 and 10:50. @Wolfus: Keep a towel with you in bed. Next time Stirling wakes you up, see if you can grab him by the scruff of the neck and then wrap him up tightly in the towel, lay back down and hold him (now prevented from moving) against you while you lay still and pretend to go back to sleep (you won't be able to due to the kitty's struggling) but it should make the point to him that waking you is a BAD idea.

I like late night shopping to search out interesting markdowns and exercise. Annoyingly, the stores in my area have been cutting back their hours. First, Vons/Albertsons, one of the two 400 pound gorillas of the region, starting closing at 10 PM at all but one location that was expected to close last year due to a merger. The other player in that proposed merger was Kroger, whose Ralphs chain is the other 400 pound gorilla in these parts. Nearly all of their stores used to be open until 1 AM. Added bonus for my gym, open 24 hours on weekdays, is in the same plaza as one of those Ralphs. They're gradually adding more store to the close at midnight list.
I miss when supermarkets in a section of town would take turns staying open 24/7, as a form of community service. I can distinctly remember being horribly bored and awake on a summer night and going over at 2 AM to find a book to read. Back then, there used to be a good chance of finding something decent, like John Steakley's 'Armor'. A few years later, I'd have my own car and could go down to Hollywood for the big 24 hour newsstand and bookstore at the corner of Hollywood and Cahuenga. @56/Wolfus: Casio 3488 on my wrist. Good watch, decent price.
Only two minor quips I have with it: a) The glass isn't glass, it's some sort of hardened plastic so it does get scratched b) It gains a second or two every week. That last one is easy enough to deal with. It has a good "set seconds to zero" function. You push the button in time set mode, and the seconds are reset to zero. If Seconds was at 29 or less when you did it, the minute stays the same. If at 30 or above, it bumps the minute forward by one. Makes it real easy to get the time set accurately right to the second against the accurate time. I'd definitely buy another one of these if this one ever breaks. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 19, 2026 06:08 AM (O7YUW) 64
Tommy's, which was like In'n'Out with just a handful of locations then, was ahead of the curve in being open 24/7. So a triple chili burger was a requirement for the outing.
