Over 250 Corvettes descended upon Detroit’s Belle Isle on Flag Day last Sunday to form a giant American flag and raise money for four veterans’ charities. Obviously, there was a need for Corvettes in red, white, and blue, and those made up the majority of the flag, but some other colors formed the flag pole on which Old Glory flew. While as many as 450 Vettes were hoped for, a count of the flag showed 295, which is still impressive. The event was known as—and T-shirts proclaimed it—“Corvettes on the Island.” It was organized by Larry and Verna Courtney of Michigan Corvette Events, a Michigan-based nonprofit that supports food pantries and veterans groups. The Courtneys are well known in Corvette circles for enthusiast-driven events including Corvettes on Woodward, Corvettes on the Island at Belle Isle, and leadership roles in the National Corvette Caravan. “This homegrown Michigan effort is built by the Corvette community itself with owners expected from across the country for an ambitious Flag Day tribute celebrating America 250, and honoring veterans,” read a release on the event.Very cool.

A-list actor Tom Hanks took a surprise shot at MS NOW while attending the ceremonial opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on Thursday.
Hanks, 69, found himself face to face with a reporter from the network shortly after arriving.
MS NOW Senior National and Political Correspondent Jacob Soboroff was streaming live and approached Hanks.
‘Great to see you,’ Soboroff said, eagerly attempting to get Hanks’ attention.
The actor appeared busy, but eventually acknowledged Soboroff after some light pestering.
He broke the silence with a quip: ‘What can I do for the 800 people watching MS NOW?’ – a nod to the network’s waning viewership.

I've been reading Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile." 140 pages into it and no one is dead yet. She's spending her sweet time setting up all the possible murderers, each of whom has a motivation to kill the victim.
The victim is sort of clueless. Not someone who deserves to die, but rather self-absorbed and doesn't see how her behavior affects those around her.

Just finished watching a Bette Davis noir-type thriller from 1951, Another Man's Poison, in which she stars with her then-husband Gary Merrill. Nice twisty murder flick based on a stage play. Never a dull moment.
Tomorrow I'm taking vid tours of two more houses. One is a two-story place with hardwood floors, 3 BR/1.5 BA, a big living room and big dining room, basement, and garage, bedrooms upstairs. Unfortunately it's right up at the ceiling of my price range; I don't know if I can spring for it.
The other is a small 2 BR /1 BA with a rear patio and deck, all the floors done, a basement and a 2-car garage. Much better price than the other. But I hate the big glass patio door/window at the back, which will get sunlight a good part of the day in summer and leak heat in the winter. Every apartment or condo or house I've seen in the South has one, and I hate them.

Just wanted to make sure. That was NOT the actual capsule used by Artemis II (Integrity), but a training/testing mockup. Still not something the general public gets to crawl around much.
The real capsule is down at KSC, in the MPPF facility undergoing post flight analysis and all that stuff. No, they wouldn't let the public near the real thing, might mess something up.

Searching around, moving things to try to flush it out didn't work. Reluctantly, we opened the doors, turned out the lights, and went to sleep, trusting our angels to protect us.
In the morning, I heard it buzzing behind the curtains at the window. MiladyJo, mighty hunter, gooshed it. (Her track record of successful kills has her invited on many a safari. Like that karate guy catching a fly with chopsticks.)
A stain on the curtain was a small price to pay for genetic management victory.
I hate horseflies. I'll always remember one buzzing me in the shallow end of the swimming pool, and I ducked under the water and swam all the way to the far end, popped my head out, and there it was, still buzzing me. Nasty things. Glad they don't seem to be as prominent hereabouts as they were in my yout'.

Stairlift, I has one... main bath is upstairs and hubby couldn't manage it any more. Money well spent-- he used it for 4 years. It's there if I ever need it. Weight limit on ours is 300#, cost in 2021 was $4k installed. (Had to have a dedicated 15A circuit which was not a problem) Has its own battery backup, supposedly good for ~20 trips if power goes out but we never needed it that much.
Very handy for taking heavy things up/down too! LOL. Installer said one of his customers used theirs to haul bags of mortar mix & boxes of tile when they did some bathroom work.

Federal contracts have the Miller Act which prohibits mechanics liens of federal property by contractors. It also requires the BC get a payment and performance bond. The subs who aren't paid have to duke it out with the bond company.
States usually have a "Mini" Miller Act.
Any private interest can require this too.
A MINIMAL contractor would advertise such as well.
The Obamalisk ? One would think they had enough sense to require a payment bond. A money pit that deep there are probably lot of disputes.

Got the yard mowed & watered, and pulled a few weeds today. Trimmed one rose bush (it's a start!) and cleaned out the 'bulb bed' of dried foliage.

Of late, I've gotten quite fascinated with the Younger Dryas, the Impact Hypothesis, which is quite controversial, more so than you'd expect. And I learn stuff I didn't know that I'm ashamed I didn't know.
SC here has very few natural lakes. The big ones are all man-made. But it has a few natural and shallow ones. One is White Pond, a shallow (2m) body of water of about 66 acres. It's a little over 30K years old, and contains a fantastic record in the form of sediments.
And it has a big flashing red Younger Dryas story to tell. Christopher Moore, University of SC, studies that, and found a big platinum spike in that sediment which has been dated right at the start of the Younger Dryas.

Does this manifest as a noise, or as a vibration you feel. Two wheel drive, or 4X4? If you have a limited-slip rear axle that is locking up prematurely, you might feel/hear a rear end shudder from that.

You can also look at the "south carolina bays" which are argued to be wind erosion sites that left elliptical basins that all point towards Michigan. Or they could be secondary impact sites from a bolide that hit around Michigan

Is i felt equally with right turns and left? A wheel bearing, or tire with a belt separation should be more noticeable when on the outside of a turn, and that wheel is loaded more. Don't overlook something simple, like loose lug nuts!

Don't hold me to this exactly, but I think the best dating for the Younger Drays onset is 12,900 ya. Some dating of the Carolina Bays puts right at that. But that is disputed.
There's also a "radiant" of these things. The long axis of the ellipses seems to all point at a spot near Saginaw Bay.

Classic test for wheel bearing: jack up the wheel in question, place a hand on the bumper or some part of the frame, and give the wheel a good spin. If the bearing is bad, your hand will feel a rumble being telegraphed through the frame. It is a surprisingly sensitive test.
Assuming NOT a 4X4, the bearing cups are pressed into the hub of the brake drum or rotor, and the cones with rollers set in the cups; inner cone backed up by the spindle should that the grease seal rides on, and the outer cone by the spindle nut and washer. A wheel bearing change is pretty easy. You need no special tools; a hammer and small brass drift will knock the cups out of the hub. Look for a Youtube video.

Grooaannnn. Someone brought my mother a Peace Lily at Easter. I was staying at her place at the time, so I kept it watered -- not overwatered, just watered. I left for a while, with my sister and niece in charge. THEY LET IT WILT LIKE BOILED SPINACH. I felt awful for the plant, cut away all the sticks and stalks, and got this superstitious idea that all plants are happier in the ground.
Knowing my red thumb, I asked the gardener to plant it. He did. It withered down to nubs. I asked him to dig it up and put it back in a pot. He did -- I think. I don't think that's the lily that's in the pot but I can't tell because it's just nubs.
That poor friend who gave it to my mother. If he comes to visit again, I'm going to buy another lily and pretend it's his.
So, not exactly blue bells and cockleshells all in a pretty row.

It's also close to another curious shift in the ice-age cycle timings. Before about 1 Mya, that cycle was dominated by the 41K yr obliquity cycle. After that, it shifted to the 100K yr eccentricity cycle. This is a mystery still, as the obliquity cycle should have much stronger effects.

Finally made it here tonight - started work on yet another stocking, this time for an as-yet-unborn grandson. Right now, he is in a test tube; DD#3 and hubby are doing IVF, and they are getting close to having their first embryo implanted. Prayers for a successful procedure and pregnancy would be greatly appreciated!
Hopefully I will get to meet this one; they have to wait a year between pregnancies, so I might never get to meet the granddaughter that they will be trying for after that. However, she already has a stocking; I just have to add her name and make a label to go inside of it.
Hope everyone had a blessed day; I may be a bit scarce while I try to get this stocking finished!
