The Flynn Effect is a long-observed but unexplained finding in psychology that mean IQ even in developed nations has been rising by around 3 points per decade.

Note that this hasn't put a pause on graduations; more degrees are being handed out than ever before.

More flagrantly detrimental to learning, plenty more use the tech to generate entire essays and solve math problems - or, in a word, cheat. That many universities have partnered with tech companies to provide students with access to their shiny AI models has only served to rubber stamp and accelerate the tech's adoption in the classroom, marooning individual instructors to figure out how to work around AI on their own.
It seems the author went there too.

It appears the Flynn Effect faltered in the early 2000s. Before I get too smug about that, it seems to have dropped off in Australia by the 1980s.

Access to Mythos was always restricted by Anthropic itself. Access to Fable is still open to any US citizen on US soil with a Claude account. (I had access for a couple of days.)

Update: Thanks to reader Defenestratus for prompting me to actually read the whiny self-serving glurge that Anthropic put out discussing the situation. Both models are now unavailable globally.

17 The local utility co. came by yesterday to upgrade various things in the apartments. A digital A/C and heat thermostat, new higher-flow nozzles for the kitchen and shower taps, some insulation for the pipes off the water heater, and a new power strip -- all free, they say.

We'll see if this saves me any $$. The water here is paid and there is no gas, so it's all about the electrics.

37 Since I had day off yesterday I went with spouse through some lovely farmland together to the depot to have some repairs made on the bus. There was a whole mass of cornflowers near their mailbox. Lovely!

I like the mechanic up there. He is a youngish guy-comparatively speaking ( late 30's or early 40's ) and he does a good job, is nice and has a great sense of humor

I always enjoyed seeing the crops the farmers planted come up, and in some cases how quickly it happened! You don't notice it unless you drive by there every weekday.

60 My sweet tabby cat Chloe died a week ago. 15 years old. She had gone out to do her thing Tuesday night and I found her in the morning dead on the driveway. I was completely shocked because I didn't realize she was close to death and she hadn't been in a fight because she was lying flat on her side like she was just driving down for a nap. But there is a little mystery because it looked like the neighbor's cat had licked her for her and a ball of loose fur rolled up about the size of a small apple was next to her back and her little collar had been popped off. My aunt thinks she got in a fight but I sure hope she didn't and there was no sign of any injury or blood or scratches or fur being torn out. I think that what happened was that she lay down and passed away and the neighbor cat just came up to an investigated the body and worried at it. Pretty heartbroken around here and my cat Daphne who was her Litter Mate has been roaming the house looking for for a week and will not sit next to me anymore.

Trek had room for broad comedy like that as well as drama ("Charlie X") and high adventure ("Balance of Terror") in its format.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. had almost as much room for different stories. Unfortunately the two broad comedies they did involved plots with Robert Vaughn's Solo Watusi-ing with a gorilla, and David McCallum's Illya disguising himself as a Yeti. Not kidding.

It hurts my heart that she died alone outside and that I did not know she was close to going. Apart from being a little bit clingier than normal, there was really no sign of any impending crisis. After the man took her body away I just sat in My Den and howled like an animal.

She and her sister have been with me through 15 very tough years, and it's been we three all the way. She was a beautiful, elegant tabby with Crystal green eyes. And a sweet sweet nature

No One, my condolences to you too. My cats have all been strictly indoor friends, and I have had to watch them decline while I did my best to make their last days good ones. Though Miss Linda's Siberian Angelique died suddenly overnight years ago.

I know cats tend to go off by themselves to die. I think she chose her own exit. 😞

79 My late black cat Wolf had been off his feed for a while in late 2021, but I was so focused on his brother Chekov and trying to get him better that I didn't notice. I got up from a nap on Saturday afternoon and found Wolf passed away on the kitchen floor. I should have taken him to the vet earlier, dammit.

Though they told me it was renal failure, and there probably was nothing they could have done in the long run. He was only twelve.

renal failure is common in older cats. They have some vaccine/therapy now that can extend cats' lives by quite a bit.

Beverly, they get attached to each other. My boyhood cat Rusty passed away at fourteen. The little tabby girl I'd brought home as a kitten when he was about ten, and had formed a strong bond with him, wandered all around the house for that next day, calling and clearly looking for him.

82 Cats are so good at compensating that they can crash without any real warning. And I think that since they hate the vet so much that if they had their druthers, they would rather do it on their own. Chloe didn't show signs of being in any pain and I hope that's the case. But thanks for the kind comments from everybody. It helps.

84 This talk of cats passing is sad. Condolences to you. It makes me sad not because I’m a cat person (I’m not)… but we got our daughter a cat when she was around 10 years old and that animal has been a Godsend and such a sweet presence in our daughter’s life for more than 12 years now. I can’t think about that sweet thing dying; it will be devastating for daughter. Ugh

88 Beverly, Chekov's fear of the vet was why I had a mobile vet come out to my place and take care of him at the last. He passed on my bed, at peace, with Linda and me petting him, with Russian classical music on the TV. (Well, that was for Linda, not Chekov, but it was the right gesture.)
