From Johnny Cadillac

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday night ONT. Big day today - Flag Day, President Trump's 80th birthday, The US Army's 251st birthday -- and even more noteworthy, it's National Bourbon Day!

Open thread, as always. Fashion and music, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

Man Eats Over 2 Pounds of Honey in One Minute, Sets New World Record

Honey is one of the most beloved foods on the planet, but can you imagine eating over two pounds of it in under a minute? You’re probably thinking that it can be done, but you’re probably overestimating your throat’s ability to handle viscous liquids. It’s not like drinking water or soda, and it’s not like ingesting solid foods, and that makes it really tricky.

Andre Ortolf, a young German man famous for taking on unusual eating and drinking challenges, recently set out to break the world record for the most honey consumed in a minute. His attempt took place in Augsburg, Germany, and saw him consume 1,273 grams, or 44.91 ounces, of honey in just 60 seconds. Talk about a sugar rush!

Patriotic Style Spotlight: Usha Vance + Red, White & Blue Styling Tips for the 250th! 🇺🇸

Today’s fashion review is a fun hodgepodge, starting with Second Lady Usha Vance’s latest looks and wrapping up with fresh ways to style red, white, and blue all summer long as we head toward America’s 250th celebration.

Usha Vance’s Maternity Glow-Up
Usha has been looking fresh in maternity wear! She stepped out in an adorable black-and-white gingham sundress by Ripe Maternity, paired with classic Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses in black on gold. The dress is sweet, breezy, and perfectly summery.

IMG_2010-rr.jpg

IMG_2009-rr.jpg

Shoe note: She wore her cap-toe ballet flats, which we have seen before. While they’re reliable, they feel a little safe and dated next to the charm of the dress. I would have loved to see her in something more elevated like these Rag & Bone espadrilles / sandals:

IMG_2013-rr.jpg

or sleek Vince slingback flats for a modern touch.

IMG_2014-rr.jpg

Later, she kept it cute and casual in Hatch maternity overalls with Goodr sunglasses in Pink Flamingo, such a cutie, relaxed vibe!

IMG_2008-rr.jpg

Red, White & Blue Styling Inspiration
Whether you’re heading to a parade, backyard BBQ, or fireworks, here’s how to wear the colors without looking like a costume:
Classic & Clean: A crisp white button-down or tee with tailored navy shorts and red accessories (belt, earrings, etc). Timeless and polished.
Gingham & Stripes: Mix red gingham with navy stripes. Gingham is definitely having a moment!
Modern Twist: All-white outfit with bold red/white/blue statement jewelry.
Casual Cool: White jeans + red tank + navy blazer or chambray shirt. Finish with red espadrilles.
Evening Sparkle: Navy or white linen dress with red lipstick, metallic gold accents, and fun star inspired accessories.

IMG_2022-rr.jpg

IMG_2034-rr.jpg

IMG_2044-rr.jpg

IMG_2058-rr.jpg

IMG_2069-rr.jpg

Keeping the palette but skipping an actual flag or flag adjacent print feels intentional rather than overwhelming. Natural fabrics like linen, cotton, and seersucker keep it breathable for summer heat. Which one is your favorite patriotic look?

31 The "woman stranded in Home Depot" meme is spot on. I will say that when I drag Lindan to the pipe shop, I don;t spend very long there. I chat with teh owner for a couple of minutes, I look at the shelves of tobacco tins, I decide what I'm buying if anything, money changes hands, we're gone.

It seems like an eternity while I wait for her to look at every item on the clothes rack in the department store, or the thrift store. Once upon a time malls had other things one could do while a man's spouse shopped: check out the new paperbacks at the drugstore, browse through the bookstore, have some ice cream at a Farrell's. All gone.

61 By definition, the market is never wrong. Whatever people are paying for SPX on any given day? That's what it's worth.

It's not unusual for insiders to sell a portion of their shares, to avoid over-investment in a single equity. That said, generally speaking, insider sales are a red flag-- but insiders guess wrong too. Insiders usually divest a small portion of their total holdings.

People sell for all kinds of reasons--to pay for a daughter's destination wedding, to fund a divorce settlement. But they only buy for ONE reason.

I just read someone running some numbers in response to some lefty loon complaining about how Elon "took billions in tax dollars to become a trillionaire".

Elon has lowered the cost per lb of throwing something to LEO by about 95%. The cost for the Shuttle was about $30K/lb, with SLS pushing $40K. SpaceX charges around $1200 - $1400/lb or so depending. SpaceX's own cost per lb, using the fully reusable booster configurations is about $300/lb.

You then compare how much NASA (and military, for SpaceX launches of their hardware), all those "billions" in contracts to SpaceX have saved the US govt far more than they pay SpaceX in contracts.

76 23 If SpaceX is really worth what Wall Street is valuing it at right now, isn't Elon actually less wealthy today than he was on Thursday based on the fact he sold off so much of his ownership stake in the company at what turned out to be a discount price?

Posted by: tankdemon at June 14, 2026 10:14 PM
***
Short answer: The IPO only sold about 4.25% of the company. That means all owners got diluted by 4.25%. Pre-IPO, Elon owned something like 46%. After the IPO, he owns something like 42%.

The change in wealth comes from the valuation the market placed on the 4.25% in the IPO. That valuation was higher than SpaceX had previously valued itself. In other words, his ownership percentage might be lower post-IPO, but the market is valuing his shares higher. SpaceX IPO shares were not sold at a discount price relative to pre-IPO valuations.

Now, if I tag along with Thor to Lowe's or some such, I'll definitely go to the garden section while he's getting what he needs, but I cannot imagine trying to shop seriously for anything with him standing by offering his opinions on the price and/or my need for whatever it is I'm looking for. Nor would I expect him to stand around for however long it may take me to decide colors or style or whatever.

I read something similar. The person was saying thst the government made him a trillionaire because SpaceX got $38B in subsidies and contracts from the government.

I know this is a no-math zone, but $38B is less than 0.5% of $1T. And the government got satellites into orbit as a result of thos contracts.

There is an internet life coach type person called "The Crappy Childhood Fairy". She gives paid advice for people that think that they had a bad childhood.

California told her she isn't allowed to do it because she isn't licensed there and so they are fining her. The Pacific Legal Foundation is picked up her case for free

The argument that CA is making is that if you aren't a licensed therapist which costs $$$ and a degree you shouldn't be allowed to gave paid advice. This is in a federal court, and if she wins could really cause some problems for states that want to form cartels in industries...

202 149 Little known fact: Jefferson brough a few slaves with him to Paris, where slavery was not legal at the time. His slaves merely had to leave the embassy and walk away, and there would have been nothing he could do to make them return, yet they remained in his service the entire time and returned to Minticello with him. Obviously their reasons were more complex than rhat they just loved working for him and wanted to remain loyal, but they all knew that freedom lay hust outside a doorway but they never opened that door.

203 When Jefferson left the WH, he was deeply in debt to London bankers-- like many plantation* owners.

He tried to "farm his way out of debt." Tried to manufacture nails.

When he died, they had a lottery to raise money for his daughter.

Jefferson first came to public attention as the best lawyer in VA. He appointed many of the SCOTUS justices & other federal judges.

I've always been amazed that he didn't private law practice his way out of debt-- instead of trying to manufacture nails.

*Jefferson's "plantation" could more accurately be described as "3 non-contiguous farms," i.e., his 3 farms weren't one piece of land.

President Trump looks young on his 80th birthday. I like him better without his make up.

Piper: great fashion! With our first boy I wore maternity overalls. Who'd think over 40yrs later I was stylyin'? I found out decades later that my MIL hated them & I wish I had known so I could wear them all of the time. We were po' just out of college kids & I wore tees and sweaters under them from college.

I made sure when I had DIL's I was the opposite of her, as compliments to me were rare & her criticism often. I took it like a polite Southern girl. Raised right.

Our 2nd Lady is a very cute mommy. I was ok from behind, you'd never know, but from the side at the end people got out of my way. In labor the nurse looked at me and said, "Twins?" As she got 2 heartbeats. We looked at her in shock & I said, "We only have one crib!" She got her boss & my records, confirmed there was one big one. He weighed 10lbs.

That Lynyrd Skynyrd song is one of my husband's favorites, he loves the words.Gary Rossington wrote this about a scene that happened to Ronnie. I love them all!

I am highly skeptical.

Do they renounce fifty years of Death to the Little and Big Satan?

Iran has been a PITA for 50 years w/o nuclear weapons and them still not having does not change that.

They tried to make weapons in the past in secret and still have that knowledge base. The only reason they were attacked this time is because they said they had a dozen ready to assemble. They is nothing that can ever be done to prevent that in the future.

Lastly, Iran government of Mullah and IRGC has long ago earned having themselves liquidated. So, yes, I am injecting my own wishes into the whole Deal.

The ones with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce?

Those are great, although they suffer from the usual "Watson is a doofus" problem with screen versions of Holmes.

The "real" Watson in the books was an ex-army doctor. He meets Holmes when he's looking for a roommate to share expenses, because he's been kicked out of the service with a token pension after getting his ass shot off in Afghanistan.

Some things never change, do they?

Also, book Holmes was an expert martial artist, while Watson was the one who carried the gun.

I have never, once in my life, understood this. We cannot live in autarky. My coffee HAS to come from SOMEWHERE, and the TX Panhandle does not raise coffee.

Sure, there are businesses unique to various towns I go visit. (In San Marcos, TX, you will never find me in a Starbucks but you can definitely find me in a Mochas and Javas - shameless plug.) But I love all businesses, great and small. The evil Walmart nearest me does in fact employ lots of people who live close by. I have seen lots of good small businesses and lots of awful small businesses - just because you are a small, local business does not mean you are inherently morally superior. You compete with everyone else. And if I like your business I will spend money there. Just my 0.02.

323 The last time I wandered around a mall in Florida, it was raining and I had my gorgeous toddler boy in a stroller, waiting to pick up his 4yr old brother at preschool.

This boy had white blonde ringlets and big green eyes. Ladies would stop and tell him how pretty he was. By age two he learned to pat his hair and say,"Oh, thank you" to his fans, as he'd heard me say it so much. Ha! No, he's not ghey and now shaves his curls off and you'd never know it was curly. He did go through a blond afro stage in junior high that mortifies him now.

If I ever had to go to a mall it was for something specific vs wandering around looking at stuff. I may have done this wandering in HS but it was a dept store where I had my mother's credit card.
