8 It's pretty. Perhaps a little too close to the neighbors but there's lots of interior to get lost in, with stout brick to muffle the noises.

18 The Historic Building (De Waag / Oude Waag)The brand is named after (or evokes) De Waag (the Weigh House) on Nieuwmarkt square in Amsterdam — the oldest remaining non-religious building in the city (15th century).

Originally built as Sint Antoniespoort, a city gate (around 1488 or earlier).

Later converted into a public weigh house (1617) for goods.

Served various roles over centuries: guildhall (including surgeons' guild, where Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp was set), museum, fire station, etc.

Today it houses a restaurant/café ("In de Waag") and cultural/tech initiatives like Waag Society.

46 Wow!! Just wow!!

As the painting started to appear on the screen I thought it was a photograph. The exquisite level of detail and natural colors is astounding. Within that realism the artist manages to capture a feel for the work day activity in front of the city buildings. The people contribute a sense of movement even though dwarfed by the structures. This is a John Constable level of cityscapes instead of rural landscapes. I need to learn more about this artist.

When I was in the Netherlands eons ago, a tour guide told us that they were taxed by the width of the building on the street. So houses tended to be long, narrow, and vertical.

90 People will always figure out a way to get around taxes.

I recall that one area had a window tax, so... the houses had either no windows or one gigantic window.

Another taxed chimneys, so they'd go to great lengths to route all the fireplaces through a single chimney.

The advantage of both of these is that the tax dudes could assess the property from the street.

In a fawning promo for the Obamas, GMA asks Barack how he finds a balance of staying quiet or speaking out post-presidency.
He says his initial goal was to emulate George Washington:
"I've done my done my stint, and now I'm going back home."
“What I've tried to do is move from player to coach."
This schtick is really something.

124 The Oude Waag at the Westerkerk, 1864
Cornelis Springer

Lovely. Like a photograph. Would hang.

Springer was renowned for his meticulous architectural draftsmanship. The painting highlights the distinct Renaissance styling of the Westerkerk and the brick masonry of the Oude Waag.

Canal Life: The scene is brought to life with boats moored along the Keizersgracht, giving a lively snapshot of daily 19th-century Dutch maritime and urban life.

Atmospheric Light: Like many of his works, the 1864 painting utilizes dramatic, warm sunlight and deep shadows to create depth and a romanticized glow over the cityscape.
--
I'm not familiar with this artist. Found he is known for watercolors, etchings, and drawings, especially of city views and town scenes that he sketched while traveling around the country. He was awarded the Leopold order of Belgium in 1865, and in 1878 he was invited with Jozef Israëls to advise the Dutch Ministry of Public Affairs on the plans for the Rijksmuseum.

He has a large body of work, and I'd like to see more.
Thanks.

NPC flash updates are awesome. I thought it would get old, but it never does.

For me, it's consistent. During Fordow I said "I don't like direct involvement in Iran." I was disappointed but not surprised when we started the broader scale effort, but hoped for no invasion, in the knowledge that forgoing one would harm our credibility, but be for the best in the long run. That's more or less what's happening, so I'm fine with this outcome.

Could've been better. Could've been a shitload worse. Some of our servicemen died, but not a huge number. We've been embarrassed, but not humiliated. Iran has suffered terribly for their insolence. Between the two operations, Iran has been defanged for awhile, and China has been further chastised.

Some good, some bad. That's it.

For the NPCs, though... these drones have to whipsaw from "Trump's illegal and unjust war of Jew aggression against brown white people" to "Trump's spineless surrender to America's implacable Persian foe" in one day.

I was disappointed but not surprised when we started the broader scale effort, but hoped for no invasion, in the knowledge that forgoing one would harm our credibility, but be for the best in the long run. That's more or less what's happening, so I'm fine with this outcome.

Same. It's not everything I dreamed of, but everything I dreamed of would've involved an actual boots-on-the-ground invasion at a large scale, and we're all familiar with how many ways that can go wrong.

There are "camelback" houses like that in Da Swamp.
If a house was two-story on the street, taxes were higher. So they would build one story on the street, and the house would rise to a second story farther back.

I recall a few people in his class were asked that, and they said ‘who?’ They didn’t remember him at all, despite all the later myth-making about how he was some big man on campus. I’m certain he was barely there at all. Never went to class. Just spent all his days getting high and fagging around.

I also recall they asked the same thing about Big Mike’s college mates, and a few were like ‘she was a miserable fucking bitch.’ Sounds right to me.

I've come to realize two important things about it:
1) yes, in the end we gave Iran everything they asked for and bugged out, about like the US did in Vietnam in '73 - '74.

2) Trump had no choice, because most of the world (including the US) was within 30 days of a very severe recession setting in as oil storage levels around the world went to zero. That would have wrecked the midterms and likely have put the left into power.

Not many noticed but the chairman of Exxon called this about 3 weeks ago. A lot of people ridiculed him for saying that, but clearly Trump believed him. Now oil prices will drop and the midterms will be saved, and most Americans don't care much about foreign affairs anyways.
