Mornin' Pixy, fellow Hordians.
I actually got enough sleep last night, mostly because I crashed very early due to exhaustion, but hey, I'll take it. I'd been fighting a low-grade headache all day yesterday, couldn't figure out why. Got home after work, saw my coffee mug sitting on my desk, full. So I didn't actually get the time to have my morning mug of coffee, and tried to tackle a monday without it. https://youtu.be/dRi_OPgICCA Don't do Mondays without coffee, kids. If anyone remembers my Garmin problem, in short
The old one had Fastest and Shortest solutions to travel, the new has Fastest and a impossible Straight Line, no road goes straight to where you want. Well sent a nice email and got one back. In staes it doesn't think its possible to have me go 31 miles for a 16 mile shortest route. Well will document it if it happens somehow. Going to city, probably all week. Louis Rossman is suing Samsung over a 990 EVO Pro failure that is under warranty, started performing so poorly after 18 months that it dropped out of his raid array.
He sends it back. They "test" it, say it's fine and ship it back. Louis tests it. It's not fine. Louis' profession is ... data recovery. He knows exactly how and when drives can fail and in what state. So yeah, he's kicked this back to them with notice that he's going to sue them in 60 days under Texas laws covering fitness of product for merchantability if they don't send him a new one. @8/Skip: The Garmin Problem: I've been fighting this for ~ two years with my Garmin DezlCam OTR725 (a fairly "new" Garmin device.)
Under Settings, Navigation, Calculation Mode, I have two options: "Faster Time" and "Straight Line". I drive school bus. I must run a school route in a specific order of stops. It doesn't matter how I get between each stop, but I must run the stops in the order specified (rule from our school board.) What I really need is a navigation optimization mode that: Follows stops (and any waypoints between) in the route in that EXACT order. Just do as I say, and let me be in control for a while, would you? I can switch the current mess to "Straight Line" and my route works more or less okay, but then later (without using a route) if I try to specify a single destination, it just draws a straight line between me and the destination. THAT'S NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. Garmin really needs to get out in the field with their product with drivers in different scenarios, because this is nonsense. Or... as Pixy says: "Well that's dumb." So yeah, I feel your pain. Garmin has been pissing me off. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 09, 2026 05:05 AM (O7YUW) 24

Further to the Garmin Problem: If I select "Faster Time", then for any pre-programmed route, Garmin tries to optimize the route according to how I could run it the fastest, which means it can put the stops out of order, and that's verbotten per board policy/rules.

It was not a pleasant experience. After several phone calls trying to return it for repair (one rep even hung up on me) I finally got the RMA to send it, paying UPS to box it up. Long story short, they hadn't fixed the problem when it was sent back and I had to send it again, whereby they finally repaired it after going through the entire process again. I've still got that TV in the attic but it was a piece of crap that has had numerous problems even after it was repaired twice. Evening and morning, fellow satellites and satraps of the vast AoSHQ Empire! 'Tis Tiu's Day.
G & R: I had that caffeine withdrawal headache happen to me on several successive Mondays back in the late '80s. I was not as regular a drinker of the black juice then, and for some reason I did not have any coffee on Sunday. On Monday, I dragged through the work day feeling as though I had a small screwdriver in my head. Tuesday I was fine. Took my slow, childlike mind several weeks to realize it was lack of coffee on Sunday. Now, when a hurricane is coming, I make sure to brew up a pot and keep it in the refrigerator; in case the power goes out, I can always have a few swallows. As far as the house hunt goes: My realtor and I sent a request document to the sellers yesterday, asking that they repair all the major issues with the house I'm interested in. Including the replacement of the A/C unit -- so the sellers are almost certainly going to say, "No way, sir."

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere When my wife and I bought the house we have, the seller had to do about 10K worth of work including well repair. @Wolfus (#38/#40):
Yeah, recognizing a caffeine withdrawal moment is sometimes difficult because we have too much blood in our caffeine stream. As to the realtor proposal to the seller: Be ready to counter with an offer for your previous offer price minus the estimated repair costs when the seller says "No thank you" to your offer that includes a "Get all the repairs done, first" clause. This is a better option anyway, as the seller might try to get a thin veneer of work done so it looks good but will crap out on you six months after purchase. Good luck suing over that too, you'll pay more in lawyer costs than you'll get in damages. Better to just contract the repairs and keep a weather eye on the jobs and workmanship. Then you'll know. Or, y'know, wait until a better listing appears. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at June 09, 2026 06:18 AM (O7YUW) 48
Speaking of customer service, I am still waiting for the correct processing of that old pension payout from my job of 1978-87. I need to call again this week and nag them about getting it done. Last week I mailed a politely outraged letter to the CEO of Fidelity, detailing her employees' lack of competence over the last six months. The odds are low that something will ever happen . . . but they would be zero if I did *not* write.

@36/SpeakingOf: "Samsung is not well known for their top-notch after-sale customer service."
Yeah, I was already at the "Don't buy ANYTHING from Samsung except maybe their ssds, or nvme drives". Had two Samsung computer monitors that both crapped out the same way: Longer and longer to turn on and hold with a proper image, with flickering on/off as it tried to get to that point, and finally they just wouldn't turn on. Then I read about their exploding washing machines and dryers... Definitely not buying their appliances after those horror stories (included people getting seriously injured.) Samsung's one of the two chaebols (Korean family cartels) that are part of the "big three" screwing everyone over on memory prices. (The other Chaebol is Hynix, the last company is Micron in the USA.) I'm left with pretty much zero desire to buy anything from Samsung ever again. ZERO. G & R, yes, I think I'm going to have to wait for something better. The porch or rear patio, garage, laminate or hardwood floors in at least the living and dining areas, a solid working roof, A/C and heat, and fairly modern electricity are my requirements. And houses with them all are available in my price range.
It's a shame, as this one was just right for me and, I thought, would have needed only some floor work (taking up the carpet in two rooms and refinishing the hardwood) to make it perfect. Which would not have been cheap or fast -- but it at least seemed like a small step to get me into my own home. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 09, 2026 06:24 AM (wzUl9) 54
@49/Don Black: "Hey do thumb drives go bad?
I have a thumb drive that recently decided it was read only." Yep, they do. You're lucky you can still read yours. Get the data off of it onto your hard drive, then smash it with a hammer (or return it for warranty if you can, depending on how sensitive the data is on it, if it's personal/secure, destroy the device and eat the loss.) Buying replacement thumb drives, nvme drives, ssd's, or memory right now: UGH. This AI bubble nonsense can't pop soon enough. May it crash and burn in a spectacular fire. I really do believe that Microsoft engineers their operating systems to go bad after a few years, to force you to upgrade
Posted by: Don Black at June 09, 2026 06:47 AM (ZxPkt) I believe it is more of an issue of a lack of any financial incentive to backport any new additions to older versions of the OS. In some cases, those decisions may be technical, and in many instances, improvements in the later versions are mostly fluff and eye candy, with very little end user perceived benefit, while forcing the upgrade cycle on users and putting onto users decisions they don't want (like AI slop and spyware, er, telemetry). That's where Linux shines, because it is less bloated which can breathe new life into older hardware, and more user focused (by virtue of user choice). I have 15-18 year old laptops and PCs running Linux for kids use, a soon to be media PC, backup NAS, etc. Those are all long out of the Windows HW/SW lifecycle. Wolfus, hubby and I have bought and sold several homes and built the one we’re in. I also was a realtor for a few years. Advice based on experience here. Move on. Do not have sellers repair or replace. You will become a financial and physical slave to this place.Rehabbing homes is for experienced individuals with deep pockets and nothing else to do.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 09, 2026 07:09 AM (wzUl9) Yeah, I'd be looking for an even deeper discount than I suggested the other day (based on the wiring reflections, which can mean new wallboard or wall work if lath and plaster (most likely), and I could do the work or be a general for such a project. 90. Virtually all estate sales are “as is”. My concern is they will just lower the price significantly and you will be tempted to say yes. Resist!!! You’ll find another one without all the problems.

We were better off when these creatures were in the closet. What gets me the most is that history has shown that when a company ignores the rainbow bullies and just goes on with life, people give them money. Posted by: NR Pax at June 09, 2026 07:18 AM (jjoN6) 97
One of my older brothers made a fortune buying houses and fixing them up. He was an "engineer" in the fabrication of silicon chips. He made far more money in real estate.

Here’s the kicker, there’s apparently over 2m votes left to count in the LA Mayor race and as soon as Raman overtook Pratt, they called it and are pushing to have Pratt concede.
He’s obviously going to be shut out, but what happened to count every vote. Posted by: Thomas Bender at June 09, 2026 07:23 AM (XV/Pl) 101

Wolfus. If you buy a Fixer-Upper you have to keep in mind that that all those upgrade expenses are in cash. To me, it seems the more prudent decision, is to spend more on a house that's in good shape from day one. The additional expense of a higher priced home is amortized over the length of the mortgage, which likely is cheaper than paying lump sum cash payments to fix up a deficient house. Bottom fishing for houses is often one of the most expensive decisions you can make.

Also: the remaining votes aren't enough to change the outcome. It is statistically impossible for Pratt to overcome the margin against him. This is Science. Why do you hate Science? Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 09, 2026 07:29 AM (O0L8i) 106

Additionally, Wolfus, You are living on a fixed income these days, stability and predictability are highly valued attributes Even if the initial house payment is somewhat more than you have decided you're willing pay. Reality bites sometimes but it is what it is. Optimizing for predictable long-term cash flow allows you to compensate for inflation somewhat, meet monthly expenses, and even have some left over to go buy that fancy new couch you've been thinking about. Fussing over a house that's a money pit is wasting time it seems. There's plenty of other houses to go look at and consider. It's been my experience. If you're having this much trouble deciding if this house is the one it is most certainly not the one. Finding the right house is one of the easiest purchases you can ever make, This one fails that test it seems.

**** He should insist that the rest of the votes be counted. That would show how much corruption there is in the system and make a better case for a federal inspection. Also, he could use for a recount based on the absurd vote dumps. Then, again, Commiefornia. Posted by: clarence at June 09, 2026 07:35 AM (FLIKO) 112
