The other ONT hosts noticed something in the seldom-monitored suggestion box. No idea how long it had been in there. Regular commenter "Hour of the Wolf" is responsible for tonight's content. Treat him as you see fit! My first meeting with Robert the Cat (TM) ![]() image from scientificamerican.com No human endeavor has been more associated with mystery than the huge, ancient lion that has a human head and is seemingly resting on the rocky plateau a stroll from the great pyramids. Fortunately for Lehner, it wasn’t just a metaphor that the Sphinx is a riddle. Little was known for certain about who erected it or when, what it represented and precisely how it related to the pharaonic monuments nearby. So Lehner settled in, working for five years out of a makeshift office between the Sphinx’s colossal paws, subsisting on Nescafé and cheese sandwiches while he examined every square inch of the structure. He remembers “climbing all over the Sphinx like the Lilliputians on Gulliver, and mapping it stone by stone.” The result was a uniquely detailed picture of the statue’s worn, patched surface, which had been subjected to at least five major restoration efforts since 1,400 B.C. The research earned him a doctorate in Egyptology at Yale. Recognized today as one of the world’s leading Egyptologists and Sphinx authorities, Lehner has conducted field research at Giza during most of the 37 years since his first visit. (Hawass, his friend and frequent collaborator, is the secretary general of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities and controls access to the Sphinx, the pyramids and other government-owned sites and artifacts.) Applying his archaeological sleuthing to the surrounding two-square-mile Giza plateau with its pyramids, temples, quarries and thousands of tombs, Lehner helped confirm what others had speculated—that some parts of the Giza complex, the Sphinx included, make up a vast sacred machine designed to harness the power of the sun to sustain the earthly and divine order. And while he long ago gave up on the fabled library of Atlantis, it’s curious, in light of his early wanderings, that he finally did discover a Lost City. The Sphinx was not assembled piece by piece but was carved from a single mass of limestone exposed when workers dug a horseshoe-shaped quarry in the Giza plateau. Approximately 66 feet tall and 240 feet long, it is one of the largest and oldest monolithic statues in the world. None of the photos or sketches I’d seen prepared me for the scale. It was a humbling sensation to stand between the creature’s paws, each twice my height and longer than a city bus. I gained sudden empathy for what a mouse must feel like when cornered by a cat. The real reason the Sphinx is next to the pyramids? The Sphinx needs a scratching post. That's why the cover stones are missing. "Who in here was giving birth at 6 PM?" I was the only one. So, I'm like "That was me, doctor. Is everything Okay?" He replies "I'm not a doctor. I'm a WELDING ENGINEER. I came here specifically to meet the woman who RIPPED THE DAMN IRON HANDLE off the delivery chair during her contractions!" Set 2 Set 3 Set 4 ![]() I don't care how old I get. If I'm in a store and see a toy with "Try Me" on it, I'm pushing those buttons. Remember, nobody owes you a damn thing... so stop your cry-baby whining and get over it! Clipped:
--- During the 1984 Democratic primary, Senator Gary Hart ran a campaign heavily centered on the slogan of "new ideas". Mondale, the former Vice President, used the phrase—which was borrowed from a famous Wendy's fast-food commercial playing at the time—to mock Hart's proposals. Mondale argued that Hart’s broad, sweeping policy ideas were like a beefless hamburger: catchy to hear, but ultimately empty and lacking in substance. --- Posted by: Axeman at June 08, 2026 10:30 PM (Fi81e) 118

AOP, you'll get all this.
Getting my rod back together after the paint job. Just tedious work. Then I discovered a brake fluid leak from (apparently) the area in front of the master cylinder. Lots of tightening of fittings and thinking. Discovered it was the fitting on the tee splitting the rear brake lines, fluid running down the body, fooling me. Unhappy, but got it fixed. Then found a fuel leak from around the level sensor, which I am currently ignoring by lowering the fuel level (for now). Time for a test run! Backed out of the garage and saw a trail of some fluid very near the master cylinder alignment. Nope. Somehow, somehow, I must have nicked the plastic oil pressure line and IT is leaking. I suppose that soon I'll wind up with a water leak. Posted by: LRob in OK at June 08, 2026 10:32 PM (Jr+re) 130

Urban legend, promulgated by intellectuals such as Al Sharpton, i.e., "They shot the nose off because Napoleon couldn't stand seeing a statue of a black person!" Nappy did steal a lot of Egyptian cultural treasures, though. These liberated items still form the core of the Louvre's Egyptian collection. Egypt has so much pharaonic art that they haven't bitched much about their losses, unlike Greece & its missing stuff, i.e., the Elgin Marbles parthenon frieze. Greece still wants that back, and it will likely succeed some day. Posted by: mnw at June 08, 2026 10:32 PM (RCjYY) 131

Posted by: scampydog I pulled a tee shot then pushed a follow up on one hole, promptly losing both golf balls. Made up for by finding about 7 other golf balls because nobody out on the course is any good either. I did hit two spectacular shots on 17 and 18 but made up for it by 3 putting. Yay! Shot a 96. Posted by: Puddleglum, Greetings from Amish Country at June 08, 2026 10:41 PM (bfy6w) **** 3 putts suck, and not in a good way. The course where the Geezer Golfers play is a beautiful but narrow with water everywhere and a lot of houses. I give up 4-8 strokes every round due to OB penalties. Of course this is built in sand bagging for when I go play a regular course. Then I usually win. Posted by: Diogenes at June 08, 2026 10:45 PM (2WIwB) 174

You can put me in the lunatic woo-woo crowd that thinks the Sphinx (and maybe the Pyramids themselves) are far older than traditionally dated. The water erosion on the Sphinx is the main thing. And then there's the Younger Dryas and the astronomical alignments. Around 12,000 years ago, when the last ice age ended and the Holocene began. Go back to the magic date of about 10,500 BC, give or take. Due to precession of the equinoxes, the equinox was in Leo. The Sphinx would've facing it's celestial counterpart at sunrise on the equinox (or any time when the equinox point was rising). And due to procession, the constellation were quite shifted relative the pole and equator. At Giza, the bottom of Orion (Rigel and Saiph). At the moment of equinox rising, Orion was just transiting, with his feet right on the horizon. Stellarium (and others), loaded with JPL's DE440/441 high precision ephemerides, will easily show that spectacular alignment. Stellarium's default precession model is pretty good, but the default ephemeris (VSOP87) won't be so hot about the planets and the ecliptic of date that far back. It won't be too bad, but you need DE441 to get it right. Back then, when Leo rose, it was sitting nearly horizontal to the horizon. The crouching Sphinx staring right at a crouching lion rising on the eastern horizon. There is a theory that the slight off linear alignment of the three pyramids corresponds to Orion's belt stars (Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka). So, from a vantage point to the north of the complex, looking due south, at equinox rising, you'd see the pyramids right under Orion due South, with the feet walking on the horizon with the three pyramids right underneath, with Leo due east with the Sphinx staring right at it. Wasn't it buried for a couple thousand years? Could that have had an effect on the weathering?
Posted by: OrangeEnt at June 08, 2026 11:08 PM (1Ff7Z) Yes, it should have slowed any weathering, if not stopped it completely while it was buried for around 5K years, off and on. There was a period when the Sahel and Egypt got far more rain than it does now, a period called the African Humid period. Weathering and water erosion like seen at the Sphinx would have been faster then. Posted by: Kindltot at June 08, 2026 11:41 PM (rbvCR) 259

RE: Elgin Marbles and air pollution: Puts me in mind of a true (for once) story about Somerset Maugham: He bought a Gauguin on glass in Tahiti for about $1.35. He was accused of exploiting the natives. Maugham won that argument (in my view) by explaining, "It was originally one-third of a 3-part panel. Loved the welder. I sadly never got past 8cm with our first 10# lad. I was really hoping to say lots of stuff I normally would not to my husband. Baby was not coming out the normal way as his head never engaged, so we are alive today thanks to c-sections. I would not have made a pioneer woman due to this and not surviving without AC. I have a high pain tolerance so all I could manage was a moan now and then. I sent my dude to the waiting room to inform my mother that it was not me screaming back there. Britain had noticed that for the first time since they’ve built them, there’s not a single British submarine at sea. And the reason is because every single one is broken down, waiting on parts. (Several of them for years)

The African humid period or Green Sahara is interesting. It correlates with the Milankovitch cycles of perihelion precessing about the seasons. When perihelion occurs in Northern summer, rather than winter as it does now, through some not-completely-understood mechanism, it throws the Sahara into a nice wet, green climate. Ice Ages can prevent that from turning back on. This cycle is about 19 - 23K years (it's shorter than the pole precession because of apsidal precession) The last one started near the end of the Pleistocene, and turned off maybe 6000 years ago. Before that, however, I think it missed two green cycles, and the last one before last was somewhere around 70K years ago. The Green Sahara thing is driven by changes in the North African Monsoon, I was just reading. I remembered something about that. When perihelion occurs in north summer, that monsoon gets strengthened, and allows rainfall to penetrate. The obliquity and eccentricity cycles modulate that as well. Higher tilt, and closer perihelion make it even stronger. Our little human cycles are nothing compared to these grand astronomical cycles that drive everything long term. In latest vote drop, Nithya Raman explodes to a roughly 22,000 vote lead over Spencer Pratt.
They were only about 3,000 apart after yesterday’s drop. -- ROLOL Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at June 09, 2026 01:21 AM (9EFgU) 418

Has anyone read about Nithya?
She's a Democratic Socialist, and she bought the WHOLE package of commie bullzh*t. Probably the only candidate who makes Bass look good by comparison. I assume the Pratt voters will either stay home or vote for Bass. ABN: Anybody but Nithya. Posted by: mnw at June 09, 2026 01:26 AM (RCjYY) 420
You can see the Moon during the day anytime it’s up and clouds aren’t in the way. I’ve seen it in daylight more times than I can count. You just need to know where to look. It’s not very bright compared to the Sun, but It’s there, if you look for it.

The clock tower in the top pic: is that for real or computer generated? Who makes octagonal clock faces with no numbers?

I doubt the moon is quite as visible as it was in the Middle Ages. A bit brighter back then.

The best times to see the Moon in daylight is generally around the 1st and 3rd quarters. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 09, 2026 01:31 AM (w6EFb) 425

mnw - on what are you basing the brightness of the Moon in the Middle Ages versus today? Do you have reports of comparisons of the Moon’s brightness versus various stars or the like? Seriously curious.
Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at June 09, 2026 01:37 AM (ZVgZ4) 431
I'm basing it on the reading I've done about the Middle Ages. It's referenced in quite a few places, see, eg. "A great and Glorious Adventure," about The Hundred Years War.
And the clock tower in Milwaukee isn't computer generated. Posted by: mnw at June 09, 2026 01:41 AM (RCjYY) 432
I doubt the Moon was any brighter in the past than today. The Sun is equally bright today as in the Middle Ages, and the Moon’s albedo will not have changed since then by any appreciable amount. Are you talking about light pollution obscuring its brightness? That wouldn’t work during the day. Or is the atmosphere blocking some of the light due to pollution? If so, I expect an era where everyone used smoky fire to keep warm, for example, the Middle Ages, would do more to block the Moon’s brightness.

If you mean how bright the Moon is at night, it was undoubtedly apparently brighter in the Middle Ages than today because of light pollution from all the electric lights. I never knew how many stars there were until I went camping in a state park in Texas, far from any city lights. I got up in the middle of night to find the latrine and was amazed to see the Milky Way in all its glory!

WHY do you think they put telescopes at places such as Mt. Palomar? Because there is almost no urban air pollution there. You can see celestial objects better when there's no air pollution, right? In the Middle Ages there was no air pollution anywhere. So the moon appeared brighter. Posted by: mnw at June 09, 2026 01:54 AM (RCjYY) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0612 seconds. |
