Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday night ONT. First one of June 2026. Open thread, as always. Fashion and music, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

Shorts Season, Served with Sass: How to Make Them Look Expensively Polished in 2026
I’m not a shorts girl. I own exactly two pairs: my beloved cut-off Levi’s 501s (great for beach days, questionable everywhere else) and one tailored olive green pair that occasionally sees daylight. I gravitate to skirts and dresses, but sometimes you just need something that doesn’t involve wrestling with wind.
These are the exact looks I would put together for myself. Elevated, flattering, and full of personality so I actually feel excited to wear shorts instead of defaulting to a dress.
The good news? Shorts can look polished, and even a little sexy, when styled right. Let’s prove it with three looks that lean into the best of Ralph Lauren, Ted Baker, and Dolce & Gabbana drama.

Look 1: Ralph Lauren Chic (The “Luxury on Vacation” Vibe)

IMG_1925-rr.jpg

This look is pure effortless elegance. Think Piper in the Italian countryside. Monochromatic linen blends, clean lines, and the most forgiving pleats you’ll ever meet. These shorts are strategically designed so the pleats sit in all the right places instead of creating new ones. 😉
• Pleated Linen Blend Twill Shorts by Lauren Ralph Lauren in Light Agave Green
• Twist Front Sleeveless Top by Lauren Ralph Lauren in Light Agave Green
• Lina Wedge Sandal by Reformation in Rum Leather
• Romy Straw Bucket Bag by Tory Burch (large)
• The Vivienne 59mm Gradient Round Sunglasses by Ralph Lauren
Slip this on and suddenly you’re the woman who “just threw this together” while secretly looking like you have a summer house in Tuscany.

Look 2: Ted Baker Preppy (Brunch-to-Errands Queen Energy)

IMG_1926-rr.jpg

Sunshine in clothing form. This combo brings playful British preppy meets summer ease. The perfect mix of textures feels rich without trying too hard. Cotton-blend shorts keep things crisp, the ruffle-trim knit adds softness, and those sky-blue patent slides? Chef’s kiss. Retro sunnies seal the polished-but-fun deal.
• Hana Plaid Cotton Blend Shorts by Ted Baker in Camellia Rose
• Elisa Rib Ruffle Trim Sweater by Ted Baker in Vanilla Ice
• Fina Slide Sandal by Bruno Magli in Sky Blue Patent
• 50mm Oval Sunglasses by Mia Mia
• Paddington Leather Shoulder Bag by Chloé in Cloudy Cream (small)
Wear this and you’ll feel like the main character running around town looking annoyingly cute.

Look 3: Dolce & Gabbana Luxe (Main Character Energy, Activated)

IMG_1928-rr.jpg

When you want shorts to scream “I’m expensive and I know it.” Matching Majolica prints, a flirty bustier, and embroidered mules make every step feel like a runway moment. Heels + shorts = instant leg-lengthening sorcery.
• Majolica Print Mat Bermuda Shorts by Dolce & Gabbana
• Majolica Print Charmeuse Bustier Top by Dolce & Gabbana
• Majolica Print brocade mules with embroidery by Dolce & Gabbana
• DG Sunglasses
This look is confident, feminine, and just the right amount of extra.
Shorts don’t have to feel like giving up on style, they can be your secret weapon for warm-weather polish. Whether you’re channeling Ralph Lauren ease, Ted Baker charm, or D&G drama, the key is tailoring, texture play, and confidence.
Which of these three looks is making you want to give shorts another chance? ☀️

Thanks, Piper!

13 First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.

Chip Monck was the guy making announcements from the stage during Woodstock 1969. For a year after the concert, he was repeatedly receiving death threats. The cops eventually tracked down the fellow doing it. Turns out it was the guy who had been trying to sell the brown acid.

56 Well, I took a Sunday afternoon nap and missed the Gun Thread. I wanted to share that I did some cursory research on chamberings favored in the grim lands of our conquered forebears, and while English cops don't normally carry, what guns they have in their HQ are all the familiar NATO ones: 9mm handguns, 5.56mm carbines, 7.62mm sniper rifles (really?), and 12-gauge shotguns (nice Imperial there).

The point of this exercise was to find out what kind of ammo might be readily available at gunpoint, if we were to airdrop crates of Liberty Starter Kits with just a single case of Freedom Seeds per Pew Pew. AI refused, unsurprisingly, to tell me what kind of guns were in mosque armories; the closest I could get was that the firearms most commonly captured being smuggled were AK-47s, and the ones most commonly confiscated off being carried by criminals were 9mm pistols.

Other commenters have pointed out that our kin across the pond don't have any practice or experience with guns. So, with cops and criminals alike settling on 9mm, and with discomfort and unfamiliarity being an issue, I think Pistol-Caliber Carbines are the way to go. And several companies make them for Glock magazines.

62 I was just looking at the latest IERS data for the earth's rotation. I got fascinated by a little unexpected speed-up starting around 2020.

That appears to have settled down, and we're back to normal (mean solar day yearly average back to a smidge over 24 hours, rather a smidge less). If that little speed-up had kept up, we'd have needed a negative leap second by around 2029 - 2030.

No need to worry about that for now, although it will be a while before a normal positive leap second is needed again.

71 The reason why 7.62x51mm sniper rifles are a (really?) is because that's a relatively light cartridge suitable for battle rifles. Indeed, the .30-06 Springfield (or 7.62x63mm), "the cartridge that won two World Wars," was a battle rifle chambering in its day, with even water-cooled BARs. So if you're going to make a 30-caliber sniper rifle, at least go x63mm for goodness' sake.

And 12-gauge is an Imperial because of math. Gauge is inverse pounder. If a cannon has a bore where a lead sphere of that diameter would weigh 12 pounds, then it's a 12-pounder. Gauge is the inverse, for how many spheres of that diameter it would take to make 1 pound, which is why a 10-gauge is bigger than a 12-gauge is bigger than a 20-gauge. A 12-gauge shotgun is a 1/12th pounder cannon.

72 I know that place in the top photo. It's a creepy little island called "Sepia". Time moves differently there as most of the men still wear hats, and the women never wear skirts above the knee. Everyone still smokes, doctors make housecalls, and there's this guy wearing a brimmed cap that delivers glass bottles of milk.

I was there for a week's vacation, and for some reason I had the urge to grow a pencil think moustache. This one guy kept calling me a "Dick". Turns out he thought I was a detective. And, there was a rather embarrassing occurrence when I mixed up the word "mug" in ordering a beer, and the bartended punched some poor guy in the face.

122 22 Spencer Pratt (R) has dropped to 3rd place in the L.A. mayor's race tonight, due to another mail-in ballot drop."

I'll repeat something I wrote this morning - I think it's better for us in the long run that it happen this way. First, you know that they were going to steal it from him in November; no realistic person can have any doubt about that. But they would have had time to prepare, and that would have been semi-plausible 51-49 Bass win and nobody would have known for sure how much cheating this was.

But this way, they are so bold as to steal blatantly, right out in the open, in about the most ridiculous way possible. Why? Because they can - but also everyone in the country can see it out in the open, and there is no doubt that California elections are absolutely corrupt, and will remain corrupt until some outside force steps in to clean them up. Now what shape that cleanup will take is up for debate - I have some ideas, as do you - but there can no longer be any doubt at all that it is absolutely necessary, and that the constitutional rights of all Californians are being infringed until that happens.

Gorgeous photo on top! Wonder if the photographer used a lens. I have a former nursing school friend who is also a professional landscape photographer. I have several of her prints and one is of aspen at first snowfall. The aspen are pink vs yellow and she used an infrared lens (I think).

Home By the Sea by Genesis brings back good memories from 40yrs ago. Moving from the Intermountain West to the Atlantic coast of FL. Eldest son at 2.5yrs knew the words to this song. Raised our boys on rock and roll. He's the professional musician (now engineer to make a living). Now back where we belong in West.

Wonderful time and fairly good trip driving 8hrs/day til MS, where we spent 3 wks. Then another 2 day drive to the coast. We also had an 8wk old boy, which made for excitement in my "milking stall" of the Datsun, as my brother called it when I staggered out. Baby had a growth spurt on the trip and gained about 2#.

I am in a better mood tonight & not wanting to kill anyone (yet). Baby girl doing well from her delayed antibiotic. I just pray she stays healthy & her kidneys will be fine for the routine ultrasound next month.

Have a wonderful evening.

Only indirectly. Piper's Fashion segment contained the word "bustier."

159 there is no doubt that California elections are absolutely corrupt, and will remain corrupt until some outside force steps in to clean them up. Now what shape that cleanup will take is up for debate

Perhaps we could try a blockade, since that's all the rage these days.

161 Spencer Pratt (R) has dropped to 3rd place in the L.A. mayor's race tonight, due to another mail-in ballot drop.

So, the "general election" will almost certainly be incumbent mayor Karen (Light My Fire) Bass vs. a middle eastern woman who criticizes Bass for being too conservative.

Sorry to be the bearer of unwelcome tidings.

Unwelcome, but scarcely unexpected, given the blatant corruption in Kalifuckya.

I would comment to try to do better, but that would add to the comment count.

165 Sometimes I think the best way to deal with the LA metro area would be to wall it off and declare it as a mental institution. This would, of course, include Hollywood and Malibu.

Everyone who gets out of criminal prosecution for insanity spends 20-100 years there.

Since they're all nuts, they don't get to vote.

Greetings Horde

Thank you Doof for excellent content.

L. A. Consists of some 80 suburbs in search of a city some wit observed decades ago. To remove oneself from the City of L. A. to a usually much more saner city government In most cases is a move of but a few miles.

Removing oneself from California is a 'oss of a different color it is....(sorry - I've been watching a lot of old Sherlock Holmes movies lately)

176 So, surprise, the other commie in the mayoral race has gotten nearly all the mail ins. So Pratt is out and the two commies with runoff.

And does Seattle qualify for that designation as well? Because I’ll challenge you on that one.
