What - you thought there wasn't going to be a NoVaMoMe in 2026?

Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to attend the event. Are you attending? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of attending?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated details of the 2026 NoVAMoMe are here! That's right, I finally got my act together and updated the information page for 2026, and need to go over a few details. First, the date is June 20th, 2026 from 11am to 3pm. Nextly, my bestest blog buddy bluebell and I have decided 2026 will continue the longstanding tradition of NoVAMoMe simplification, and want to pass along the changes from prior years.

First, no registration and no advance charge for food. If you would like to attend, send an email to WeaselBell Productions, and let us know. You will be directed to a sekrit webpage with all of the details. We do ask once you have decided to attend to let us know so we can coordinate an expected count with venue management. Once there if you are hungry or thirsty simply order from the onsite menu and pay separately. Cash and credit cards accepted. Next, although fun, we have decided to again take a break from the raffles and mug sales this year. Depending on how it goes, that may be something we bring back in future years. While your generosity is always appreciated, with no prize table, please leave donations and contributions at home, but bring your appetite for a great afternoon spent with your imaginary online friends.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

14 Well, had an outstanding time at the NHMiniMoMe. Did not have luck with the 1,000 yard target, but I did hit at 866. :-)

It was also nice to have The Grateful and T-Rex join us on this foray.

I think the others that attended can put into words much better than I on how much fun we had.

I would especially like to thank our host RI Red. Did a damn fine job getting this together and be the main spotter on the Friday session ( I was not there Thursday)
Thank you Red, cannot wait to get up there again.

The liars who are compulsive i have seen almost always trip themselves up because it becomes impossible to keep their shit straight they contradict so many times they lose track of where they are at. They could save so much effort and trouble just by not lying. But it like... psychological armor (the lies.)

Well, that's where the Cluster B concept comes into play, because it's neither easy nor relevant for us to distinguish between all the different personality disorders that involve reality distortion, including also histrionic, borderline, and antisocial. We just need to develop defense mechanisms against all of them.

29 The 4.7mm ammo of the G11 was meant to save weight compared to conventional brass cased ammo and the magazines required to hold it. Testing revealed that prolonged firing (burst fire was at about 2,200 RPM) made it easier to cook off the ammo. The brass case provided a heat sink that allowed for greater safety when firing high round counts on automatic fire from a rifle. The G11 took that away. As far as I know, no one else has made any attempt to go with caseless ammo since the end of the G11 program.

Finally home after two weeks of travel which included the famous NH MicroMini MoMe! Fantastic weather, fabulous teachers, and great conversations, not to mention the best host with a great local range. Lord Red outdid himself. Day 1 morning was an involved tutorial of AR type gubs, including take down, cleaning and reassemble. Tons of information. That afternoon, after lunch at the best little diner, we hit the range shooting at 25, 100 and 300. The next day was the long distance range, which for me was a different set of skills. But I was able to hit at 500 and 860.
Sincere thanks to Lord Red, and RMBS, CBD and Scube for their patience, knowledge, and for genuinely trying to help us be successful. I feel very blessed.
And yes, I now have long distance precision shooting in my blood - I think that should go into Lord Red's permanent record!

I suggest reading "Taking Back The Infantry Half-Kilometer," a 2009 paper written by Major Thomas Erhart for his School for Advanced Military Studies course. He discusses exactly the concepts the new SOCOM rifle executes. The big news is that the Army is putting the concepts discussed by Major Erhart into action.

I remember when I watched that video, I loved the bit about the fact (as you said) that you were not just ejecting the brass, but also a lot of heat with the brass. That is .... I am not sure of the right word. Like a beneficial unforseen incentive. Its brilliant (even though they did not realize it when they designed the thing.)

So the gun can be seen as eating cans of food in a car. Eat the goodies (lead and copper) then fills the cans with poop (heat) and throws the cans out the car window.

Now that we have that out of the way!

We did it a little differently this year and added a new first day of AR 15 and AR pattern rifle orientation. Grateful and TRex were great guinea pigs to see how it went. Future students have big shoes to fill.

Bore sighting got on paper at 100, then able to work on some pretty decent shots. I'd like to try to work up to the 1K mark, but that will take time.
Oh, it's a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa 1500 Short Action) in 6.5 C with a Vortex Viper 6.5 - 20 x 50, using Federal ammo...

A real delight to shoot, and it packs a punch!

Major Erhart's paper talks about swapping upper receivers on the AR-15 style platform. Swappable upper receivers and quad 1913 rails, argues Major Erhart, give users enough flexibility to move between urban CQB scenarios to longer range DMR missions with the same weapon. The USMC equipped its Force Recon units with the Recon Weapons Kit, which provides a 10.5" barrel upper receiver with quad 1913 rails, interchangeable with the standard USMC M27 (H&K 416) rifle. The 3.5X35 ACOG can be replaced with an EOTECH red dot sight.

76 So, anyway, wound up sending my Leupold rifle scope back to Leupold, again. Failed a tall target test.

Aggravating, as this is the second time I've had trouble with the scope not tracking vertically. I also told Leupold the turrets are mushy. I didn't realize that was a thing until I checked on it.

Anyway, I told Leupold I want the scope replaced as this is the second time I've sent it back. I'm also a bit peeved they didn't do something about the turrets when I first sent the scope back. I may not have asked, but, still, they did rebuild the internals so, you think the guy working on it would have noticed.

80 Saw an interest gadget on Friday at the range. One of the other members that showed up after we did had created a small portable fan that he used to cool down the barrel of the rifle.

He took one of those small fans that are used to fill up pool toys and the like, attached a plastic tube to the outflow on one end and drilled out a rifle casing that would fit the rifle and attached that at the other end.
The amount of air flow coming out of the end of the barrel was impressive. It definitely cooled down the barrel much much quicker than letting it cool down naturally.

Looking at making one to use with my rifle.

You won't like my answer, but my choices for an AR-10 platform are H&K and Knight's Armament. The Army adopted both of these companies' offerings as the M110A1 (KAC) and M110A2 (H&K). H&K guarantees that the barrel on their MR762A4 (civilian AR-10) will shoot within 1-2 MOA for your lifetime. If it shoots 2 or more MOA from a rest, they'll replace it. Blaster zeroed a H&K MR762A4 "Assaulter" (13" barrel SBR) last week and shot overlapping holes with 4 of 5 rounds on the final adjustment at 25 yards. Both H&K and KAC are premium outfits charging premium prices for their stuff. H&K wants $4500 for the MR762A4, and KAC is in that range as well. That's without any optics, BTW.

I've seen benchrest guys do something similar with the tube but just blowing into it by mouth. Pretty much by definition, they're all "on the spectrum."

I was going through my round count notes and noticed one of my rifles was showing sufficient rounds to need a cleaning. But, I was almost certain I'd already cleaned it. And, the problem was, I'd shot the rifle since it had been cleaned, if, indeed, I'd forgotten to note date of most recent cleaning.

Sigh.

So, I cleaned, and, yep, it wasn't all that dirty, leading me to believe, yes, yes it had been cleaned. However, duly recorded, this time, in the round count log.

I’ve been doing more .22 plinking lately. Both my Ruger Mark IV and the lever action Henry rifle.

I love how the fundamentals remain the same, recoil is negligible, ammo is cheap and it’s less flash and bang. I can shoot .22 all day and be happy as a bird.

In two days, Grateful went from 8” groups at 25 yards with an iron sights AR 15, to ringing steel at 860 yards with an AR 10 in .308 and a 6.5 Creedmoor. CBD got TRex ringing steel at 530 with the AR 10 - standing at a barricade. No bench shooting for him!

It's a mostly different platform. Biggest differences are the use of double stack magazines vs. the 1911's single stack and primary chambering of 9mm vs. .45 ACP for the 1911.

I don't know if it's an actual trade name but "2011" usually means a pistol that operates internally like a 1911 but uses a double-stack mag and usually a polymer frame. Strayer-Tripp debuted it some time in the mid-90s. Then that company split into Strayer-Voight and STI. I believe STI is what became Stacatto.

I saw that SOCOM has started a program (HICAR) to develop a high-pressure 5 56 mm round (82,000 psi vs 62,000) and new high-pressure firearm components to increase performance of existing M4 carbines. The requirements included performance from an 11.5" barrel, which seems awfully short for a rifle. Anyway, the stated objective is to increase effective range of the M4 from 300 yards to 600.

134 I went to the Virginia Gun Collectors' Association's gun show this weekend. I saw a Colt Army Special in .38 Special with most of the finish still intact on a table for $700. I couldn't resist that price, so I picked it up. The serial number checks out to 1925. For something that's 101 years old, it still looks pretty good and still functions quite well. In fact, the turn line on the cylinder is barely visible. I'm guessing that it wasn't shot very much.
