Doof needed the night off - all is well, but short notice. Threw together this ONT "quickie style."

We'll kick things off with a bit of self-awareness. Yes, your host this evening was a dumbass. But only that day. I'd appreciate it if everyone would focus on my...nevermind.

Gabbing while adding antifreeze to the radiator. Which in my defense, is right next to the fuel tank. You can fill in the rest of the story about which tank the antifreeze went into.

Pretty cool lounge in the basement of a Chicago restaurant, which got the brain thinking about speakeasies, which are basically bars pretending they are not bars. Or, during COVID, a bar with the windows blacked out where you parked two blocks away and snuck in through the kitchen door. Or so I have been told.

Decent collection of modern speakeasies for your perusal.

This Cuban-style speakeasy is located in the basement of the building that previously housed a bank. Whats more, the bar pays homage to the building’s history by transforming the vault—which serves as the entrance—into a lively lounge area. Once you enter through the vault, you’ll need to provide the staff with a password, which changes daily and can be found on the bar’s social media pages. Just be sure to leave your jeans and tank tops at home: Las Floriditas has a strict dress code.

25 I posted this at the end of the last post as I am always late to everything. However I wanted you all to know:

In my rampaging today, chronic fatigue and stress for six weeks of stuff happening to see if I crack (I don't), I forgot to mention my SIL's new puppy in MS.

She raises these pups to be lapdogs and rather neurotic ones that bark a lot (and bite). Why, living on a farm with a lake, they don't get a rescue or a lab I do not know. She wants this exotic breed who looks like a racoon to me. This was from photos of her carrying the dog in a pouch thing. Which made us all laugh as we are evil people. The puppy looked mad.

Well. The dog is now in training somewhere out of state. I guess in two weeks the 8wk old pup went loco with her and caused fights and angst. She had a trainer come out and observe the dog and agreed he was a bit much (bit part of a brick off of something).

My DIL found an 18 page manual near the dog toys and took a photo. Son and I of course laughed as the large print is the breeder advice (wacko) and the small print is SIL's.

We have not met the dog yet and hope the training is going well til the end of the month.

Yes. Thankfully. The siphon was deployed because the tank had no petcock valve. Was dripping out slowly went I removed the supply line. Discovered once the tank was removed that there were 4 x 4 inch sections of duct tape in the tank. Which is another amusing story - FiL...

"Accidentally made some napalm. Stuck to my arm. I figured oil and vinegar would help separate it from my skin and it seems to be working."

Double-checked the firing order and plug wire origins, as I snugged the connectors onto distributor cap. Turned key. Chugga-chugga, backfire, chugga-no start!

WTF? Well, having spent most of my previous auto-mechy time on Chebbys... I'd laid-on the damned wires *clockwise*. Ferd wanted *counter* clockwise.

Fun fact: early iterations of the Mazda rotary engine had a little tank of antifreeze and a pump to squirt it into the intake manifold in extreme cold weather to enable the apex seals to seal well enough for it to develop enough compression to start.

Pricks and Minidicks gets a judge in Provo UT to issue an injunction that has two paragraphs that seem to directly attack the First Amendment. This was sent to Patreon and the CEO of Patreon told on camera Pricks and Minidicks to stuff it, to go ahead and sue.

Fox 4 in DC, media in Salt Lake City, and even in Oregon have started to cover this case.

My DIL sent me the labs via text and I questioned her care stat. Rampage and enraged don't cut what I was this morning for two days wasted.

This baby had a mild UTI. It had better be so mild it did not reach her kidneys while you dithered around.

I have never sued anyone in my life but I will be even more enraged than this morning. It is not a pretty thing to have an internal rampage. I am sure it did nothing at all for my skin, yet I don't get zits anymore.

My husband, who is not a lawyer, said I can't sue. I will still try if the test is not normal for my sweetie.

I had a doctor appointment Tuesday morning. Took my Kindle e-reader with me. Tuesday afternoon I am home and I look for the Kindle. It is not in the house. I search the interior of the car and don't see it. I call the doctor's office and they don't have it.

I figure it is gone forever, so I log onto Amazon, remotely delete all the content off it, then report it lost/stolen so nobody can use it to download Minotaur Romance novels.

Today, Thursday, I wheel my trash bin to the curb. I turn around and see my Kindle trapped between the windshield and the folding interior sunshade. I must have set it on the dash while I fiddled with the sunshade and then scooped it up when I put up the shade.

I unlocked it at Amazon and now I'm slowly reloading it. It appears to be undamaged from two afternoons of cooking in the sun.

When we first moved to FL and in a rental house, my 2yr old son got really bad diarrhea and I had a newborn baby. Husband at his new job and why we moved. No phone or pediatrician. So I left the baby asleep in a safe playpen and went next door to strangers (old couple who collected those weird German beer steins of men's heads). Locked the door. They let me use the phone and the toddler did not harf in their house.

Meanwhile, I'd locked myself out of the house as I forgot the key due to the toddler's diarrhea.

We could see the baby from a window asleep and I started feeling hormonal and freaked out. The neighbor man took the door off the hinges, which sort of told me that was not safe, but I was inside and my husband came home to the chaos.

257 Trying to replace exhaust fan in a bathroom, I discovered the builders had nailed the housing into the ceiling joist before drywalling the ceiling. No room to pull the framing nail, but just enough to fit a hacksaw blade. Almost had the nail cut when a spray of hot water hit my face. Ran to the water heater to turn off the supply, called a plumber to fix the pipe, and finished extracting the busted fan before he got there. Twofer: act of stupidity and quarterly delurk.

304 Had a leak in the hot water pipe near the heater, fairly easy fix. Got the line isolated and all the adapters in place. Went to cut out the leaky section and cut the cold water line. That was not isolated. Got a brief shower and the opportunity to replace another section. This was yesterday. Yay me....

310 That list of speak easies is missing an authentic one that I used to frequent years ago. The official address is 102 Norfolk St, on the Lower East side of Manhattan. It was, and still is called "The Back Room". It's not advertised, and it has no signs. The only entrance is down a back alley. If you know about it, you know about it. It was in the same place with the same name all the way back in the 1920's. And, it's always full of "people who know."

To enter the historic prohibition area of the bar, you need to pull out a bookshelf (which serves as a door). And they still serve all drinks in tea cups for kicks and giggles.

I know another one over in Lancaster County. It's in Elizabethtown. It's called The Catacombs...which is a cave system under the building...they still serve dinner there and the acoustics are scary. You can hear conversations at other tables across the room perfectly.

I have you all beat. Somewhere in a box in the attic is a photograph I took as a kid sitting on the front porch of the state college quad across the street. In that photo are a whole lot of streakers running in formation with the front person waving an American flag. Lest you wonder...about half of them were women, and at my age at the time, it was a preview of the Promised Land. I can remember that it was a Sunday, and my neighbor was very religious. She ratted me out to my parents....but I still took the photo, and sweated bullets that they wouldn't develop it.

On an X post, click the … in the upper-right. Select Embed post. Select either embed method and copy. Paste it into notepad or anywhere you can look at it.

Somewhere buried in the resultant code will be a link to a t.co URL, something like https://t.co/U81AXNXNmg. Copy that URL for your shortened link.

Why they don't have that easily available on the X post itself is beyond me.

My mind is blown. I was just reading about the optics on the Nancy Grace Roman space telescope's coronograph instrument. This thing is going to be able to image exoplanets (that are close enough) directly. Maybe 150 ly away max.

It does this by blocking out starlight and isolating the incredibly small light signal of those planets in the glare of their host star. How they do this just blows my little mind. It's some fancy adaptive optics that uses thousands of little "pistons" that make *nanometer* deformations in the surface of the mirror. With all the fancy software control, this achieves *picometer* control of the light path. That just blows my mind.

All that will be used to isolate the tiny light from the planet and filter out the light of the star.

Sometimes its regular parts, like special hardware. Basically his inventory system sucks, lol. Not like mine was when I ran my own place. I could find everything. No, I did this *one time* and have regretted it for a year and a half. Hubby would get up in the middle of the night and go "exploring" like a toddler. One time he was just pulling things out of a linen closet, towels and stuff, one by one, looking at them and then tossing them on the floor. Totally absent-minded. It was freaky and frightening.

I was busy getting the hell out of ~~Dodge~~ Portland area during the Covid lockdowns, so I was in and out - a couple of weeks to a month there and the same in AZ. On one of my times there, I called a drinking buddy to shmooze a bit, and he tells me that one of our bars was running under the radar. Only open Friday and Saturday nights after 10, park somewhere else, call the bar when you're about there, have the bartender of waitress vouch for you at the door.
I park at the far end of the 24 hr Albertsons parking lot, out next to the employees cars, and walk the couple of blocks . I call as I'm about there. I walk up to the door at 11:15 and grin at the camera. One of the waitresses recognizes me and the door opens just enough to.left me in. The jukebox and the lights were turned down. There was a big heavy cloth taped over the one window. A lot of overserving occurred. Wound up doing shots with the waitress who knew me. I left at 03:45 after drinking coffee for about an hour. There were still.about 20 people there.
The next ~~morning~~ afternoon, my wife asked what time I got in. When I said 04:30, we had a long discussion.

I convinced her that I really was at a bar, not chasing wild women 😁. I explained that it was like my usual night out, only instead of 8PM to.1AM, it was 11PM to 4AM, and that was because it was illegal for them to be open. It was interesting, but not unique. I had previously been in a couple of bars after hours when they weren't supposed to be serving, but in both cases I knew the owners, and there were only 5 or 6 people.
As an aside, the difference between PDX and northern AZ were striking. Both "local" Rez (Apache & Navajo) were locked down, but otherwise, most stores and restaurants were open and less than half the people were wearing masks. Portland was like a ghost town, and I saw people wearing N95 respirators while driving alone.
I don't think.that the serious cases and fatalities, other than the Rez, were drastically different between the two areas. The (father) Indians had problems due to their practice of tight communal.living.

Something fascinating about telescope images. Except in the cases of very nearby objects, or very large objects not too far away (like Betelgeuse) a telescope does not see a point source, the true angular diameter of the source. It only sees a diffraction patter, a smudge due to the wave nature of light. That central smudge is dubbed the Airy disk. That is the minimum width of anything you focus on. The larger the aperture and the smaller the wavelength of the light you're looking at, the smaller the Airy disk.

What Roman does with all that fancy small scale precision optics is just cancel out that Airy disk of a star. What remains is the light actually coming from stuff very close to the true point source.

It will not give any clear high resolution image of an exoplanet. It will give some spectra of light reflected by the exoplanet that will allow them to determine the chemical composition of the atmosphere, if any, and all that. And maybe signals of biochemicals and all that.

Yeah, dementia does seem to be similar for many.

Hubby already had mobility issues, so I set up the guest bed for him. He could view most of the main floor area from there, as well as his tv. The only rooms he couldn't see were kitchen and dining room.

Since he couldn't bend down easily, I stashed my main car keys and the truck-- secondary vehicle-- keys in a lower cabinet in kitchen. (no, the other keys aren't there, I tore it all apart looking the other day!)

It's not a huge priority, unless I lose the main keyrings LOL. Just scratching my head here, late at night...

The worst is when their children - your elders - insist on frantically dumpstering the whole home ASAP because they can't be bothered and are in a hurry to sell it. I have seen this in my own family and in others, at estate sales. Not just hidden money but all manner of wild things.

My kids won't have to deal with that. Think of Roman as more v 1.0 of this coronagraph technology. Reading the details, it will be able to isolate a lot of Jupiter sized exoplanets and so forth, but earth sized worlds not so much (unless they got really lucky).

V 2.0 and on will likely be able to, based on the experience with Roman here.

It also has a gravitational microlensing thingamabob that will detect exoplanets much better than current methods. In fact in may detect an exo*moon* or two. The minimum mass is a smidge bigger than our Moon, Callisto mass roughly, IIRC. Provided they are far enough away from the primary, it will be able to detect it.

By the time Roman's primary mission is through, they expect to expand the number of known exoplanets to over 100K!

Just today I dug out a specialized mounting bracket that has been stored for 4 moves over 15 years. But hey I saved $50 not having to buy a new one. The first exoplanet was discovered in 1992. And that was crazy (and very rare) thing around a freakin' pulsar. How they hell those form is a big question. A regular planet around a star big enough to form a neutron star would not survive, they don't think, even if it could form in the first place. Very massive stars don't appear to form planets too easily. All that radiation disrupts the discs.

The first exoplanet around a normal star was discovered in '96. To me, that's basically last week, but it's been 30 years. There are 6000+ confirmed exoplanets now.

Well, in harley land its never "might", but when. We get our asses saved all the time by new stashed parts. My biggest pissoff is he saunters around the shop looking for parts when he should just be ordering it. If I'm doing a complete engine rebuild order a fucking master gasket set, don't wander around the shop looking for individual gaskets. Thats the stash, thats the shit that saves our ass in a pinch. He did it today. I said order a complete gasket set. He shows me head gaskets and rocker box gaskets. Seriously? what about the oil pump, the pushrod tubes, the lifter blocks, cam seal, etc etc. Are you going to wander around the desert for each of those? Then when we don't have something he gets pissed. Well wtf?

Exactly. The best part is the master gasket sets aren't broken up into year groups like they used to be. Using the shovelhead for example. They made that engine from 1966 up to 1984-85. A lot of changes during that time, but now they include ALL of the different gaskets in one set for all the years, so you get a good pile of gaskets. The ones you don't use go into the stash and now you have a good amount of spares. Many times I hit the stash for an oddball. We do keep a shit ton of gaskets in stock, but there's always one you need in a pinch. Stop ordering the sets and the stash goes barren.

But you can delete the leading https://www. and also anything after a ? since that's just parameters passed to a script. For example, if you link to a specific number of seconds into a YouTube video, that number will be after the question mark. The best for minimizing is Amazon, since you also don't need the descriptive text.

Here's an example where I just broke it up with a space, so it would take you effort to use:

https://www.amazon.com/Traffic-Live -at-Santa-Monica/dp/B001CRRADU

Strip it down to this, and you can highlight, right-click and Go To:

I read a lot of LitRPG on Royal Road, so there are a lot of newbie first-time rank amateurs trying their hand at a story (one chapter at a time), and one actually had the MC (dropped by a portal into an alien wilderness) trying to find civilization by going *upstream*. It turned out to be a case of where it was also the author, not just the character, who didn't know any better. So I'm aware that such people exist, but still amazed.
