I love Tillamook. Mom and Dad grew up in the PNW, and for them it was the local cheese.
now that I live in Boise I find it plentiful and inexpensive. Their extra sharp white cheddar is excellent.

There is also an air museum at the old blimp hangar South of town, and if you go in August 5-8 that is the county fair, which I think is one of the best county fairs in Oregon.
Then you could also drive down to Cannon Beach and look at Haystack rock, and Seaside is worth a look.

One of the best things about our move to Idaho is that the Oregon coast is one long day drive away. Perfect for a three or four day weekend. Memorial Day weekend we were in Newport, and had a great lunch on the wharf, and watched the sea lions yelling at one another for the best spot to sun themselves.
We are already planning future trips: okay, next time we got to Bandon, then Cannon Beach, etc...

I pray it won't happen, but if it does, that might be the proverbial straw. The vast majority of Oregon folks are just regular folks. Ranchers, farmers, hunters, fishermen. much like Colorado, the rot is in small areas, Portland, Salem, Eugene, Astoria. Central and eastern Oregon, in particular, want to become part of Greater Idaho.

Speaking of meteor craters, in 2029 asteroid Aphophis will come within GSO distance of earth (20K miles). Uncertainty in trajectory is now down to a couple km, and JPL assures no chance of impact in the next 100 years.
If Apophis hit, it would be around 2 GT, ~40 Tsar Bombas. That would be a region killer, but not a dino-killer global extinction event (although it would be a bitch for survivors for a while).

I grew up in Cody. Every year, before Memorial Day, they would have a free day for locals. I loved hanging out for the day. I would browse the firearms and such, but spent most of my time in the art gallery. So many C.M. Russell and Fredric Remington, and so many more artists. They had a whole aisle of Russell letters to friends and family, and he would include quick watercolor sketches along the margins. Even his letters were works of art.

I think that measure is an op so Tina Kotek can oppose and save us all if we vote for her. I think she already said she would veto it if it somehow passes. The thing is conservatives Ed Diehl, Chris Dudley, and Christine Drazan will definitely veto this measure and they aren't buddies with crazy activists that wrote it and forged a bunch of signatures like Tina Kotek is.

Exact time of Apophis closest approach will April 12, 2028 21:45Z, or 5:45PM EDT. Peak brightness will be roughly 3.1 magnitude. But it will be daylight here in NA and by the time it gets dark it will had dimmed to much. Europe and Africa and maybe some of SA will get a naked view.

Had dinner. Watched the start of a new series with the man who puts up with me. Then realized I thought it was Friday vs Wednesday.
In the recent progression of confusing days since the near cholera, this is progress as at least I am moving forward vs thinking it was Monday.
The good news is our baby girl, without the help of her highly respected pediatrician professor (who still wears a mask I was told), has decided to be cured on her own without her stinking doctor's help.
In Ace's Cafe I realized the confusion when I wished him a happy weekend. I mean, he could take off two days with my permission now. You all could.
All is well. No new disasters. Eldest son found a new job a week ago. Son is still in Australia and I have not read of any horrors there. To be honest I've been too busy to know what is going on and may keep it that way til tomorrow, which is Thursday.

When my family lived in Parkersburg, W.Va, back in the late 50's, early 06's, we did the Fenton factory tour many times.
For a kid watching the glass blowing was pretty amazing. I remember they had a seconds shop and my sisters and I had quite a collection of little Knick Knacks.

I was a teenager when it was built. My friends and I had marvelous times exploring. It's two miles from the house but I haven't been in this century except for a few dedications. My uncle's name is on the wall there dedicated to all who worked on the Saturn V and made notable contributions to the Space program.
OTOH, I have been to the National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, FL many times until I lost the ability to walk without assistance. I took thousands of photographs knowing I'd never get to see them again if I didn't.
The National Museum of the Air Force, Dayton, OH can be viewed online in 3D although it is on my bucket list.
Also, FWIW, I worked on testing the Space Shuttle at all of the test stands as a subcontractor for Bendix Aerospace in the late 80's. It was an interesting time seeing the interior of the SRB and working around the External Tank, they were huge.
Free is good.

A National Park Pass won't work at Monument Valley, though. It looks like a NP, but it's not. Tribal land. A NP Pass will avail you nothing, I discovered. They LOVE to decline those and explain why those aren't accepted.

Avoided Monument Valley on the road home. Went via Page and Kanab instead. Best way to see MV would be to hire a plane in Page. The road from Flagstaff to Page is littered with roadside stands peddling "Indian-made" jewelry and trinkets.

Their 3D simulator there infuriates me. It will by default lock on the selected object and give you some oblique view. The first thing you want to do is *unlock* the camera, then *reset* the camera. That will put the Sun in the center of the frame. Now grab screen with the mouse and drag it down to a polar view so you're looking down on the plane of the solar system. Now adjust the time and date to get close to 2029, adjust the speed if desired, and then let it run.
You'll see it almost hit earth. At that point you can adjust the view to the side and see the full 3D picture of how close it gets.

Yup. I was a medic in the Army, and our NCO was a pudgy Puerto Rican woman who was unable to pass a PT test, and hated men. My buddy and I were ignored for promotion or any kind of minor citations. And yet, another dullard woman (black) was promoted ahead of us, despite having been in country a shorter time. She was thick as a brick, in the head.
So, yeah, the double standard has been going on for a fucking long time in the military. A huge reason I did not reenlist after Desert Storm. I was fucking sick of it all.

Still miss my Guadalcanal vet docent colleague from the days as docent at the Flying Leathernecks' museum. And the other WWII vets who volunteered or visited.
And some of the visitors. A 50-something Chinese-American guy brought his elderly grandfather. The father instantly recognized the TBF, pointing and saying (in Chinese to his son) "that's one, that's one!". Son explained his dad was a kid living next to a Japanese airfield on Taiwan (Formosa) during Task Force 38's rampage in the region in 1945. The boys cheered the US planes strafing the Japanese airfield - and the mothers went nuts to shut the kids up and get them inside, of course!

I am just glad that I did basic at Fort Sill before they mixed men and women. And if you think my stance is harsh, talk to my wife. I met her at Fort Sam, and she has very strong feelings about women in the military. As in, NO. Except for the medical field, and some other support roles.

Went recently with my buddy who did 25+ years in the teams. There were 3 sections/panels where he chuckled and said he participated. And he enjoyed the artifact displays, gear and weapons from WWII to today.
If you go (and it would make an excellent, if intense, one-two punch with the USS Midway a few blocks away), you should arrange to also drive over to Coronado and down the main road south of "town" - decent chance of seeing BUDS guys running (or walk on the beach south the Hotel Del to the "no entry" zone, if lucky you'll see the guys doing "log PT" or getting "wet and sandy" in the surf). Of course you should drive over to/around Coronado anyway.

I know! I keep reading of how great they are for those who don't become psychotic like me from them. I was sleep deprived and tried. I never wake normal and refreshed.
I think there's a magic zone of 15-20 min "power naps." I would not know but maybe will try.
Both of my grandmothers were firm believers of 1pm naps daily and lived to be in their 90's. I am not sure if I want to live into my 90's, for starters, and I never napped as a child.

I forget about OSIRIS-APEX, formally OSIRIS-REX. In the REX incarnation it captured a sample of asteroid Bennu and returned it to earth via a reentry capsule in Sept 2023. The drogue parachutes didn't deploy right, but the mains did and it survived, although it landed harder than intended.

Here is a little known fact, and it occurred to me while I was reading about Karmelo Anthony:
The O.J. trial should've been held in the Brentwood Division of the LA court, instead of the Central (i.e., the downtown) Division, because the murders occurred in Brentwood.
The court MOVED the trial from it's regular and presumed venue in Brentwood... for the convenience of (wait for it!) the press! Because the Central (downtown) Division could better accommodate the large press presence.
In Brentwood, at that time anyway, O.J. would've gotten a largely white jury.
The Manson prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi, wrote a whole BOOK about all the prosecution's many mistakes in the O.J. trial. But moving it to downtown L.A. was probably fatal.

My body clock is forged in granite. Years in music did that. Sleep before 3am? Not happening. I existed on 6 hours of sleep for decades. When I had surgery a few years ago I finally thought I broke the cycle. I was passing out at midnight or before, getting up at 6am and forcing myself to sleep more because there is nothing to do at 6am. After about 6 months, my body went back to the old schedule as if to say ok dude, vacation is over.

Yep, that fancy flying is something else. And it's a long game. That trajectory video starts right at the spacecraft's close pass to earth to drop off the sample return capsule. They fine tuned the pass to give it the correct gravity-kick from earth to get it on track. That meant getting a little closer to the Sun than the thing was designed to handle, but they worked out some clever tricks to keep from getting too hot.
Note how it makes a couple more close passes by earth afterward which further adjusts the orbit, and lo and behold, on April 13, 2029, all three, earth, Apophis, and the spacecraft converge.
That takes some fancy orbital mechanics.

Kindltot has it right. Under Batson v. Kentucky, the prosecutor must state ab race neutral reason for using a peremptory strike against a venireperson.
The reason better not be "merely pretextual" either, because Batson strikes can be appealed in the event of conviction.
A prosecutor NEVER has enough peremptory strikes to get rid of everybody he/she loathes. The number varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In federal court, the prosecutor used to get 6, and the defense got 10. That's fair, right?/s

If "accommodating the press" WAS the true reason they moved the trial downtown, it was a clear case of letting the tail wag the dog. To hell with the press! Leave the trial where the murders occurred.
The O.J. prosecution was SO inept, I can easily believe they (Marcia Clark) might've acquiesced in letting the trial go downtown to protect the record on appeal.

The Bug died a long time ago, but he was a prosecutor's prosecutor. He ran for L.A. State's Attorney (whatever they call the job in L.A.) & lost badly. He wasn't universally loved.

He published other books, including "And the Sea Will Tell," I think. About another interesting murder and trial.

We hiked around the lake at Huntsville in April. It was a little smoky from prescribed burns but nice.
I recommend Lake Livingston. It is a small but cool state park for those who aren't used to the Big Pines. We spent half a day there hiking around. I can recommend a very cool AirBNB for you and your lady. Not at the state park, but on the lake.

The most depressing analysis that I saw at the time, or rather just right after, was grading the defense an F, and the prosecution an F-minus. I don't remember his name, I think he was on a talk show regarding his book about the trial. But the essential point was that it was a fundamental mistake to try to draw any kind of larger point from the trial, as everyone else was doing, because it was so wildly unrepresentative of the normal practice of law, and each side was only competitive thanks to the incompetence of the other.

The last time I was in the neighborhood, I guess a decade ago, it was still largely country. A few bougie houses huddled together, hiding in some trees on a hill. I was living in Germany. My new fourth grade teacher (she got to the school a few days after the school year started and cobbled together her class with other students from other classes on her first day) and I were talking about things because she took an interest in books I had checked out of the library. At some point I mentioned that in a month my father was going to take me on a road trip to West Berlin. Then she said “I’ve been to Berlin.” She told me the place to go was the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie. It’s a museum dedicated to, among other things, how people escaped East Berlin and got into the West after the Wall went up. Little did she know she was creating a virulent anti-communist. For that and many other reasons, she’s easily my favorite teacher from elementary school.
