Space Master X7! Way better than Space Master X6! ![]() We have had some great cigar reviews here on the Weasel's thread and I for one certainly appreciate them. I have discovered some great new sticks and I hope that some of my reviews have assisted others. And this brings me to my subject of the day. If you bother to check your credit card statement, you may discover the spending on cigars can, at times, be...ahhh...pricey. In order to protect these investments, it is necessary to store the news treasures properly. So, let's talk about humidors. Buying a humidor requires balancing your collection size with storage conditions. Most vendors recommend purchasing a humidor capable of holding 20-30% more cigars than you currently own. This helps to ensure proper airflow. I just keep mine about 1/2 full and it works just fine. Standard wooden desktop options start around $150 to $300, but you can find some that are cheaper. Serious shoppers prepare for sticker shock. I've seen them as high as $5k. Yikes! You can also find electric/cabinet humidors and that regulate temperature and humidity and are good for greater numbers of cigars. These aren't for me as I typically buy just enough to enjoy over a few months, so I don't need something that fancy. Here are some things to keep in mind when considering a humidor: --Assuming you go for a wooden humidor, one thing you want to have is Spanish Cedar Lining. Any cedar will do, but this is the gold standard, and the wood is perfect for absorbing and releasing moisture. --Use a Digital Hygrometer, not the analog (needle) version. The analog hygrometers are notorious for being inaccurate and I have found this to be true in each one I have owned. To track the temperature, just throw in a small thermometer. I keep my humidor at about 70% humidity and room temperature year-round. --Ensure the humidor has a good seal. A weak seal will dry out your cigars. An easy way to check a wooden humidor is to do the dollar bill test. Close the lid on a dollar bill. If you can pull it out easily, the seal is too loose. --If you purchase a wooden humidor you will want to season it before stocking it with your favorite smokes. Wipe the interior with distilled water, or use a high-RH Boveda pack. This prevents the wood from stealing the moisture from the cigars. Lastly I clean mine once a year. Depending on where you live, mold could be a problem over time. Cleaning is simple and a great way to keep your cigars ready to enjoy. The picture shows the three that I use frequently. The box is a typical office/desk style humidor. The travel case is handy, and this one is from Thompson Cigars. The small "single cigar" carrier is for the golf course. Pro Tip: DO NOT put this one in your carry-on bag if you fly. The TSA guys enjoy watching you drink the contents from the screw top side. ;-) I hope this has been helpful. Enjoy.Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you! Cigarpage.com Famous-smoke.com Cigarsdaily.com Neptunecigar.com Smallbatchcigar.com Bobalu Cigar Company Cigarbid.com Nicks Cigar World New! A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Gunz!
And humidorz! Thanks Diogenes, great humidor info. I think about upgrading to a thermo-lectric humidor, but my situation is similar to yours. Storage mostly for near-term consumption, not doing any aging. But I’ve opted for the “tupperdor” solution so far. High quality airtight plastic containers with Spanish cedar trays and blocks, Boveda humidity packs. Several different size containers. Cheap, adaptable, works perfectly. Use 69% RH packs, experimenting in one tupperdor with 65%. Lots of guys and some industry types say often more flavor @65%. Posted by: rhomboid at May 31, 2026 07:19 PM (Pp3EP) 25

And Idaho Spudboy with another good storage option.
As usual climate considerations here are minimal, so that helps. I usually “dry box” a stick overnight before burning it to dry it just a bit below the 70ish% storage RH. I haven’t bought a Boveda pack in years. Recharging them is easy. Friend of mine knows the Boveda owner but I haven’t shared my recharge tip with the friend yet. Shot a tactical shotgun match this morning. As usual old school/basic for me, Mossberg 500. So not a bit tacticool. Fun match, not as much steel or poppers launching clays as sometimes though.
One guy had the mag-fed AK based shotgun from Palmetto State Armory. He used it well. With a pump it’s basically a reloading contest more than shooting one, but fun. Posted by: rhomboid at May 31, 2026 07:38 PM (Pp3EP) 47

Good evening all
Had a very productive session at the range. I went fully expecting to rent a Kimber CDS9 Classic and then purchase one. Blster brought SRA Blaster's model so I could compare the grips. First thing: if I bought it, I would need to put a sight on it. Then pulled out my G48 with Holosun and shot all 3. Whelp, I shoot perfectly with the G48. Barrel is only maybe 3/4 in longer and everything else the same. Why spend the money for CC if the Glock works. Decided to buy a holster a try it the next session. Maybe buy a rifle instead.🤠 Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at May 31, 2026 07:40 PM (kJmSS) 50

As swa reports I convinced her not to buy a gun. Or at least not a particular gun. As we have been shooting sra blaster's CDS9 a good bit I have found it is a very good shooter at 10 yards and less.
While swa can shoot that thing like crazy with its dot, she can also shoot her G48 like crazy. I told her that should be her carry gun. Plus it has the advantage of being purple. And so she can (as she said) spend the Kimber money on a rifle. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at May 31, 2026 07:44 PM (NlEaG) 57

At our DMV MGC session today, I brought some new firearms to zero. First up was the H&K VP9CC. This is the German version of the CC9. This pistol included a Vortex optic. I had difficulty zeroing the optic, but the pistol does shoot pretty good groups. Next up, a Colt AR-15A4 (20" barrel AR-15) with a 6X48 ACOG. I had better luck with this one, getting a zero in 20 rounds. Last up was the H&K MR762A4 "Assaulter," a .308 SBR with a 13" barrel, a Huxworks flow-through suppressor, and a 3.5X35 ACOG. With Blaster on the trigger, we got this rifle zeroed in 15 rounds with 5 more to confirm the zero from me. H&K guarantees 1 MOA out of these barrels and they're not kidding. Blaster got 4 out 5 overlapping holes on the final set of zero rounds. This rifle can definitely deliver the accuracy if you do your fundamentals like Weasel tells you to. Lesson learned for next time: Suppressed rifles should be shot first during a range session. The suppressor got too hot to touch after just 20 rounds total. It took at least 15-20 minutes of waiting just to let the suppressor cool down to case the rifle and suppressor (still attached) just to get it off the range and clear the lane.

CBD a few years back I did some half-a**ed research and reduced recoil #4 buck was the sweet spot for defensive purposes. I have a bunch of Hornady 00 low recoil LE stuff, couldn’t find #4 at the time. Any of these loads mentioned will be fine at self-defense range if, gawd forbid.

Sounds like an in-person testimonial that his suppressor wasn't suppressing his slugs much -- does that make sense?
Posted by: Schnorflepuppy (OT but harmless) at May 31, 2026 07:48 PM (xVpNO) No, it wasn't a suppressor. It was just a big barrel. Little reason to use slugs unless defense against a bear or at distances greater than buckshot is good for a confirmed stop. Few of us need to breach doors and a slug fired indoors in traditional home construction is likely to go through several walls perhaps hitting something you don't want to hit.
Plus practice as CBD noted, is unpleasant even in gas guns but required more than ever if you are firing slugs because you have to learn both recoil control and recovery so you can fire another slug in timely fashion if you miss. Slugs take a noticeable time to recover and fire the next round, especially if you don't practice. Wise also to use every bit of recoil reduction (recoil absorbing stocks, mercury inserts in the butt, etc.) For the most part, leave them to hunters and stick with buckshot. 00, 1, or even 4 are good enough for self defense against humans if they aren't wearing body armor or some such. 2 3/4 length shells are just fine too, you get a lot more recoil versus marginally improved stopping power if you go up to 3 or 3.5 inch length 12 gauge shells. Xtra length is mainly for hunters outdoors because shotgun shell velocities drop quicker than rifle bullets. Posted by: whig at May 31, 2026 08:13 PM (E4rtv) 121

Stopped in at one of the local gun shops. Staring at me like a puppy in a pet shop window was a High Standard Sentinel revolver. I've had a couple of these over the years, liked them, so I gave this one a good home. Very accurate at approximately 25 yards. Stout but smooth double action, nice single action. The ergonomics are great on these, the designer putting a lot of thought into the grip angle (nearly replicating a Colt Navy). This one is a R107 series, late 60s vintage.

Thompson Cigar used to have a series of cigar starter kits - ten premium cigars, cheap lighter, cheap cutter, cheap humidifier stick, and a small cheap humidor (not much bigger than a cigar box). I think they were about $40 bucks. Less than the cost of the cigar sampler themselves. Only one per purchaser though, and they kept records. I got one with Rocky Patel, one with Oliva, and another which the product line escapes me for now...
Picked up a cheap 16 bottle wine cooler from Home Despot. Three of those little humidors fit in it quite nicely. Bottom shelf has a wooden cigar box (too tight for the Thompson humidor). The top temperature setting for the wine cooler is 65. For reds, I guess. Digital humidistat shows it holds 65-70% humidity and 65-70 degrees pretty well. I think the wine cooler was like $50. Glass front, light, looks very classy on my work bench. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at May 31, 2026 08:27 PM (/lPRQ) 142

Revolvers for protection. Hot diggety! I say the stuff below since I'm not in combat, law enforcement, or even timed competition.
- If I need more than 5 or 6 rounds I'm screwed anyway. An extra 10 rounds won't help much. - No failures to eject or stove pipes or worry about limp wristing if you get distracted when things go sideways. Pull the trigger on a revolver and it goes bang. - If you can learn to use a DA revolver trigger, you can shoot anything. From a handloading point of view: - It's easier to load cartridges that space on a rim than on the case mouth that calls for a careful taper crimp. - No concerns about having enough power to cycle the action. If the bullet clears the muzzle you're good for the next shot. And a lighter load may offer easier and faster shooting while still being lethal. - Bullet shape doesn't matter since there is no feed ramp to consider. Not that I have an opinion or anything. Posted by: Weasel The only 'trick' with it that I have is I consolidate the cigars into two or three boxes every now and then and introduce new cigars into the empty box. Evening, gun and cigar aficionados!
I'm primarily a pipe smoker, as JTB and other pipers here know. But I have tried some of the small cigars or cigarillos from Romeo y Julieta. Real cigar whizzes would probably laugh. But they are good for a quick smoke when you don't have a lot of time. And, if you so decide, you can break up one of the little sticks into a pipe blend, such as an English with latakia, to give it a bit more strength. There are pipe blends available that feature cigar leaf as an ingredient, after all. I cannot imagine smoking a real, full-size cigar. Especially not at the prices for a whole box now -- or even for a single cigar. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 31, 2026 08:38 PM (wzUl9) 157

Posted by: whig at May 31, 2026 08:20 PM (E4rtv) Whig's not kidding. I purchased a P7 PSP (German police surplus) a few years back, liked shooting in, and immediately began looking for extra magazines. Pretty much any P7 magazine variant is super scarce and expensive IF you can even find them. I ended up buying another P7 PSP for $3k off of Gunbroker because it came with four magazines. This price was only a bit more than what it would have cost to buy the magazines alone. Posted by: Ed L at May 31, 2026 08:39 PM (BCwQW) 159

Last week I talked about the 1911 slide and barrel combo that cdnnsports.com has for $150. My intention is to turn an out-dated, much modified competition gun back into a service pistol.
The parts arrived yesterday. They look nicely machined and the barrel fits the slide with no problems. Alas, the slide was not a drop in fit onto my frame and will need some work to get it to fit. Fortunately, I might have another 1911 or two about the house to tide me over until I get this one working. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 31, 2026 08:42 PM (UNIfT) 163

And I've often thought that a revolver would suit me better, both as a defensive weapon and as a hobby, than an automatic. I love the way automatics look. Alley Butcher, well done. Do you use humidification packs or anything?
Posted by: rhomboid Bottom of the wine cooler I put a couple of the cheap humidifier sticks. I put those in wet... could use a wet sponge for the same effect. The humistat stays fairly constant. If it drops you can bet the sticks got dry. In the small humidors I have the sticks (moist, not wet) and a Boveda type pack. I noticed that the Boveda packs swell or shrink. If I put a wet stick in there the packs seem to absorb the moisture. I don't like that so only put moist sticks in and then the packs don't seem to grow or shrink much. I look at it the packs are a humidity buffer. Also, I'm using only distilled water. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at May 31, 2026 08:44 PM (/lPRQ) 169

Oh also - last week we were on blaster acres. We located an area that will make for a good handgun range, 25 yards. There is a small 10-12 foot elevation change on the property that creates a real live berm and a part that is actually kid of cleared out already. It's like it was made to be a range. So that was good. But we were too busy farming to actually shoot.
Took an AR15 pistol with Super Safety to shoot there and we didn't end up shooting. I rise in dispute. I won't argue handloading, there you are very likely correct. Revolvers, not having a slide and recoil spring to worry about, or feed ramps, have more latitude available. I'd stick to Rugers though unless you are very good at loading to SAMI guide. That said, they are inferior to automatics except in narrow exceptions. Recoil is greater out of revolver. Bulk is greater. Capacity is lower. Reloads are slower. You can talk about settling problems with 6 rounds or less but considering that we are training for what is likely an unusual scenario to begin with, best to be ready for the worst case, not best case. Trigger pull is usually worse, unless thumb-cocking, which means accuracy is worse and that's a problem. A revolver is better than nothing. It is also lethal. But automatics are better. I enjoy shooting the Ruger Mark II competition model, the CZ75b, and GI-style 45. But the history of revolvers is richer, from Colt black powder percussion guns to Smith K frames to Ruger Blackhawks. Add in the versatility for ammo that revolvers offer and they always have a place in my heart. And I don't have to pick up the brass. (The ground gets further away each year.) But looking up buckshot, apparently Federal makes a low recoil 1/3/4 inch shotshell with 00 buck designed to fragment. Probably a pump gun only load but interesting none the less. "Federal Premium Personal Defense Ammunition is designed just for personal protection. Turn your shotgun into the ultimate defensive platform with Force X2 from Federal Premium. Its copper-plated 00 FX2 buckshot pellets are specially engineered to split into two equal-size pieces on impact. This creates twice as many wound channels, improves the transfer of energy from the payload to the target, and minimizes the potential for over-penetration, reducing the risk to bystanders. Force X2 is also loaded for more manageable recoil, allowing the shooter to stay on target for faster follow-ups and better accuracy in a self-defense situation." Most recent addition to laager de blaster. I got a Pietta Copper Canyon 4.75 in barrel in .38/.357 with a 9mm cylinder, too. Copper Canyon has brass trigger and a case hardened receiver.
I think I scored it all for less than $500 shippped. It is old school no bar safety (it has a safety of sorts with the cylinder pin but I wouldn't use it.) I like it. 214 I have a sneaking desire for a Colt Single Action Army clone. Not a concealed carry weapon at all, no, but a classic.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius Get one with a transfer bar safety. Dealing with the SAA without one requires substantial practice in loading, and firing. A Blackhawk or a Vacquero if you want fancy from Ruger are more versatile and better built firearms while greatly resembling the SAA at a close look. If you want an understudy in 22 LR, you can get the Double Nine used High Standard which is a double action that looks to be single. Ruger and others like Heritage make some true Single Action 22 LRs that are fun enough to handle and shoot. Unless you have a particularly hankering for 45 Colt, I suggest getting a 38 Special/357 Magnum version of the SAA real or clone. Much cheaper to shoot and far easier to obtain ammo unless you look to get into reloading. Posted by: whig at May 31, 2026 09:19 PM (E4rtv) 231

Wolfus, depends on the stick and the smoker, but a robusto rarely lasts me much less than an hour. And I generally manage very low cost for cigars, with some effort. A $15 stick in a store can be found for $5 online in many cases.
I have a small briar and a nice Haym Pinhas meerschaum from Istanbul (simple carving, bowl-shaped, grapes) that I do still use a few times in winter. Here, winter is more of an idea, sort of like Antifa to the late ridiculous FBI director Wray. But I still get them out a bit. Posted by: rhomboid at May 31, 2026 *** I'm a nicotine lightweight. An hour with a cigar would be too much for me. My pipe sessions tend to run 30-40 minutes at the outside, with breaks, and I still have to be careful about loading too much of a strong blend into the bowl Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 31, 2026 09:21 PM (wzUl9) 234

The safari hunting writer Peter Hathaway Capstick recommend using #1 Buck instead of 00 Buck when tracking wounded leopards through brush. His reasoning was #1 shells had more pellets and the pellets were almost as big as the 00 ones.
I had occasion to use the #1 load once. Not on a leopard. I found it to be quite effective. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 31, 2026 09:27 PM (UNIfT) 241
A revolver is better than nothing. It is also lethal. But automatics are better.
Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards Eternal argument. Personally, if you don't spend time training or maintaining firearms, get a revolver just for self defense. Semi automatics require more care as do their ammo and magazines plus you have to be prepared to handle malfunctions. Revolvers, if they have a substantial malfunction not related to ammo, then you throw it at the critter and run. Kind of like a jammed shotgun in that respect. But if one gets a firearm and shoves it in a drawer for a couple of years with no training, you are more likely to be able to fire it successfully at bad breath range even you have green verdigris on the cases. And on the other hand, if one is hunting, revolvers again are better than semi autos--more accurate at a distance, even an old K Frame with a lot of years will outshoot all but match semi automatics, and for the most part, if you truly want to bring down dinosaurs (or grizzlies), only a revolver will do it. For a grizzly bear, even a 10mm begins to look puny. For people with a modicum of practice, responsible enough maintain it. then semi auto for sure. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy ===== Not a fan of Capstick for the obvious reasons but others have claimed virtues for the #1 and you get a few more pellets than reduced 00 buckshot (usually 9). Not that many load it anymore except at hunting season though. But, of all the shotshell loadings, buck shot and slug loads are some of the easiest to do and where you get some of the best cost savings from. Posted by: whig at May 31, 2026 09:34 PM (E4rtv) 243
184 ... "they [revolvers] are inferior to automatics except in narrow exceptions. Recoil is greater out of revolver. Bulk is greater. Capacity is lower. Reloads are slower. You can talk about settling problems with 6 rounds or less but considering that we are training for what is likely an unusual scenario to begin with, best to be ready for the worst case, not best case."
MAE, Most of your points are correct and I considered them when I decided on a revolver for protection. I don't find revolver recoil greater than a comparable power semi. I don't feel a double stack semi is much less bulky than a snubby revolver, at least not for pocket carry. I compromised by planning for the more likely scenario, not the worst case, aware it was a compromise. A real consideration was Mrs. JTB. She is small and lacks hand strength and neither of us is getting younger. Racking a slide can be a problem. I know there are techniques to compensate but they add another level of complexity in a stressful situation. She can handle a DA trigger much easier and is more comfortable with that setup. Also, semi recoil has more muzzle flip than most revolvers and that gives her more trouble. Posted by: JTB at May 31, 2026 09:35 PM (yTvNw) 244

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius 45 Ammo is obscenely priced. Last time I checked, about 1 buck per round for a box of 50 if you could find it. Well worth reloading and not hard to do whenever we don't have some crisis going on. Single six is a good gun but prices have really went up. Ruger came out with a cheaper made single action 22 LR to compete with Heritage (Taurus owns them now). The old Double 9 from High Standard dates from the late 50's to early 70's or so. Looks like an old cowboy SAA but really a double action with some neat features like recessed and chamfered cylinders so the case rims are fully surrounded. They also have a notch in the cylinder so you can dry fire them sparingly without that much worry. Posted by: whig at May 31, 2026 09:38 PM (E4rtv) 245
Mags are grandfathered. A pistol with >15 round mags is not an assault firearm without one of the other features like a threaded barrel
Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat *********** Agreed. As I read this legislation, they are grandfathered if you are going to the range. NOT as EDC. Posted by: The Grateful - Acta Non Verba at May 31, 2026 09:40 PM (wR7HR) 246
Popped some Ancient Heirloom popcorn and watched Space Master X-7. The title covered about the first five minutes and then the rocket was forgotten. It should have been called The Burping Slime or something.
The special effects were… economical. The scenes of people driving, flying, walking, helped make the 1hr10m runtime seem much longer. The conclusion was disappointing, like they just said, end it here. The slime did not take over the world or cause mass casualties. But Moe Howard in a minor role as the taxi driver turned in a powerful performance and really saved the whole film. Oscar-worthy. And the popcorns were small but tasty, with butter, salt, and curry powder. Geez louise, Weasel, do you watch these things before linking them? Whig's not kidding.
Posted by: Ed L On any old semi auto, usually worthwhile to replace all the springs including magazines. Wolff springs makes the mag springs (and recoil springs for the P7) and they are surprisingly affordable. About 20 bucks per three and less for a single mag spring. gunsprings dot com Great folks to work with and everyone sells their springs too but easiest to go less popular models from the Wolff online store. Posted by: JTB Some of the small H&R 32 Magnum or even the 327 Magnums hold seven cartridges. And you can shoot 32 S&W Long out of them as well as 32 H&R Magnum. The 327 Magnum shoots all of them including the 327 but is a bit much for most people. Given what you mentioned for widest applicability, perhaps a 3 inch barrel and and 38 Special with 148 gr wadcutters or if you can find it, some reduced recoil Hornady self defense ammo or the old 125gr Federal Nyclad Hollow points (now probably gone except from gun shows). The latter is another low recoil self defense load and I think Federal may have a newer version of it in polymer coated lead hollowpoints. JTB and other pipers, my latest purchase was some Cornell & Diehl Belmont Station in bulk from the Cigar Chateau in Wichita, KS. I whiffed a lot of the bulk items they had in jars, and the Belmont appealed -- a strong whiskey aroma in the jar and the pouch. It's faded a bit now; it's more redolent of rum. But it's a codger style blend, not an aromatic like a goopy Captain Black; it's not too strong; and smokes fairly mild.

I agree. The carry and house guns are 357 DA revolvers loaded with 38 special. Mrs. JTB is comfortable and accurate with them. Unfortunately, my 32 magnums are Ruger single actions, not DA. I love 32 Long as a reloadable target round. Posted by: JTB at May 31, 2026 10:00 PM (yTvNw) 257
