Pondering getting another GPS for truck. This Garmin with its fastest route only would increase my mileage by 1/4 to 1/3 every trip. I have 12 miles to go and it wants me to go 20 to supposedly save a couple minutes.

Greetings and good morning, everyone!
Fen, I read that article you posted yesterday from the Christian Post about the dreaded eeeeevil scourge of "Christian Nationalism." Personal opinion: The author couldn't find the point even if he had a Boy Scout showing him the way. He just knew it was bad because "reasons." Anyway! Here I is, sipping coffee, with enough sleep for once despite the efforts of a certain big black cat to wake me early. It's 80 nasty degrees outside, and I have to work out in it. The rain they've been threatening us with all week has not materialized the last two days -- not that it cools things much. The humidity, already vicious, gets even worse during and right after a rain.

In case you hadn't heard: The seller accepted my offer for the house in Indiana. Now I have to arrange for the inspection and a slew of other things that I've never done before. Of course I'm nervous. I haven't moved in over twenty years, for one thing; never bought a house, for another; never lived in that area of the country (though my scouting last Sept. showed me that it, and the people, are nice).
Encouraging, though, is that my new town is at 63 F. right now (6 am their time), high expected of 85, low tonight of 57 (!). I can imagine in spring and fall cracking the windows, turning on the ceiling fan, turning off the A/C, and still being comfortable sleeping at night. Sounds like a dream. . . . If you care to, how would you explain. The term.
Sure. Basically, the phrase is like alt-right, transphobia, homophobia, and islamaphobia. It's a made up word that is meant to sound scary and used as a convenient insult when someone disagrees with a narrative. Posted by: NR Pax at May 28, 2026 06:14 AM (BpO1e) 41

Good job Wolfus. You have every reason to be nervous and at the same time don't worry about it.
Some things that are exciting. Job 1: Get a mortgage. That's always entertaining when you're out of state. Job 2: get a closing date. Job 3: try to get Job 2 timed so you can get keys to the house without having to rent a storage area for your stuff. After that, everything is a grind. Home Depot is your friend when it comes to moving boxes. My all-time favorite is the medium box. Buy a tape gun and don't buy cheap tape. Start packing yesterday. Give notice on your apartment, shut down all your utilities, do the change of address notice with the US mail, pay off your drug dealer, get your stuff into a moving van, get to Indiana, sign 1 million papers and write a bunch of checks, get the keys, move your stuff in, and scream out loud "I escaped!" Plus you might want to set up the utilities before you get there. I highly suggest you let your bank know in advance that you're moving to Indiana and that the flurry of charges you're making there are not fraudulent otherwise they will very likely shut your credit card down at the worst possible moment. The Mansell LEGO collection story keeps getting more wild as more rocks are flipped over.
The couple that previously owned the franchise in Keizer, OR has so many receipts of bad acting on the part of corporate it really isn't funny at how incompetently evil Bricks & Minifigs is. But now I know why the couple was wanting to sell their franchise. TDS. Crystal's husband is an 'independent publisher,' called Not A Pipe, and was wanting to leave the country for fear of Trump. They have a video up on YouTube and on the wall behind them besides a map of Spain is a poster reading "This Machine Kills Fascists." Just insane. AP, I know it will be a grind. That is what I'm dreading.
I don't want to load a moving van myself or drive a rental truck for two days with the cats and towing my car. My plan is to hire a mover -- I have only two rooms of furniture and "stuff" -- put essentials like bathroom and kitchen things and clothes, plus the cats, into the car, and drive up to stay at a hotel for a day or two. Then I can camp out in the house while waiting for the furniture to arrive. $$$, yes, but I don't think I have any other choice. U-Haul won't load a trailer for me and wants a ridiculous price to put a trailer hitch on the car. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 28, 2026 06:43 AM (wzUl9) 57
Also Wolfus, if you're hiring somebody to move your crap, you need to add that to your timeline so everything sequences properly.
A hard part is getting it into your head that all this has to be done on a certain date, no exceptions, and if you get it wrong you're screwed. You can't make enough lists and be sure to put them in due date order so you know precisely when things have to be done and in what order. It's a royal pain in the ass. I also have to change banks. My savings is in a bank that isn't up in IN; my checking bank is not in this new town, but in Indianapolis, an hour away. I figure I can put what I'll need for closing, etc., into a savings account in the checking bank, drive there as needed for a short time, then have both banks wire the rest of my money to a local bank. Does this make sense?

"My plan is to hire a mover."
For these long distance move, that's a good idea. You are probably going to be shocked at how expensive that's going to be but it's a one-time cost and if you can swing it just shut up and pay it. That's what I did when I left Seattle for New Mexico. Also, if you live in a highly urban area like I did, I had to get a permit from the city so I could have a moving pan block the main road to the freeways (The stuff you will discover that you need to do are endless). Also, everything in the apartment that has to be packed and ready to go when the movers show up. There are exactly zero exceptions to this rule. Hence, My suggestion that you start packing yesterday and use Home Depot boxes. Uniform boxes stack nicely in the apartment while you're waiting fto move. A slick move is to have the moving company show up a bit after you close on the house. This means you need to pick very carefully where you're going to throw in the car when you move so you have a place to sit, and cook a bit of food. If the budget allows it, you might want to consider getting rid of your mattress and box spring and buy new ones in Indiana. That way you have a place to sleep.
