----- My once great home state can't get the smaller, single span Key Bridge rebuilt - but sure, let's go ahead and plan for a new Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Much longer and two spans. Great idea! When will a new Chesapeake Bay Bridge arrive? Despite the dreary weather this Memorial Day weekend, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge has been very congested with holiday traffic at times – especially after a crash at the start of the eastbound span Friday morning – leaving some drivers wondering when relief will finally come for the aging bridge.I'm going to start some kind of non-profit which specializes in some obscure thing that has to be done whenever there is a bridge design / build. Need to get me a piece of that sweet state government largess! ----- On to a construction project that is actually making progress Stadium construction begins at White House for UFC Freedom 250 Construction is underway at the White House to build a temporary structure for next month's Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fight. President Donald Trump is hosting the UFC Freedom 250 event on the South Lawn on Sunday, June 14, which will mark Flag Day, the day Congress approved the design of a national flag, and the president's 80th birthday. Tickets are not listed for the 8 p.m. event, which will be available to watch on Paramount+, according to the UFC Freedom 250 website. Crews have already started assembling the semi-circular structure on the lawn just behind the octagon and stands for people to watch. The structure was made in Pennsylvania and shipped to D.C. Dana White, the CEO of the UFC, said he plans to keep the White House the backdrop for every fight. This should be a really kewl event! ----- 1976 was a great year for albums. I saw Gary Wright and Peter Frampton open for The Beach Boys in '76 at Three Rivers Stadium. Wright gave a great opening act but Frampton brought the house down. After his set was finish, most of the concert goers left before the Beach Boys even got started.

The quality of the UFC has really diminished over the years. Most of these matchups turn into sparing sessions and go to the judges.
These bouts should never go to the judges. The fighters should decide who wins or it would be acceptable if the ref or the doctor make a ruling. Offer incentives for KO or TKO. I don't want to see sparing on PPV. Posted by: Rev. Wishbone at May 26, 2026 10:22 PM (D1E+2) 67

Considering the winter we had: multiple single digit temps, a couple ice storms, snow- i did not expect it to survive. I have never had one survive through the winter before. Maybe it was the direct sun. Its supposed to be a Coral Knockout. Had red and yellow blossoms when it first put them out but has settled into a pink similar to the one you linked. Nastiest thorns on any rose bush I have ever grown too. Thinnest, sharpest little bastards. I catch myself running linear projections, and have to remind myself not to borrow trouble from the future, as it'll be here soon enough.
Now for something different: I stand corrected. I said earlier that I thought the subpoena of Hasan Piker was consequential, because he has alpha physiognomy, and it's good strategy to take your enemy's natural leaders out first (as they did with Charlie Kirk). However, I had never really watched him, only seen stills, and Bridget Phetasy has called him out as having "fat kid energy." Women have a natural poseur detector, so I'll take her word for it. What matters is securing the long-term future of consciousness, both on Earth and other heavenly bodies.
We cannot just focus on Earth, because there are irreducible external (eg massive meteor) and internal (eg global nuclear war) cataclysmic risks. The Moon is faster to make self-growing, but is more susceptible to problems on Earth. Mars will take longer to make self-growing, because it is so hard to reach, but is more secure from Earth disasters for that same reason. Both the Moon and Mars should have self-growing civilizations. Making this happen is the prime directive of SpaceX _Musk Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at May 27, 2026 02:57 AM (vvjN/) 303
My parents were in their 90's when they passed. Dad would have lived longer without the death shot. Mom remembered nothing short term once she was about 70, so the rest was just gravy.
I fully intend to go batshit and live out my life waving my cane at people passing by while sitting in my rocker on the front porch, probably for about 20 years, and I will enjoy it thoroughly. I agree with Elon there. I want Moon and Mars (and other) colonies. However, there's one hell of a big problem. Gravity significantly different from 1g earth gravity. And the next one is radiation. To have a colony, you're going to have to make babies. And it doesn't look too good for that in Mars or Moon gravity. Right now, the Chicoms are doing a little "artificial embryo" experiment on their space station, to see how embryos would develop in zero-g. It's not real embryos, but some stem-cell mimic of some kind. NASA and some of the others have done animal embryo experiments with mixed results. This is likely going to be a Big Problem. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley --- Humans are designed to procreate. The radiation and negative effects of less gravity I believe Musk or some competition will come up with solutions. A lot of people tend to just handwave this gravity issue. "We'll adapt". Well, I don't know about that at all. Could we adapt to say a temperature of 200F? No likely. And gravity different from 1g may be about as bad as that. 1g has been baked in the cake for ever biological process on earth. It's there everywhere, ever process had developed on that 1g acceleration. Results of what microgravity does to a fully grown human body are quite a problem. Hell, the immune system doesn't even function properly, the ability to fight infections is greatly reduced. It's everywhere in all sorts of wide ranging processes. We assume there is some tolerance 1g +/- x. The question is just how small is 'x'? It may be very small indeed. Nobody knows this yet by a long shot. I wonder how much energy it would take to create an artificial magnetic shield like the one that the Earth naturally has? The aurora borealis is where the polar nature of magnetism allows more radiation through, and the lack of such displays elsewhere shows how effective the shield is.

>> I wonder how much energy it would take to create an artificial magnetic shield
This has actually been thought about, and believe it or not, while it's still beyond our engineering at this point, it's not that wild. One idea is to place a large magnetic dipole contraption, some superconducting coil at the Sun-Mars L1 point. This would create a magnetotail around Mars and deflect a lot of the radiation. I forget what the numbers are for how strong a field it would have to be, but it's not something laughably impossible. Gravity is a problem for a healthy body. A stationary object like the moon is more of a problem. Von Braun's spinning wheel concept seems very realistic in creating an artificial gravity.

Months ago, my BIL lost (actually abandoned in the dark, after getting his vehicle stuck off-road) his phone, and someone later called me from it. I told him/her to call police but I think they either kept the phone or tossed it & someone *else* found & used it. Cop called the # and someone answered, said they've had that number "like, forever" when cop asked... (liar) when I contacted cops thinking there might be foul play.
This was a couple weeks before hapless dickhead BIL arrived at my doorstep. Posted by: JQ at May 27, 2026 03:35 AM (rdVOm) 322

it is strange to me that John Cornyn would use those words from 2nd Timothy. Paul was under house arrest, and this was the last epistle he wrote before he was executed for his faith. It has nothing to do with a political race. This also about the Christian struggle against evil. Very odd choice. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 27, 2026 03:56 AM (ZeH0U) 333

Yes, its use was out of context. If Mr. Cornyn is a person of the Christian faith there probably is something he could use from Scripture but that wouldn't be it, IMO. It's not as if he was beaten by rods ( as Paul was for the faith) in running against Paxton.
