Wyeth That Gentleman1.jpg

That Gentleman
Andrew Wyeth

Here is a good example of the difference between seeing a painting in person, and seeing it on a phone or computer screen. In person, this is a wonderful and evocative painting, with subtlety and depth. On a screen? It's nice, but not nearly as powerful.

FYI: The Dallas Museum of Art does not allow concealed carry of weapons! Whether that prohibition is legal is a different question...

18 The thing that always gets me about Wyeth is that he was painting a female neighbor for years. Later it came out he was painting her nude and having an affair.

His wife who was still alive offered she had no idea.

"Hey honey I'm going over to paint our hot German neighbor again. Yeah I'm just gonna have her lay in a field or something in front of a barn fully dressed and not at all naked ok? No you can't come. That would ruin my artistic focus!"

46 ‘In person, this is a wonderful and evocative painting, with subtlety and depth. On a screen? It's nice, but not nearly as powerful.’

True with most art. Especially because most of the originals are yuge works that take up most — if not more — of a wall. I didn’t realize how big these paintings really were until I started going to museums. ‘Birth of Venus’ is like 10 feet wide!

Ironically, only the Mona Lisa is underwhelming in person. The most famous painting in all of human history is small, dull, and … crap. I have no idea how it got to be so famous.

That was at the end of his career, proving once again that there is no fool like an old fool. The paintings of the neighbor, called the "Helga" paintings, look like copies or parodies of his earlier, superb paintings of the Kuerner and Olsen families. It was a sad end to the career of a outstanding artist.

It does matter. TX law has fairly strict preemption provisions where firearms are concerned. It's possible that some city-owned venues are exempt. I have no idea if the Dallas art museum is one of them. Since I am no longer* a TX resident, I don't care enough to email TSRA or the AG's office to ask.

112 I saw a thread where someone argued that making someone pay for college because you did is the same as making someone else get molested because you were.

And...the fascinating thing about this line of thought is that it ignores college facilities/labor costs money. There isn't a bill for college because someone is doing something bad to you, there is a bill for college because you are using goods and services from others, and you shouldn't be able to force others to do labor on your behalf.

If we were to come up with a better analogy, making a new college student pay for college after you paid for your own is liking making that new college student cook his dinner instead of being forced to cook both his and your own.

Not that college prices shouldn't come down - prices could easily be halved across the board with no loss in the already questionable quality with a few common sense reforms

So, in 2022, Newsom won the jungle primary for governor with 55% of the vote (second place was GOP Brian Dahle with about 18% of the vote, the general saw Newsom win 59% vs. 41%).

As of the comparable date 4 years ago to yesterday, Democrats had returned 54% of total ballots.

As of yesterday, Democrats have returned...42% of ballots.

I mean...this is CA, land of ballot harvesting now. But...that's a real sign that Democrats real enthused, huh?

158 Whoa! I knew Andrew Wyeth could be subtle but this painting takes it to another level. The comfortable posture, the dim light, the man's head held straight as he looks forward, the hand sitting still in his lap, all point to a relaxed, contemplative atmosphere. (He should be smoking a pipe, says the pipe smoking art critic.) No idea what, if anything, the scissors on the wall represent except, perhaps, he cares for his few belongings.

Part of Wyeth's power is how he draws in the viewers attention and almost forces them to think about the scene, what it could mean to the artist and what it means to the viewer. Looking at his paintings is a process. It is rather literary in the way good writing draws in the reader and appeals to their own experiences. LOTR may be one of the best examples of that.

174 That Gentleman, 1960
Andrew Wyeth

That Gentleman is a celebrated 1960 tempera painting by American realist Andrew Wyeth. It is a poignant, quiet portrait of his longtime neighbor and friend, Tom Clark.Key details about the piece include:

The Subject: Clark was an elderly African American man living in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Wyeth deeply admired him, stating, "His voice is gentle, his wit is keen, and his wisdom enormous."

The Meaning: The unique title comes from Clark's own polite habit of referring to everyday inanimate objects or insects as "that gentleman."

Current Location: The painting is housed at the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) in Texas, where it remains one of their most beloved American works.

When the painting first went on display in Dallas, the public was so enamored with it that visitors left change in a collection box to help the museum buy it. Touched by the gesture, Wyeth donated a rare preparatory study to the museum as a thank-you.
--
That Gentleman was painted using a very old technique called egg tempera. Andrew Wyeth preferred this method because it allowed him to paint with incredible detail and build up rich texture.

Thanks, CBD.

175 The stupidest thing about Boomer hate is that it blames them for rationally responding to incentives.

And ignores the 10X demon of adverse incentives:
Government

If we truly want to fix ... everything--it starts with reducing the size, scope and reach of government at every level.
Nothing will be fixed until we fix that.

Everyone wants someone else's ox gored first.

180 There are things worse than Nazism.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) says he finds Graham Platner's tattoo disqualifying and hopes Maine voters agree with him
Auchincloss: “I find that tattoo and his commentary about it to be personally disqualifying. I hope Maine voters agree with me.

Jake Auchincloss is essentially endorsing Susan Collins in Maine. Absolutely no excuse for a Democrat in the House to back a Republican for Senate in a crucial swing seat.
Auchincloss should be primaried. His primary election is September 1 in a safe, D+11 seat.

181 Wyeth’s use of light is always incredible. The artist “Once, while I was doing a painting of a Negro called Tom Clark-it was called That Gentleman [above|-Halloween came along. I shaved every bit of hair off my head. I was absolutely bald. Then I put alizarin crimson all over my whole head and then took brown ink and rubbed it over very transparently and the red came through. I tipped my eyes with adhesive tape, enlarged my nostrils a little and I actually looked like Tom Clark. I was becoming a part of my painting, really.”

White progressives Platner and Talarico losing in November is going to inflame so many intraparty fights, it's going to be hilarious.

Black caucus is already pissed about Talarico beating Crockett. Moderates are going to be furious with the hard left when Platner loses.

And then the presidential primary starts.

Supporting a Nazi to defeat the Nazis is a very Nazi thing to do.

Her term ends in 2028. The other Alaskan senator, Sullivan, is up this year. I think there is another vote on whether to keep the ridiculous ranked order voting this year as well. If that is gone, then Murcow has a tougher fight for reelection.

192 That's what I like about Democrats.

Hunter Biden has never been responsible for anything Hunter Biden has done.

OF COURSE he as framed by Israel, he was also unfairly demonized by Trump, duped by his business partners into doing all kinds of shady and traitorous stuff, wronged by his ex wife and that stripper, had his money stolen by whores and grifters, and. . . .

Well, the invisible primary anyway starts after November elections where hopefuls and hopeless candidates flock to early primary states and try to raise funds enough to show they are serious contenders instead of grifters.
