In the still waters of this canvas, we find one of nature’s most magnificent spectacles: a proud angler, face glowing with quiet triumph, cradling an absolute monster of a largemouth bass.
Observe the sheer size of this magnificent creature — easily the heavyweight champion of its local waters. With its cavernous mouth and powerful flank, this is no ordinary fish, but a leviathan of the freshwater realm. For this fortunate fisherman, this is the moment every angler dreams of — that rare, almost mythical encounter between man and fish, frozen forever in oil and reverence. Truly, a masterpiece of both angling glory and the painter’s art. Posted by: David Attenborough at May 28, 2026 09:49 AM (440br) 97

A vivid portrait. The man looks intense, probably in all things. Not a fellow hanging around, he probably always has something next on his list to do.
That, or he's dead drunk and barely able to stand, so he's concentrating hard. Posted by: Huck Follywood at May 28, 2026 09:59 AM (YdWlB) 144
I like this for the image and the technique. Hawthorne really captured the determination and pride of the man in FINALLY catching this fish. He's older, has a weathered, outdoors look, and has probably been fishing his whole life. The fish may become dinner or mounted on his wall but the satisfaction of knowing he caught it is clear.
The technique is excellent. Hawthorne uses a realistic style with enough painterly touches to emphasize the moment. The skin tones are perfect for the man's age and time outdoors. (Looks like Norman Rockwell could have painted it.) The man's black clothing is plain and sharp but his bright white shirt, in contrast, shows every crease and fold even to the shadows created by the fabric. The background is dark, drab and doesn't distract from the man or fish. If that is a bass (my first thought), it's a whopper and he should be proud. It is accurately portrayed. A moment the man would want to preserve. A thoroughly enjoyable portrait. Posted by: JTB at May 28, 2026 09:59 AM (yTvNw) 145

I was listening recently to a lady whose friend was in a Canadian hospital for some treatment of some survivable disease. She eventually started secretly recording the doctors on their rounds, because *every single time* a doctor came in the room, they were pushing MAID on this dude. Even when he told them to stop, I won't sign my death warrant, forget about it, and so on, they would still do it every time, and get more and more insistent and wheedling about it.
It's seems their standard-of-care recommends euthanasia as the first line of treatment for every chronic illness at this point. And there is no "death panel," either. I was thinking about the Mitfords just now. What a mess of a family. Every member of it exemplified some British social pathology or another. Braindead, sclerotic aristocracy, communism, nazism, homosexuality, the works.

Charles Webster Hawthorne, "The Fish and the Man," 1925, Dallas Museum of Art. The dignity Hawthorne gives the man is reflected fully and equally in the fish. Both are a bit past the prime of life, vigorous yet a little battered; the rich colors in the man's skin and hands can also be found in the fish. Both have gotten this far doing what they have to do, one being near the top of the food chain, the other at its apex. The man has no satisfaction from catching this fish, no haughtiness, only respect for his adversary. It is arresting in person, the more so the longer you look at it. Artnet: Charles Webster Hawthorne was an American artist known for his lushly painted portraits and landscapes. Some of his most admired works are depictions of the seaside around Provincetown, MA. “It is so hard and long before a student comes to a realization that these [first] few large simple spots in right relations are the most important things in the study of painting,” he once explained. “They are the fundamentals of all painting.” It's a well done painting but I likely wouldn't opt to hang it. However, I'd like to see more works from this artist. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at May 28, 2026 10:57 AM (NFX2v) 267
