Good morning kids. And so it seems as if it's the same old shit vis a vis the situation with Iran. On the one hand we had President Trump and team confident of an imminent resolution and conclusion of hostilities. And yet:

Fresh strikes on southern Iran were launched by U.S. military forces early Tuesday morning targeting Iranian missile sites and vessels attempting to lay anti-shipping mines in the contested Strait of Hormuz.
The targeted strikes were done “to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” but the military was “using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire,” Capt. Tim Hawkins, the spokesman for the U.S. military’s Central Command, said in a statement as reported by AP. Following the strikes, the BBC reports U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a deal was still possible and pointed to talks on Tuesday between Iran’s top negotiator and foreign minister and Qatar’s prime minister.
“We’ll see if we can make progress. I think it’s a lot of talking back and forth going on about specific language in the initial document, so it’ll take a few days,” Rubio told reporters during an official visit to India.

Well, first we have the President insisting that Iran turn over all of it's enriched Uranium, but considering the Mullah du jour along with the IRGC are still in charge and are still the same dark age Armageddon-seeking Shiites they've always been, if they turn over a moldy hunk of Halvah that would be a miracle in and of itself. But the President went on to push for a number of Muslim states to join the Abraham Accords.

Mentioning Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Pakistan, President Trump suggested that it should be “mandatory” for countries involved in the Iran negotiations to endorse the Abraham Accords, a series of U.S.-brokered agreements designed to normalize trade and diplomatic relations between Israel and Arab states.
Writing on Truth Social, he said that “it should be mandatory that all of these Countries, at a minimum, simultaneously sign onto the Abraham Accords.”
According to President Trump, refusal to join the accord would be seen as a sign of “bad intention” on the part of these states. “It should start with the immediate signing by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and everybody else should follow suit. If they don’t, they should not be part of this Deal in that it shows bad intention,” he continued.

I admire, respect and appreciate Donald Trump in the Oval Office, but with all due respect demanding this is either demonstrative of complete obliviousness to the nature of Islam and the last 1500 years of history, or else he made this precondition knowing full well it would be a non-starter so that he can lay the blame off while military operations to topple the regime could continue. Even if any or all of those countries signed onto the accords, it wouldn't be worth the paper they're printed on, as is demonstrated by Israel's relations with Egypt and Jordan that are frosty at best, and useless insofar as the October 7th Gaza blitzkrieg and terror attacks in the West Bank have shown

The ayatollah and leading mullahs live in the holy city of Qom. It’s also the location of the most important madrassas (religious training colleges), and many venerable holy sites.
As Iran’s Islamic headquarters, Qom must be a major target for destruction because it houses the religious leaders who are Iran’s center of gravity. Iran can only be defeated by their destruction at a sufficient level that they can no longer effectively control Iran’s population. Yes, this is bloody, brutal and necessary.
It is also the only way to defeat religious fanatics that use terrorism and deceit as their world conquest tactics of choice.
It’s also the only way we can neutralize Shia Iran’s lying promises.
Unfortunately, Western fantasies of fair play probably prohibit President Trump from doing the necessary killing.

In other words, as I and others have been saying all along, this is, or should be a war against Islam. Islam is at war with the world and unless and until we and the rest of the civilized world recognize this, sooner or later we and the civilized world will be subsumed into a new and permanent dark age. And this is not just the Shiites but the Sunnis as well.

Elsewhere, there's the threat from abroad and just as evil and pernicious a threat from within.

This Memorial Day, as we approach our 250th anniversary of being a nation, feels and looks much different than it did 50 years ago. I remember it well. In the lead-up to the Bicentennial, red, white, and blue was everywhere.
Every brewery and soft drink manufacturer had special edition bicentennial cans. Parades were ubiquitous, with seemingly every third person dressed up as Uncle Sam.
Today? Nothing. For example, Starbucks, which always has a coffee blend or merchandise collection for every holiday occasion ,has ... something called a 'Miffy' collection for the summer. America 250?
Nothing.
Even shortly after coming out of a war which we did not win in 1975, there was far more unity in the nation in 1976 than there is in 2026.

Gee, I wonder why? No, not really!

The newly elected vice president of Massachusetts's top teachers' union is a longtime left-wing activist who has denounced the United States as a "fascist oligarchy," objected to national borders as a "construct of colonizers," and pushed resolutions condemning Israel as "genocidal."

Massachusetts, where, 250 years on, the shot heard round the world is a myth, or worse. If you wonder why multiple assassination attempts can happen and be cheered on, this is why.

I'm afraid those who truly understand the nature of Islam are relegated to the margins of polite society. No "deal" is possible with these people. Trump has met his Achilles Heel. He can always go back to Plan A: wipe them out. But I just don't see it.

Trump just won't do that...maybe it's b/c he feels he was saved by God in his assassination attempt, but he will not wipe out the country or harm the civilians...and everyone knows it...and has planned accordingly...

And thus we're at my door 3 option from what, almost 3 months ago now - just declare we're done and leave after kicking the can somewhat...

B/c having Iran gives its enriched uranium to Russia (the weekend plan) is just like Iran still having it...

All federal money can be moved to another federal campaign committee like a presidential one. That being said, three years is a long time in politics and my guess is Massie's act without office will be about as consequential as MTGs or even Justin Amash if you remember him.

Right now, dealing now, we will only get the appearance of a deal that adheres to our nuclear enrichment goals - new rumor is Iran will give it to China, who obviously would also just give it back in 6 months...Trump wants it destroyed by us or in a Euro facility, but we will probably take face saving over effective and agree to China (who is at least not Russia b/c the optics of Russia who is still at war with Ukraine might be a touch too much).

You can't bat 1000%...and you have to strikeout sometime. Might be the 1st strikeout here...b/c I don't think Trump is going to go back all in with force to change where all parties are...

How many Americans are you willing to sacrifice to 'deal' with 1 billion plus Muslims? How much treasure? Bombing, unless you are truly aiming at genocidal levels of violence such as using nukes to target population centers, is always going to be limited in effect to destroying targets but not regimes. WWII proved that as have other examples.

Absent those options, that leaves negotiations and taking out weaponry to keep the Gulf open and neighbors relatively safe from ballistic missiles and drones. Containment like with the Soviet Union is about the best we can do. Same with Chicoms, Russia, etc. None of Iran's neighbors want them with nukes nor missiles now--so we do our best to keep that denied to Iranians. And to do that, we need allies in that area for bases.

There is NO popular will in the US to fight WWIII to fix the Muslim world. Anyone running on such a platform would lose by large amounts. If you notice, Trump is doing the opposite--he is trying to fix the Western hemisphere from external influence so what goes on across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans does not spill over here. Same with Missile Defense for US.

Losing and then rewinning an office, usually requires humility that you screwed the pooch and upset voters enough to kick you out of office. Most politicians are vainglorious and believe the little people cheated them, unfairly slimed them, etc. and so fail again until it becomes a grift.

Massie already has rejected why he lost blaming it on outsiders, AIPAC, etc. instead of realizing it was his own damn fault. He lost because voters in his district were tired of his shtick of being the only "honest and principled" man in DC. He spent his time preening for the national stage rather than representing his voters and got bounced for it.

No more, no less. All those kudos from randos on the internet were in fact worthless dross if he wanted to keep his seat. Not really. Iran was within weeks of a nuke with 80 percent or so enrichment. And they obviously had missiles being developed to do put warheads on them. That would have risked a nuclear war rather than a conventional one as Israel would be destroyed essentially with three nukes, Saudi Arabia, mebbe a couple in oil fields, Kuwait, one, Bahrain, one, and so on. A crazed Iran with a dozen nukes on missiles could have reshaped the entire Middle East quickly in seconds.

Wars are fought at strategic as well as tactical. Strategically, the US is far stronger in position than we were prior. Israel is in stronger position that they were prior to 10/7. Even the Gulf States took the best that Iran could offer and rode it out with minimal damage. The strategic loser is Iran.

On tactical matters, it varies depending on the issue--Iran is rebuilding missile and drone stores, but they try to mine, bombed, they try to launch missiles, bombed, etc.

AOP is a geologist and pretty much knows the tech literature. So I put this in the category as we don't know. Same as the assessments that it would take decades to bring Kuwait back online after the Gulf War I. It took months.

I think the basis is the idea that salt water can infiltrate wells if not kept pumping continuously--especially old wells which many of the Iranian wells date back decades. Iran's main oil belt is the lowlands adjacent to the Persian Gulf and those are the wells I think are in question.

But, unless one is a petroleum engineer specializing in such, probably not something a layman can make a decent assessment as to what is correct in specific cases.

And that choice is not up to us but the Iranian people. If we were talking about the Soviet Union in the 70's and 80's, why shouldn't we have invaded them to free Eastern Europe for example. It is because even if the war did not go nuclear, we risked massive casualties for an uncertain chance of success. Air wars are easy for us to use to deny enemies certain tools, not so armies that have to fight and hold ground over time to win.

We invaded places like Iraq or Afghanistan and yet those places immediately reverted back to cultural norms just with other guys in charge.

So, we are not going to invade period--not going to happen in our political system. That leaves containment whether by blockades, action when the Iranians try to exercise power over the Gulf, dig out the nuke dust, rebuild missile factories, etc. and it is easiest to do that if we have the united support of the other Gulf states because of logistics necessary for extended naval presence and bases for refueling, rest, and rearming.

New conspiracy theory I ran across recently:

The US has super intelligent AI and the reason the government is making so many changes is both because they are getting this new intel, and they seek to maximize America's position before China/Russia/Europe also get their own equivalent.

This is a bit more realistic then many conspiracy theories, but working with AI myself I don't think its possible.

AI can do a lot of interesting things, but what we are seeing with America's change in focus is because of Trump and his leadership team not AI...

234 AFAIK, at no time in American history has one cohort so thoroughly demonized their parents. Every generation sucks, and there are certainly always subcultures who love to shit on the past.

But it's just an article of faith among my millennial peers that boomers suck and are to blame for every problem.

This is for several reasons, but the basic thing is the same basic thing that all their many, many, many petty bigotries stem from: they are hidebound, rigidly intolerant, and most of one of us are utterly convinced he is morally superior to every human who ever breathed.
