The Morning Rant: The GOPe Must Be Destroyed

punk-monkey.jpg

The Republican primary for United States Senator in Texas is a snapshot of the tension between the entrenched interests of the corporate branch of the Republican Party, and a younger, aggressive, and unabashedly MAGA-adjacent conservative wing. The corporate Republican party (GOPe) has been the only game in town for many years, and their complacency in the face of the progressive onslaught on traditional America has created the existential issues we face today.

John Cornyn is a star of GOPe policies and attitudes, and his bristling antipathy toward President Trump should be enough for the good voters of Texas to boot him to the curb.

The idea of collegiality within the Senate is an antiquated idea that is used as a tool by the Democrat Party to undermine the Republican majority, yet Cornyn stubbornly insists upon a world-view that simply does not exist. The acquisition of power is the only driving force behind Democrat behavior, but Cornyn pretends that the traditions of the Senate are still powerful. Whether he believes it is secondary to his tepid support for the President's policies, and his embrace of some of the talking points of the progressive forces acting against the President.

"Insurrection?" No, Senator Cornyn. It wasn't an insurrection, and nobody was charged with it, so stop parroting your buddies across the aisle. And the filibuster is a marvelous tool to protect Democrat interests and subvert the will of the American people with respect to voting in America, yet you support it?

Begone with you! And let us discard your supporters for good measure. You know, like conservative stalwart Hugh Hewitt! Or the fine, upstanding Senator Thune! Or the United States Chamber of Commerce!

Support for President Trump and his policies should be axiomatic for the Republicans in the United States Senate. That there is a group of senators who are actively antagonistic is an affront to the concept of a political party and the obvious idea that the president is the leader of the party. These effete and out of touch senators have an inflated sense of their own importance, and if the people of Texas slap down Cornyn today, it will be a powerful message to the others.

So...you Texans out there...vote early...vote often!

I think, in Cornyn's case, it's the acquisition of money that's the only driving force. His behavior is almost a clone of McConnell... which isn't surprising.

41 I think one problem with the GOPe is that the leadership has an 1826 mentality about the Senate. That's been a lasting attribute of the Republican party for as long as I've been alive too; the whole comity and reaching out to the Democrats. In my lifetime that's all I can remember about the Republicans whereas the Democrats have gone absolutely batshit crazy left. I'm sure the GOPe sees that.

That they're not willing or able to change their stance on the left even when it's staring them right in the face is telling.

They're comfortable where they are; bagging millions for doing nothing.

Posted by: Cow Demon at May 26, 2026 11:13 AM (T6aVk)

49 my two favorite things about this race:

1) Cornyn is throwing out every nasty, dirty smear he can find; he knows how to fight, he just won't against Democrats.
Just like all GOPe.

2) the GOPe are all out in force pushing the FUD that Paxton will lose to, or only barely beat, Talarico.
Based on polls.
The same polls that have Talarico beating Cornyn as well.
And all that ignores Paxton's crushing state-wide victory after--AFTER--the impeachment they so oft cite as proof of his weakness.

50 I'd encourage all TX males to make sure their male friends, neighbors, family, etc have voted today. Jeff Davis (not THAT Jeff Davis), who ran and became governor of Arkansas--known as the Wild Ass from the Ozarks. Impeached and then acquitted. He then won a US Senate seat.

Impeachment won an undeserved rep from the Nixon years but generally as the Brits found out, it is fairly worthless as a tool for removal of politicians or even high judges. The politics get in the way.

I think Paxton's impeachment process broke the normal mold for how AGs are viewed by electorates.

They're normally just no-names with party affiliation. However, Paxton's journey drove up his name recognition to senator levels which made him capable of actually fighting Cornyn from a similar political height.

And that process proved that TX Republicans...like him.

63 Republicans worry the Cornyn-Paxton fight is tearing their party apart

Politico: ‘The vitriol is going to be real’: Republicans brace for fallout from brutal Texas Senate runoff. If Attorney General Ken Paxton defeats Sen. John Cornyn, it will set up a costly general election marked by GOP infighting.

As recent results have shown, Trump's endorsement will likely push Paxton to the top. The GOP primaries wants yes men for Trump, not actual conservatives or people who respect democracy to our constitution.

This can backfire hard on Trump, though, if Talarico beats Paxton. Because it's the most clear case of MAGA getting rejected in the polls and that to in a state that Republicans haven't lost state-wide in over 30 years.

Texas has been solidly red and Paxton still has a decent shot. If Talarico wins, it will be by a very slim margin. If Paxton wins, Trump gets another loyalist extremist in power, and the US continues its lurch towards Christian nationalist extremism.

=====

Fun factoid:

Before the Civil War, the average length of tenure for a senator was 4 years.

No state popularly elected senators, and state legislatures constantly called senators back and made them not senators anymore. It was stopped because of corruption in the process and generalized movements towards popular elections in a host of states.

I do suspect the old system was better, though.

75 He's getting divorced. I don't care. Trump was a womanizer. I don't care.

Hanging personal relationships with the opposite sex around candidates necks after Bill Clinton is f*cking rich.

The impeachment against Paxton was such an incredible load of shit, it failed immediately. They had ZERO evidence he did what they accused him of. Zero.

I see what Paxton did in his time as AG. He doesn't cater to special interests. He caters to the State of Texas and fights to protect it. He sued the O'Biden administration more than any other AG. He fights. He supports Trump.

I'm good with that.

That infographic floating around is NOT an exit poll on the Galrein Massie race, merely a poll which requires people to answer a text message to an online portal or be directed to a human surveyor (aka interactive). So selection bias is present. Total sample size was about 400-450 which means the cross tabs on age would have something like 50-100 making any statistical inference from that sample size invalid.

Baris got hooked up with that 'interactive' BigPollData outfit and that is one of the reasons his polling has sucked recently. Unproven methodology used more for media comment than any serious analysis.

They discarded a state female governor, Mills, in Maine, and got rid of the minority sassy black female in Crockett. Covid really is a big part of the subsequent insanity. It is like the fear people have of disease gave them a toe hold in people's psyches and the demons climbed in.

Case in Point: BTH. He was a solid commenter. On any issue for years he was as normative a 'ron as you could ask for. Covid comes around and it's like... the fear was bait and it opened him up to the influence.

Psychology is weird. A similar thing happened with Ukraine. It was like candy for people who had massive nostalgia for the cold war.

142 Voted this morning. Paxson should win. The issue Texas has is that maybe 10% to 20% of the population votes in primaries, runoffs, and off year elections at least in my county. The mayor of the closest town to me, (I live in unincorporated area so cannot vote in the city elections), won the runoff vote with a total of 10% of the population of the city voting. I am not sure if its apathy or laziness. I vote in every election as does my wife. For the life of me, we do not understand why people don't vote. It took us a total of 15 minutes (including drive time) to vote this morning.

Duverget's law is pretty much solid. In a first past the post single member district setup, you will have two dominant parties. If you have proportional representation, then you will have 3 or more depending on the cutoff for representation.

People forget that Trump ran briefly for president back in 2000 under the rump Perot party machinery left and figured out third party was a ticket to nowhere. So he did a hostile takeover of the GOP. Flirted with third party again after 2020 but decided instead to try to fix up the old GOP party rather than being out of power like what happened in the UK in 2024 elections to the Tories.

Same thing happened in the 80's with the Progressive Conservative Party. Collapse and new parties came to the fore eventually. Same with the Whig party which spawned the GOP party from its northern wing.

This is probably right. I am trying to think of a good parallel and the closest I can think of when we are talking about the GOP is ... the Republicans who assassinated Caesar. They were people of influence, but they completely ignored the support Caesar got and how he connected to the people. The people did not like the system. Caesar represented a break from that system. The Republicans completely misread this and believed that if Caesar could be eliminated, many would support them and yearn for a restoration of the traditional oligarchy. They truly believed everyone hated Caesar as much as they did, but they were so separated from daily life that they had no concept of what popular opinion even was. They operated though as if their opinion was shared by everyone.

It did not work out so well.

174 Fuck Cornhole.

The 2022 Cornyn-Biden Gun Control Package
In 2022, Cornyn teamed up with President Joe Biden and Senator Chris Murphy to pass S.2938 — the largest federal gun control package in over 30 years.

Cornyn’s bill didn’t just tinker around the edges. It funded and expanded “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation across the country, using $750 million in taxpayer dollars to bankroll laws that allow the government to seize firearms without due process.
It empowered Biden’s ATF to crack down on private gun sales by redefining what it means to be a “gun dealer” — something the National Association for Gun Rights warned Cornyn about repeatedly.
It created a lifetime gun ban for many young Americans through a new federal registration scheme, and it introduced a brand-new gun ban targeting anyone who has had a “bad date,” opening the door to disarmament based on vague, unsubstantiated accusations.

Yet another satisfying vote for Paxton, Middleton, and French. Cornyn can go jump in a lake.

Notwithstanding your GOP loyalism, their *own history* shows it can be done. You're not good at reading yourself, it seems.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice

Your post is misleading. The Whigs destroyed themselves by 1852 which left a vacuum. Same thing happened with the Federalists but that simply left the Democrats in full charge from 1816-1828-1830. The Democrats split over Jackson which is where the Whigs came in by 1832 and challenging Van Buren for the presidency by 1836, winning in 1840.

In a first past the post system, third parties rarely thrive unless one of the major parties implodes which gives the third party the needed candidates, experience and machinery to win.

Same in UK. The Liberals imploded over WWI with the Tories the major beneficiary. That lasted until Labour picked up the scraps left and pushed the Liberals into third party status (and irrelevancy) until just recently. Now the Tories imploded leading to Reform and Restore while the Labour party is imploding leading to Greens and Liberal Democrats.

Paxton reminds me of Tom Delay, who had to resign because of the “serious allegations” against him. Two years later, the investigation is dropped. Oops. Nevermind. But the damage is done.

The most common complaint I hear against Paxton is “but the investigation and impeachment”. I point to the outcome and say, so what.

It comes down to which side is more motivated. The folks who are pro Cornyn or the folks who are anyone but that GOPe squish. The fact that Paxton is actually good is a nice bonus.

Name recognition was the real issue. People know the alternate this time to some degree, it gets harder to define him. He's not some state rep from San Antonio that no one's heard of before and Cornyn can drop some ads on calling him radical. Cornyn dropped tons of ads on Paxton calling him radical and unfit, and it didn't work because...name recognition prevented the attacks from hitting.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison
======
Yep. Texas is a big media state with expensive media markets in Houston and DFW. Ironically, by their stupid attempt to impeach Paxton, GOPe raised his profile as the anti-Bush and anti-Texas establishment candidate far more than ads could do.

And Paxton played it very smart by framing that he would drop out after placing second in the primary if the Senate and Cornyn would just pass the House Save Act sitting in front of them. They didn't so he now had a fresh burst of good pr.

GOPe are bad politicians over the long run because they cannot dislodge the donor tits and the big corporate and oligarch donors always want to keep the influence peddling racket going. Same for their rancid campaign consultants--never positive ads, but always negative hit ads.

It could be 20. It could be all 53.

But all it takes is 4.

And I can come up with 4 no problem who would be opposed to it just out of spite.

I tend to be on Thune's side (the OBBB passage bought a lot of good will with me), so I think it's less he's trying to sabotage it (he should have killed it last year if that was his goal, take it off the board and not an issue for primaries anymore) and more than he literally can't get the votes.

I don't think there's much majority leader can threaten his caucus with individually. Incumbency counts for a whole lot in re-elections, and they all have large individual war chests.

Not really. The Know Nothings did not do well in elections nor did the Free Soilers. It was the Compromise of 1850 that did them in along with Zachary Taylor dying in office and giving us former Democrat Millard Fillmore. The first Whig president similarly died in office and gave us the former Democrat John Tyler.

The collapse of the Southern wing of the Whig party happened after the Compromise of 1850 leaving those to become a rump faction in the Democrat party dominated by the Fire-eaters. Without the Southern wing, the Northern wing no longer had to cater to slave interests and move toward more hostility over slavery and its spread into the territories. The politics of the 1850's is complicated regarding minor parties but yes, I am well familiar with it.

264 Both VPs of the Whig parties were in fact Democrats and thus acted as such when they took over the office which enraged Whig supporters.

Something like if Trump had died or being impeached out of office and Pence became president. I suspect a fate just like the Tories have went through recently would occur.

For third parties to win--they have to have enough skilled politicians and they have to enough concentrated support to gain seats--in the case of Single Member majoritarian districts, geographic concentration. It is far easier if you have a pool of former politicians to draw upon and popular sympathies--it still took a fractured 12 years for the Whigs to be supplanted by the new GOP party which was at its core, the rump Northern Whig party. Not too many Know Nothings or Free Soilers ended up in office and former Whig House member Abraham Lincoln became the first GOP president.

266 257 All it would take is 4 GOP senators opposing it for it to fail. 49 in favor, 51 against.

Refusing to bring it to a vote has - almost - the same effect as voting no. The only difference is that you don't have proof of which assholes would stab you in the back.

Thune is leading the caucus that has to try to come together to pass legislation.

He has a balance of needs, part of which is protecting his own control so he can get things done. (What things? Like the DHS funding they were supposed to do before they went to fake recess, but he had to break because 20 GOPers threw a fucking fit because of the sue and settle with the 1/6ers.)

Exposing his senators to a failed vote while failing to deliver for the most powerful member of his party would hamper his ability to actually lead. If he can't break Mitch's arm to get him to vote (or Tillis or Murk or Curtis or whomever), then the effort might not be worth it from his perspective.

Or, he's just been dragging this process along for nearly 18 months because he's just trying to undermine Trump. I dunno.

277 Republicans will learn the same lesson Whigs did: if you ignore the wishes of most of your voters, they will split off, and push your shit in, once and for all.

You can't just keep ramming it down their throats over and over again - "vote for us so we can keep knuckling under for the Democrats, because if you don't, then who would knuckle under to them?! Some third party or two or three, hahaha" is not an attitude fit for the survival of an opposition Party.

And make no mistake about it - the Democrats are the Party of American government, and have been since Thomas Jefferson.

All other Parties have been opposition Parties, and that will persist into the foreseeable future.

Once they stop fighting tooth and nail- they have to go. It's literally their only reason to exist.

It is a class thing. Southern Republican parties grew from the suburban areas, not from the rural. So the corporate upper class whites ran the parties while the fading allegiances of the white middle and lower classes to teh Democrat party began to erode from the Presidential level first, then representatives in some districts, then senators, governors, etc. So in the South, you have populist candidates fighting with the corporate class GOPe. And that corporate class with its donors keeps moving left on social issues like guns, abortion, government spending, race, etc. The populists would have been Democrats even twenty years ago on the state level but have now moved into direct political competition with the Country Club type GOP. In the South, the Democrat party is now a rump of blacks/awfls in urban and inner suburbs, college towns, and the dwindling population of the rural Black Belt .
