It's a safe bet that if someone has been in the Senate or the House for many years, they have no allegiance to their constituents or the party. They are in it for themselves and their pals and donors, and that can include Democrats. "Barn sour"

Support for President Trump and his policies should be axiomatic for the Republicans in the United States Senate. That there is a group of senators who are actively antagonistic is an affront to the concept of a political party and the obvious idea that the president is the leader of the party. These effete and out of touch senators have an inflated sense of their own importance

I think one problem with the GOPe is that the leadership has an 1826 mentality about the Senate. That's been a lasting attribute of the Republican party for as long as I've been alive too; the whole comity and reaching out to the Democrats. In my lifetime that's all I can remember about the Republicans whereas the Democrats have gone absolutely batshit crazy left. I'm sure the GOPe sees that.
That they're not willing or able to change their stance on the left even when it's staring them right in the face is telling.
They're comfortable where they are; bagging millions for doing nothing.

I might like Cornyn if he were from a left leaning state where a lukewarm moderate is the best we could hope for (as frustrating as she is, Olympia Snowe is probably as far right as the voters in Maine will tolerate) but he's from Texas- you could find better just grabbing a random customer at pretty much any honky tonk or barbeque joint in the state.

13 years in Texas and I never cast a single vote for Cornyn. Something about him rubbed me the wrong way from the start. I'd hit the button for all Republican then scroll back to his race and change my vote to anyone that wasn't him, usually a Libertarian.

Voted this morning. Paxson should win. The issue Texas has is that maybe 10% to 20% of the population votes in primaries, runoffs, and off year elections at least in my county. The mayor of the closest town to me, (I live in unincorporated area so cannot vote in the city elections), won the runoff vote with a total of 10% of the population of the city voting. I am not sure if its apathy or laziness. I vote in every election as does my wife. For the life of me, we do not understand why people don't vote. It took us a total of 15 minutes (including drive time) to vote this morning.

During Wray's testimony before the Senate after J6, Cornyn urged Wray to go as hard on J6 insurrectionists as he could. J6 was such an obvious setup that you either have to be incredibly stupid or on the other side to do something like that.

They were people of influence, but they completely ignored the support Caesar got and how he connected to the people. The people did not like the system. Caesar represented a break from that system. The Republicans completely misread this and believed that if Caesar could be eliminated, many would support them and yearn for a restoration of the traditional oligarchy. Which is why I wasn't a fan of Wesley Hunt's run - at all. He had no chance, and his numbers were even worse than Cornyn's, which puts paid to the notion that anyone else would have beaten Cornyn. Paxton was the proven quantity that would stand up to Bush, Inc. and the die-hard MAGAns know that.
I think that Hunt was put up to the run by the Bushies as a spoiler to save Cornyn past the first stage, but I can be convinced otherwise. I'm not a Texan.

It's about in-state controls of money and paperwork to thin out potential challengers to incumbents.

Thune is leading the caucus that has to try to come together to pass legislation.
He has a balance of needs, part of which is protecting his own control so he can get things done. (What things? Like the DHS funding they were supposed to do before they went to fake recess, but he had to break because 20 GOPers threw a fucking fit because of the sue and settle with the 1/6ers.)
Exposing his senators to a failed vote while failing to deliver for the most powerful member of his party would hamper his ability to actually lead. Thune is leading the caucus that has to try to come together to pass legislation.
He has a balance of needs, part of which is protecting his own control so he can get things done. (What things? Like the DHS funding they were supposed to do before they went to fake recess, but he had to break because 20 GOPers threw a fucking fit because of the sue and settle with the 1/6ers.)
Exposing his senators to a failed vote while failing to deliver for the most powerful member of his party would hamper his ability to actually lead. So the corporate upper class whites ran the parties while the fading allegiances of the white middle and lower classes to teh Democrat party began to erode from the Presidential level first, then representatives in some districts, then senators, governors, etc. So in the South, you have populist candidates fighting with the corporate class GOPe. And that corporate class with its donors keeps moving left on social issues like guns, abortion, government spending, race, etc. The populists would have been Democrats even twenty years ago on the state level but have now moved into direct political competition with the Country Club type GOP. In the South, the Democrat party is now a rump of blacks/awfls in urban and inner suburbs, college towns, and the dwindling population of the rural Black Belt .
