As yours truly ages finely like a fine bottle of wine. I'm so happy to have The Fabulous at my side.

The warning signs have been there for decades. Back in 1983, American author Barbara Ehrenreich wrote a powerful book — The Hearts of Men: American Dreams and the Flight from Commitment — arguing that a male revolt was underway. Since the 1950s, she suggested, men had begun rebelling against the breadwinner ethic, inspired by Playboy culture, the counterculture and a desire for personal freedom. They were rejecting the cultural ideology that had shamed them into tying the knot and becoming a good provider, lest they be seen as immature, irresponsible and less than a real man.

Ehrenreich understood that marriage was the mechanism by which society harnessed male productivity. Remove the shame and the yoke comes off.

Forty years on, the yoke has disappeared. In April 2026, the American male labour force participation rate hit its lowest level since records began in the 1940s, according to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics. One in three American men — roughly 33% — were not working or actively looking for work. The overall male participation rate for men aged 16 and over stood at just 67%, down from 73.5% two decades ago and from 87% in the postwar years when Ehrenreich’s story begins.

The trend is not confined to America. Similar declines — though less dramatic than in the United States — have occurred in the UK, Australia and Canada.

The marriage collapse runs in lockstep with the workforce data. According to US Census Bureau data, married-couple households made up 71% of all US households in 1970; today it’s just 47%. As University of Virginia sociologist Brad Wilcox documents in his 2024 book Get Married, the marriage rate has fallen 65% in the last half century.

I wonder if the dog's name is Murphy? Genius Award Winner.

Shortly after noon on Saturday, officers with the Scottsbluff Police Department responded to Short Stop, located at 2002 Avenue I, after receiving a report that an individual had been shot by a BB gun. While officers were en route, updated information indicated that the incident involved a shotgun.

Upon arrival, officers located a truck with an attached camper. The passenger side door panel of the vehicle had sustained damage consistent with a shotgun blast.

Through the preliminary investigation, officers determined that the owner of the truck had pulled into the convenience store to purchase merchandise. While the passenger of the truck was standing near the front passenger side door, a dog in the back seat moved from one side of the vehicle to the other. During that movement, the dog triggered a shotgun that had a live shell in the chamber, causing the firearm to discharge.

Generally, your spouse had to give you permission to get a divorce. Or put another way, both parties had to agree. And apparently there was some sort of sketchy workaround, called a “Mexican divorce”, maybe they had a different take on it in Mexico.

51 Marriage was decidedly not some sort of patriarchal enslavement plot. It serves a function in society in the hopes of a stable community, among other things. It both intends to prevent females of the species from being left alone and unaided to raise children, and males from being forced to provide for children that aren’t theirs. Notice that both are a huge problem now, and “the state” is now Daddy Provider, meaning the taxpayer is on the hook for all the dysfunction that results.

The family of course is the basic building block of civilization, so it should he no surprise that it has been targeted for destruction by the usual suspects.

72 From last thread:
>> There is a little known reinforced underground concrete bunker at the 39A launch site or thereabouts. In theory the astronauts could have unassed the spacecraft in an emergency via a zip line and taken refuge there. They had survival supplies and such inside.

There were actually two different things. The zip line or slidewire system was added later. The first system installed from the beginning was the so-called "Rubber Room". This was a massive bunker under the pad designed to handle the full explosion of a Saturn V on the pad. Access was via a high speed elevator, into a long slide that led to a padded rubber landing pad which then led to a massive blast door to get inside the bunker.

The slidewire basket system was added later, being setup and tested somewhere around Apollo 9. That became the preferred on, although the rubber room was still available.

79 One in three American men — roughly 33% — were not working or actively looking for work.

A non-trivial amount of that is the fact that if you're white, male, and a US citizen you probably aren't getting any bites on your resume unless you say on it that you're gay. Insty had a thing earlier that 2/3rds of Silicon Valley jobs are held by foreigners, mostly Indian and Chi-Com.

92 A non-trivial amount of that is the fact that if you're white, male, and a US citizen you probably aren't getting any bites on your resume unless you say on it that you're gay. Insty had a thing earlier that 2/3rds of Silicon Valley jobs are held by foreigners, mostly Indian and Chi-Com.

97 SGT Albert Medas USMC KIA

(from my Dad's notebooks)

Sgt. Medas was wounded during the Vegas-Carson-Reno outpost battles at the end of March, 1953. I was also wounded during those actions and was evacuated to Yokuska Naval Hosp. During my recovery I saw Medas being wheeled through my ward. I hollered at him but he gave no response. He had suffered a grave head wound and had stroke-like symptoms. He did not recognize me. The orderly came over and asked if I knew him and I told him yes, he was in my outfit. The next day a nurse came to interview me concerning the Sgt. She told me he had lost his tags and ID during the battle or evacuation and arrived at the hospital listed as "unknown" as he could not identify himself.
Medas was one mean, tough Marine.

He never left the hospital. Medas DOW in September 1953.

125 I dunno if I accept that the root causes of declining birth rates in the U.S. are so clear and simple.

Birth rates heve fallen off a cliff in EVERY First World and Second World (Russia) country, not just here & in Western Europe. I doubt that the Pill and the Playboy Philosophy have much to do with the declining birth rates in Japan (which is having a virtual going-out-of-business sale), or China.

I think economics has been a major factor. A rising standard of living ALWAYS results in a decline in the birth rate. Conversely, birth rates remain extraordinarily high in the worst Third World sewers. The more godawful the place(Republic of the Congo), the higher the birth rate.

Yes... I know that having lots of babies is the only Social Security there is in Ethiopia.

What I'm saying is, I think it's glib and simplistic to blame it all on Hugh Hefner.

LOL! I really dont think anyone under 30 knows how to anymore.

Decoration Day.

169 Tom Servo I usually use Civil War diaries and letters (from people who mostly didn't go beyond the equivalent of today's 6th grade) to illustrate the dumbing down/death of literacy.

Then's the more recent example (50s/60s) of "we used to teach Latin and Greek in high school, now we teach remedial English in college".

Having guest lectured to and graded papers for a public university upper division class (several times), the word "appalled" barely begins to capture things.

171 It made me realize how dumbed down our entire society has become.

Idiocracy.

Saw some click-bait on ivermectin.
Apparently available OTC for real people in a number of states now. Curious which states I did a Google and found most web pages / articles were on medical industry pages.
About a hundred comments on one page, every one was how stupid people are to take that because COVID and everybody knows that red states that didn't hold the lockdown for two years+ had bodies piling up in the streets... oh, and comparing red states to the move Idiocracy.

172 "In case you thought it was about a three day weekend" reminded me of a great film. It is "Taking Chance", starring Kevin Bacon. It is about a military officer who takes on the job of accompanying the body of a soldier back to his home town. It shows details, such as how the soldier's body is handled and cared for, that you wouldn't think about. Very appropriate for this holiday.

173 Whew! I finished yardwork just as daylight dimmed. Then, heard thunder rumbling in the distance.. a breeze and sprinkle of rain.. couple of loud booms and it's over now. Still warm outside.

Posted by: LRob in OK at May 25, 2026 11:17 PM (Jr+re)

I think technically it is, with impossible hoops to be jumped through. Canada's "constitution" was unilaterally imposed by Pierre Trudeau as an Act of Parliament, so as far as I am concerned, it is invalid on its face.

177 Hi folks. For those interested, Robert the Cat(TM) is still kind of the same, though he is starting to get used to the idea that "me without a shirt" is not the nauseating surface he thought it was. Still hurts, mind you.

Posted by: BeckoningChasm at May 25, 2026 11:16 PM (CHHv1)
No offense or judgment about your shirtlessness. But does Robert like fleecy blankets? Our cat likes making biscuits on my lap. I make her do it through a blanket. She ain't going to town on my bare leg. Ow and no.

178 Also, all these Civil War letters were written in longhand, no type-delete possible.

Most of us have lost the skill, or perhaps never had, of holding a fully expressed thought in our head before writing it down.

Wrong. I had an excellent English teacher in junior and senior high and a mom who taught me as well. My letters and now my emails are epic! My kids think I use too many words with too many syllables!

187 I'm happily married, but I find myself fascinated by all the articles and videos about the sad state of modern dating and marriage. Hoe_math is probably my favorite YouTube channel on the subject. Most men seem to have adopted the Joshua strategy (as in the WOPR computer in "Wargames") - the only way to win is not to play. I didn't get married until my mid-40s and was prepared to die single, but I found a unicorn and locked her down pronto.

I like his stuff, especially when he explains that it's all the fault of Democrats, but he's also at least "and it's the fault of the Joooz that we have Democrats" adjacent. That's mostly in his social media posts though, I haven't seen it in his videos.
