12 STNG was beyond stupid.

I watched it at the time and even though they had way more budget and better FX then ToS because they never built a reality that makes any sense.

For example, Picard, as a Captain of a ship owns a large vineyard in France. Well...maybe its family money? But...they've gone socialist. And he's away for most of his life...but he still controls some of the most valuable farmland on earth?

And who is maintaining the land? Slaves? Because its socialism right? So if he's gone and they are there its not his...

HF, I've never been to TH either, just Evansville about 90 min. farther south. But I liked what I saw there, and what I see on Gorgle Street view in TH. It has a good 60K people, two Walmarts, a Lowe's, a Planet Fitness, and an Anytime Fitness. If it has those chains, it probably has a lot of other national names.

Beignets? Pffft. I prefer sopaipillas from New Mexico (which, aside from the white puffy sugar, are the same thing). I'm tired to my bones of Da Swamp, and if I suddenly *require* a beignet, there are kits to make them at home.

16 We need to introduce Revenge of the Nerds to young leftists.

Because when it came out it had a minor leftwing leaning attitude - jocks are bad, nerds and outcasts are good.

Back then movies didn't hit you over the head with politics first and then worry about a plot second like now.

But wow is that movie antipolitically correct by modern standards

It's amazing. In Sept. '97 I drove down from Denver to Taos and was astonished at how New Mexico really begins at the Arkansas River, ca. U.S. 50. South of that line the landscape looks just like NM does south of the CO border.

I visited a little CO town down there, San Luis, which boasts of being the oldest in CO (1857) and has a mission on a hill nearby with a set of bronze sculptures of the Stations of the Cross along the trail winding up the hill.

68 Went to load the wife's car this morning at 0600 with our contribution of food for the Memorial day motorcycle run at the VFW. Dead battery with no warning. Took the stuff and put it in my truck and went to walmart to find a battery. Commenced to have a The Good, The Bad and The Ugly morning.

The Good: Walmart actually had a battery that matched the size. The auto parts places don't open until 0800 because it's a holiday so that's a win. The battery fit and actually had a charge.

The Bad: The dead battery in the car had about 18 different connections and wires hanging off of it. I should have taken a picture of the layout before I started but I didn't so I had to piece everything back together and figure it out on the fly.

The Ugly: The dead battery was tucked away in a corner with absolutely no way to pick it up out of the battery tray. I had to wedge it up and slide tools under it to actually be able to get a grip on it to pull it out of the car. The replacement battery had a convenient handle on top so you could pick it up. No idea why all car batteries don't have that handle.

It worked and everything is fine now.

71 147 Rush isn't Rush without Neil Peart. It just...isn't. He wasn't just the best drummer of the latter half of the 20th century, he was the songwriter.

It's like trying to have The Beatles without John Lennon. At least Led Zep had the decency to stop without Bohham.

Whatever this is, it should not be wearing the Rush name.

From.last thread:

I blame this sort of thing on The Who, who arguably weren't The Who anymore after Moon, and certainly after Entwhilsle. I can see it if you are using the name of the band to sell tickets if you are a band where the members aren't famous, and there's nothing wrong with doing all the songs of the band, but anyone who would buy tickets knows the members. Townsend and Daltrey or Geddy and Alex would sell just the same. McCartney and Starr don't have to claim to be The Beatles either

It was in his family for generations. Picard joins starfleet, leaves the family business, father takes a dirt nap, and his older brother is left to pick up the slack and run the place. This was all shown in the 4th season, episode 2 "Family". More interesting is in the movie "Generations" Picard finds out his brother and nephew die in some fire at the vineyard and who knows who runs it at that point, maybe his brother's wife.

84 Heavy Metal is a movie carried hard by its soundtrack and boobs. For Westerners, this was the first big splashy exposure to adult animation. (Ralph Bakshi was too batshit to really count, though Fritz the Cat did...exist).

So it was a big deal, culturally. It was a regular midnight movie at my college theater, that's where I first saw it with friends.

I like it. Some segments are better than other, I don't like the stoner aliens, but Hanover Fist remains great, so is 'Den of Earth' the Richard Corben story is really faithful to his art and plot.

Tastes vary but I dig it.

Stewart said that for the first few months of the show, he didn't even really unpack. He was sure he'd be fired or the show would fail.

They were wise this time around to cast some older actors though, esp. in his case. The commander of a flagship vessel, whether in our wet navy or a spacegoing one, needs to have some years of experience behind him. Kirk was kind of young for that -- more like the commander of a destroyer -- but then I got the impression Starfleet was kind of new-ish itself then.

I've had it done two or three times. Including during the Sniffle Scare. The driver showed up wearing a face diaper. We got my car started and moved it into shade, and I brought him some water in the 95-degree heat while he worked. I said, "You can take that thing off," and he regretfully shook his head. "Company rules."

Modern cars, at least my Buicks, don't warn you when the battery is getting ready to fail. No hard starts or anything. You walk out one day, push the button, and "click click click."

But you have to have the original to replicate.

So I assume Star-Trek-era wineries, breweries, and distilleries just discard 99.9999% of their product. The 0.0001% that's truly new and amazing goes in the replicator library.
