  • Google search is dead, says... Google. (Tech Crunch)

Professor Plum in the library with a lead pipe?

    Or just Google being Google.

Anyway, the plan is, now that Google has killed its premier product through years of malign neglect, to force you into an AI "experience" any time you want to look something up.

One small problem: I already have Grok for that, and it doesn't try to sell me stuff I don't want, and most of the time it doesn't like to me either.

The secondary is problem is that behind the scenes Grok is using search engines like Google to pull related data together to answer your query. You can even watch it doing that - if you have SuperGrok (my company pays for it because it saves a lot of time we used to spend digging through Stack Overflow) you can watch it spin up three different agents that perform different searches and argue about the correct answer - and oftentimes even get it right.

So the question is, if the underlying search engines go away, what happens to the AI experience? Does it go the way of the nudged quanta in the single data drawer among the galaxy of indexes of indexes?

18 Oh! Good news! Oregon's gas tax/registration fee increase was shot down, under 2/3 reporting but over 4/5 a resounding No. The story is too complicated for me to follow, but getting it passed by the state legislature was the signature achievement of Gov. Tina Kotek (D), and she pulled out every dirty trick in the book to try to keep canvassers from getting it put in front of the voters as a ballot referendum. She is such a sneaky-sneaky, she somehow got away with changing a Nov. referendum against the bill into a May ballot measure for it, but that plainly didn't help.

This means that Kotek is now a big fat loser going into a Nov. rematch against state senator Christine Drazan (R), who won the nomination for Gov. with only a plurality of primary votes (Oregon doesn't do runoffs for party nominees). This does make the governor contest more competitive, but Motor Voter and the Magic Mail-Ins (I saw them open for X at Y in Z) create a nigh-insurmountable Margin Of Fraud.

47 The tail end of Von Ryan's Express with Sinatra and Trevor Howard is on Movies! You know, I have never seen the film all the way through. I first read and loved the novel when I was in high school -- not assigned reading, I was never so lucky; on my own -- and have reread it a couple of times since, including during the dark days of the Sniffle Scare. I understand the ending of the film is quite a bit different from that of the novel.

Dennis Franz's character Buntz was introduced late in the show's run. He at first seemed to be a a hustler and an unreliable cop, but proved otherwise in an episode where he and another, younger cop were held hostage by a psycho. Buntz psychologically waterboards the psycho and saves himself (and, I think, the other cop). He seems to be fine, to be taking the whole thing in his stride. Then we see him in the bathroom, throwing up. Very powerful stuff.

I watched most of The Detective from '68 with Sinatra and Lee Remick last night. Another example of a movie being better than the book, as well as different. A lot of the novel's bones are there, but screenwriter Abby Mann clothed them differently and much more interestingly. Sinatra was very good.

From wiki:

Ocasek was found dead on September 15, 2019, by his estranged wife, Paulina Porizkova, at his New York City townhouse, which they still shared following their separation in 2017.

Porizkova and Ocasek were still in the process of their divorce at the time of his death, but he had disinherited her in a new will, alleging that before his recent surgery she had abandoned him. This required a probate court judge rule on the veracity of the abandonment claims before the remaining estate could be divided. He also disinherited two of his six sons.

In 2021, the dispute between Ocasek's estate and Porizkova was settled; Porizkova said she was granted a third of his estate. While Porizkova would not tell Vanity Fair the precise terms of the settlement, she denied reports that Ocasek was "only worth $5 million" at the time of his death.

79 Ah, The Cars. Ric Ocasek was telling us ugly people that there was hope for us too.

80 There has to be some kind of deep-deep-state CIA domestic op to discredit the Democratic party and dissolve their cultural relevance. Either direct embeds, or the kind of mind control hypno-suggestion op that gets dudes like Alex Jones frisky.

They can't possibly be this stupid spontaneously.

85 After long and intense scrutiny of human behavior, I have come to the conclusion that people are mostly held back by good culture from being stupid, and it only takes the removal of inhibition for them to race wildly into utter psychotic idiocy of their own accord.

86 I just listened to The Cars "Let's Go" on a YouTube playlist of mine an hour ago.

I kinda liked The Cars in the 80s as a kid, but over the last decade I've grown to appreciate their music a lot more than way back when.

Really good band, and their stuff has only gotten better for me over the years.
