—— Ha! Ironically from my reading of the wartime spook stuff, German (or Swiss maybe) miniatures were preferred or practical for that stuff. As might be envisioned, they were hard to get for allies. One thing they came up too, was the “Microdot”or miniature documents contained in the sentence at the end of a period in an otherwise ordinary letter or document. While it was totally illegal nobody cared too much, and the FBI and other orgs opened a lot of mail. Disappearing ink, ciphers, all sorts of stuff. One thing that put the US at a disadvantage, considerable intelligence could be gleaned by going to any decent sized library, and subscribing to major magazines. “Aviation Leak” it was termed. Skip, is the tailgate electric open or manual? There are you tube videos that show you how to get into the tailgate from the inside panel to use an emergency manual override of the electric button to open the gate. We had to do that once on a tailgate that malfunctioned and wouldn’t open with the button on the gate nor the key fob.

My grandfather was in the Army Air Service after WWI (he didn't finish flight school until after the armistice), and his assignment was to monitor Germany's compliance with the Treaty of Versailles, taking lots of photos to document what they were doing. I have the camera he used for that, and every camera he ever owned since. The best one is the Realist, a 3-D camera. They still make the film for that.

That is an, absolutely wonderful, display piece. I'd center it on a shelf surrounded by old family photos.
My 29 year old eyes suggest that is a 1947 or 48 Polaroid Land Camera Model 95. You're not going to use it again unless you hire someone to alter it's guts and make it more conduscent to modern film. That one has no replacement film options. Were it me, I'd find a nice antique table that catches the eye on its own, center the camera in the middle and surround it with very old photos of relatives including its original owner. As much as I know that I was a much better photographer with film and my Canon AE-1 and a span of five lenses from macro through "regular" to telephoto. when the time came to say, "Adios!" to them, I did so with only the slightest twinge of regret. My photos that I liked best, because I had to work at them, were of people, particularly our scouts, engaged in their activities. Vistas, landscapes, and the like I conceded to others. A camera on a smart phone is vood enough for me and mine at this stage. Have I surrendered something? Sure. But I have other areas where I wish to be creative, too. So it goes. Start searching for a collector that wants that camera (might take 3 years of on and off searching) and unload it to said collector for a pretty penny, otherwise it will be worthless.
For the purpose of memories, open that thing up, set it on a dark mat, and take multiple digital pictures of it from every angle, then your wife can look at those when she wants to. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at May 24, 2026 03:40 PM (O7YUW) 96

I have one of these in my collection but haven't modded it yet. I still like to shoot film as a hobby, mostly because my Dad left me a decent Olympus with a full load of lenses. DanMa'am hung onto some film from a projector from the mid 50s to early 60s, family films made by her dad. Sent them of to those guys that do old films. Got three CDs worth of excellent color films ranging from her parents first house in Denver (under construction and finished), many days on the beach in La Jolla and a lot of her as a baby to about 5 years old with her little brother. And the cars of the era.

> Kodachrome was a specialized process.
Posted by: Common Tater at May 24, 2026 03:20 PM (sEgd Yep. Processes C-41 and E-6 (color negative and Ektachrome color slides respectively) could be done at a local lab or even at home with a bit of care. Process K-14 (Kodachrome color slides) was...not easy to process. You had to have an actual analytic chemist on staff if you wanted to get good results. Part of it was that Kodachrome was actually dyed during development, while the others had the dyes already in their specific layers of the film. However, this meant that you could use super-mondo-skookum dyes, making for unmatched image quality and image stability. Ektachrome slides from the 70s mostly look like ass. Properly stored Kodachrome still looks grerat. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at May 24, 2026 03:46 PM (IG3/x) 110

Was going to fix my Krups coffee grinder (estimated age, 25 years+). Opened it up, only problem, as I thought, was some of the coating on the power wire had cracked, leading to a semi-break in the wire. Seems fairly easy to re-wire it using existing cord. Then I thought - well the cord is all old, it will likely crack again (just inside the housing, not where you can touch it).
So getting out the large pry bar to open up my wallet and spend the $25 for a new one. Utter defeat. Hoping the krauts' QC on small appliances remains near perfect. Posted by: rhomboid at May 24, 2026 03:56 PM (U/Byj) 131

It goes in a curio cabinet. Out of space in your curio cabinet? You buy another curio cabinet. At least this is the "solution" I've found for this sort of problem. For various definitions of the word "solution".
Basically, you're making a museum of you. Once you have enough curio cabinets you get tour guides, a concession stand, and headphones with oral history by voice actors to hand visitors, that sort of thing. I'm hoping to one day be able to have an amusement park section with a jungle themed logjam ride for weary visitors that need to cool off. Posted by: banana Dream at May 24, 2026 04:03 PM (3uBP9) 142
Top pic looks very similar to the Kodak Brownie that I took on my first class trip. Went to the Crystal Caverns in PA. On the bus ride out, we passed the Union water sphere just off the Garden State Parkway. At the time it was billed as the world's largest water sphere, so by way of testing the camera and my Ansel Adams chops, I snapped a pic from the back of the bus. Saved the rest of the film for the amazing sights from the caverns.
Got the film back from the developer, and the water sphere shot was the only one that printed. Perfectly framed, and world's tallest at the time though, so I got that going for me... Posted by: Joe Kidd at May 24, 2026 04:03 PM (nbLIj) 143
For folks with old film cameras (raises my hand), film is still made for 35mm, 120 rolls for twin lens reflex, and 4x5 inch sheet film for old press cameras. The prices make me gasp when I think about what I paid thirty years ago but it is available. If I got back into film photography again I would revive my darkroom gear as well. Most film developing and printing is simple and procedural, not rocket science. I've seen some photos my grandfather took of my aunt in a high chair during WW I. He developed the film in their bath tub and printed with daylight exposure.
