Ummm...that's how Eratosthenes calculated the Earth's diameter, as far back as 240BC. heheard that there was a well in egypt where the sun hit to bottom (i.e. no shadows) on a certain day if the year. Compared that to a stick stuck in the ground a couple hundred miles away on the same day, and using proto-trigonmetery, very accurately calcualtred the Earth's circumference and diameter. I can see Venus next the thin Moon nicely out there, but Jupiter isn't visible yet. And just I was looking, a plane was headed over to GSP looked like and passed right close by. I got to see the sun shining off the bottom of the plane, making a nice glint. This was after sunset here. That's one of the many "earth is round" observations, of course. Hawaii as a duty station has some advantages. Lived on base, no rent. Ate in mess hall if necessary, no grocery bill. It’s kinda spendy otherwise. Spectacular scenery abounds, no doubt. Bring lots of money, don’t get too attached to it though.
Posted by: Common Tater C. 1995 some of it was actually quite economical. Go to local travel agency in person and get books of inter-island airlines ticket vouchers for $15-$20 each way. Book hotel at baggage claim (unused time shares for about $40 a night). Buying fresh veggies by the pound did shock me, but they have high transport cost. Two Whoppers for $2 still a thing. I used to joke about the Whoper being a salad Burger. In Hawaii you'd get the same bun and patty but just a sorry ass tomato slice that could be from a cherry tomato, a piece of brownish lettuce, and a couple pieces of onion. But the local One Choi / Two Choi plate lunches were a good value. And the really out of the way local plate lunch places had Hawaiian sized servings. So Pizarro found an island with lots of fresh water. And no natives had settled it!! ... because it was an island full of Welcome to offshore South America, in short. These snakes tend to be extra venomous on account if the poison/venom works fast, the victims (like birds) can't leave the island. Ask a Brazilian. He named it the Gorgon Island. Keep looking every evening just after sunset and see Venus get higher and higher for a conjunction with Jupiter on Jun 8 - 9th. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) Those two have a conjunction on a pretty regular basis, yes? Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) Imprison! Imprison! But the big conjunction we get for our 250th birthday, early July 4th is Mars and Uranus. Mars will get within 6.5 arcminutes of Uranus, almost plugging it dead center. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 18, 2026 09:32 PM (w6EFb) 164
158 This blockade won't take years. Iran's economy is based on oil and they are losing billions. Inflation is chasing Zimbabwe levels. I bet they are getting some strongly worded letters from China because China's economy relies on cheap oil from Venezuela, oops, and Iran, oops.
None of us know all the backstage conversations that are happening but this is way bigger than just Venezuela and Iran. Trump is shifting the balance of global power. I doubt everything will go perfect but this is exactly what I voted for. No more can kicking, ass kicking. Posted by: JackStraw at May 18, 2026 09:29 PM (viF8m) ======= $5 says China has already written them off completely. They didn't want to. They also didn't want to acknowledge the change in regime that was Venezuela. But, like the one-child policy, they have realized the reality, if too late to do anything about it. Now the anti Trump protesters are showing up at this San Diego LE press conference. Now a lecture about Islamophobia from the prick speaking now. (facepalm)

Posted by: JackStraw at May 18, 2026 09:29 PM (viF8m) It is rerouting oil that used to go through Hormuz straits. By the time things mellow out, Iran will be the only ones trying to ship out that way, everyone else will have pipelines. Posted by: Kindltot at May 18, 2026 09:33 PM (rbvCR) 167

Oh, and in FAR more important news:
It's been leaked that Richard Ayoade (Moss from The IT Crowd) is on Series 22 of Taskmaster. Studio is filming right about now. It should release in Autumn. I'm excite. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, discovering British horror with Hammer Films at May 18, 2026 09:36 PM (xBVv0) 169
The decade of lectures from people who know better how to proceed than Trump, a guy who stood up from out of nowhere to save our country from the commie rats in both parties, and to actually give our side a voice, and then did so against all odds, is getting to be incalculable.
He either has a good reason or he's owned by some bad people or he's gone mentally retarded. I don't think it's the last two. I'm always willing to wait and see. Posted by: ... at May 18, 2026 09:36 PM (vE0+H) Processing 0.01, elapsed 0.02 seconds. |
