Wes Moore is asshoe

Wes Moore’s Afghanistan story starts to unravel

In a commencement speech at Valley Forge Military Academy on May 9, Gov. Wes Moore told graduates the academy had taught them “something that I wish more people in this society understood — that we will not lie, cheat, nor steal, nor tolerate those that do.”
For two decades, Moore’s own accounts of his Army service and Afghanistan deployment have tested whether he lives by that standard.

In an April 2014 interview with the USO’s magazine”On Patrol,” Moore was asked about his duties in Afghanistan. “I was an infantry officer, military police officer and then became special ops when I joined the 82nd Airborne Division,” Moore said.
Based on Army records, his answer was not true.
Those records show Moore was not an infantry officer, was not qualified in any special operations field and did not deploy to Afghanistan to perform either role.

Why did Tyrannosaurus rex have such short arms?

One T. rex mystery has to do with this giant predator’s relatively tiny arms. Why would it have arms so short that it couldn’t even reach its own mouth? How did it use them?

Some scientists have recently hypothesized that T. rex‘s short arms were an adaptation to competition with other carnivores. If multiple predators were feeding on a carcass, one could get hurt by accidental bites or even intentional warning bites for getting too close. Shorter arms would be less likely to get chomped. Similar things occur today with territorial carnivores, like Komodo dragons.

Another possibility is that the arms served little or no purpose at all, so over time, they became vestigial. That’s the scientific term for body parts that don’t have clear purposes anymore, but are still passed down through evolution.

The Sunny (and Slightly Scandalous) Rise of the Sundress

Long before morons debated what counts as a “sundress,” the idea was simple: something light, sleeveless, and waiting to welcome the gloriously warm weather. The term “sundress” popped up in the early 1940s, but the garment we know today was born from wartime rationing and postwar relief. Women were done with restrictive corsets and heavy fabrics. They wanted clothes that breathed and looked cute doing it.

The real birth happened mid-1940s, thanks to American sportswear pioneers. Claire McCardell (often called the mother of American sportswear) and Carolyn Schnurer designed easy, unfussy dresses with soft silhouettes, lightweight cotton, racerback straps, and room to actually move. No restrictive foundations, no Paris-level drama, just practical, flattering pieces for active postwar women.

Claire McCardell in one of her signature easy pieces, and period patterns showing the breezy direction fashion was heading.

These were the anti-New Look dresses. Dior’s structured extravagance was for the runways; McCardell and Schnurer were dressing real American women who wanted to hop in a convertible or chase kids at the beach.

By the 1950s, the sundress was everywhere. Lightweight cottons, ginghams, and playful prints ruled the day. Women wore them to picnics, beach days, and backyard barbecues. They were flattering on most figures, easy to sew at home, and perfect for the explosion of leisure time and family travel.

1950s real-life and catalog sundresses

Then came the 1960s and the queen of the sundress, Lilly Pulitzer. The story is pure gold: A Palm Beach socialite running a juice stand in the 1960s, she asked her dressmaker for a shift dress that would hide the inevitable orange and pink stains. The result? Bright, bold, sleeveless wonders in wild florals and patterns. Jackie Kennedy (a friend) helped popularize them, and suddenly every woman wanted that carefree, colorful vibe. Lilly’s dresses were double-lined so you could skip underwear. Scandalous! And liberating.

By the late 1960s, the sundress had cemented itself as the ultimate summer uniform: short A-lines, wild florals, worn with sandals, cat-eye sunglasses, and smiles. It captured postwar optimism—more freedom, more fun, and clothes that finally worked with women instead of against them.
The sundress is still winning today. You will find them in breezy linen and cotton, in both minimalist neutrals and bold patterns. The versatility make them work for everything from beach days to city sightseeing to backyard barbecues

Current Lilly Pulitzer and Farm Rio

The sundress didn’t chase trends; it survived them. From wartime necessity to Palm Beach icon, it remains one of the smartest, most packable, and most flattering pieces in any vacation wardrobe. It is timeless and cheerful after all these decades.

26 Evening, Doof, and ONT Horde! In Moriarty, NM tonight. Had a very flukey thing happen with the convertible today. Filled up in Tucumcari, drove out of the service station, and bumped hard over a hidden curb. No evident damage, and we carried on to the next town, where we visited a car museum. Leaving, the car would not start; engine didn't even try to crank. Evidently, going over that curb did something to the neutral safety switch. Jumped the solenoid with my pocket knife, car started. We drove to Santa Fe (the original 1926 alignment of 66). Santa Fe was no fun at all. Nasty place. Really had no interest in viewing old Spanish churches, so we moved on south to Moriarty, to see a great old car museum. (continued)

Yeesh. They still don’t get it. Your signature product is Pizza. Never forget that. The “nostalgic feel” is all bullshit if your product sucks.

Your product in fact has taken a huge nosedive in recent decades. Maybe it was never great pizza. But it wasn’t bad. I don’t know what you did to it, but the crust in particular isn’t the same.

Why don’t you work on your core competencies before worrying about the curtains and all that shit?

34 iirc, Fords have, or had, a safety switch of some sort in a rear wheel which would shut down the fuel pump in the event of an impact or collision. Apparently you could disable a Ford by giving the inside of one of the rear wheels a hard smack with a hammer.

43 /2 While at the museum, I figured, instead of popping the hood and jumping the solenoid each time I needed to start the car, I should run a clip lead from the solenoid through the firewall, and I could jab the end of it into the cigar lighter socket to crank the engine. So I am trying to feed the clip lead through the firewall, and I get a big fat spark! Upon further investigation, I found a totally bare #12 wire going through the hole in the firewall, and that was a HOT wire! It was like one RCH from shorting out to the steel firewall. The car could have burned down at any time. I clipped the wire, ran my jumper, and the car starts fine that way. Turns out that hot wire is power feed to the convertible top motor. I will splice it with insulated wire tomorrow. My best guess? Mice chewed the insulation. But if I hadn't hit that bump, and knocked out the neutral safety switch, I might never have found that bare wire. Until too late...

Hmmm...he did all three? Granted, I was in the AF, where you can have a Primary AFSC, a Duty AFSC and other different AFSCs. (Mine was always the same. I only ever had one AFSC in the AF.) But pray tell (I'll need you soldiers to confirm this for me) how do you get to be all three? Especially as an officer. I can see being infantry and then getting your Ranger tab or Airborne tab (maybe) but also being an officer with the MPs? Off I go to read the article.

Remember when they had the epidemic about 15(?) years ago. The nightmare would be that it got loose in a big city, where exposure would be very difficult to control and a single person could infect hundreds before dying. It actually did make it to a city, but with heroic efforts, and many trained locals, they were finally able to contain it. One of the big breakthroughs was in getting the locals to abjure their custom of handling the dead.

We have strict outdoor water restrictions here. No gardens, no landscaping and we're supposed to limit indoor water usage.

It interesting some yards here are very green, while most of the lawns are dead.

And airborne is just an additional qualification. Of course, airborne isn't really "special operations" either. (You have to be "airborne" to be a Ranger, for example, but being "airborne" doesn't mean you're a ranger.)

Heck, I had 4 different sorts of jobs (as an officer) in the AF, and only 2 of them related directly to each other.

MP, Infantry, and Special Forces are three separate distinct branches for Army officers. Generally they start and end their careers in the same branch.

Maybe I missed it but it sounds like Mr. Moore may have been in the Reserves. (And to have a superior do that for you is not far out of the realm either. Even though my relationships with FGOs in those long ago days were always professional, we'd talk about what we wanted to do in the AF and after, so I can see Mr. Moore talking to his buddy the LTC about a political career and the LTC helping him out. Not that such a thing is right but I can see that happening.)

I had it happen this past week, and you'll love this story. A guy brings his bike in, says when he starts hitting good RPMs on the highway his crank case breather catch canister fills up with oil almost immediately. The 93-up engines breath out through a port in each head and the hose from each port is run into the airbox. Its not supposed to see oil, just vapor. There are filters in each rocker box to help separate the vapor and oil, when they get saturated/old they will pass a little oil. I'm looking at it, and I say no, there is more to this story, there is an added twist here, I need to go deeper. I do a leak down test and I'm getting air escaping the breathers. Ok, he got a bit of blow by and is pressurizing the crankcase. I still sensed there was more, because it was just too much oil. I pulled the rocker boxes, found valve seal fragments in the valve springs. I told the shop owner I'm going into the cam chest where the oil returns. It was clean. I said I'm going farther and went into the pump. The oil pump return passages were packed full of blue viton valve seal rubber. Ooops.

188 My Honda eu2000i has started burning oil. Started around 1000 hours or so. I did everything right, good oil, oil changes, filter cleanings, spark arrestor cleaning, jetted properly for elevation, the works. Compression, and power, is good. I think it might be a valve guide, not sure.

Pisses me off, it cost me a small fortune back in the day. Fouls plug fairly quickly. Tried loading it up hard for a while, thinking maybe the cylinder glazed over.

Well this is what I mean about the harley gods. This could have been easily dismissed as old breather filters, but there was a subtle twist in the puzzle. They were saying go deeper, and I listened and found shit that had nothing to do with the original problem. Most owners would have ignored the catch can to start with, but this dude had the sense to have it checked out.

Usually if it's a guide or guide seal you'll see oil in the intake manifold, or whatever the carb is bolted to. Sometimes you see oil pooled in the port.

203 Yeah, it shouldn’t be burning oil though. 1000 hours on these is nothing. It’s semi intermittent.

During an 8 hour run it will consume about a 1/3rd of the entire sump capacity, which is only about a pint. Stinky, sometimes it it smokes visibly bad. Other times not so much.

But the plug tells the tale. A hotter plug would help insofar I wouldn’t need to put a cleaner one in every day. Otherwise it starts missing.

Just came out or nowhere. The plug was burning beautiful, and when it first started missing I didn’t even think to check the plug. Can’t be that. Ha.

Well you gotta go by the numbers. I looked up the engine. It has a breather hose that goes to the air box. If you can unhook that breather hose from the airbox and run it under a load you may get your answer. If you see smoke coming out or a shit ton of oily vapor then yeah its probably rings. Pulling the airbox gives you a view right into the carb where you may see oil pooled in the carb.

Sorry, it is all the same key ignition unit with the "ears" so I don't have to just twist the key. There is a lever behind it to release the key when I turn it off. The whole thing is out of whack, and sometimes get stuck, but it wasn't until I got the radio and windshield wipers to come back on by turning it off that the fault seemed to make sense.
I think there is an issue with wet weather too, because the windshield wipers reliably won't work when it rains. Probably the key ignition is the main problem.

That’s a good idea. Carb and intake and all that is clean and free of oil. I can pull the breather hose from the block and put it under heavy electrical load easy enough.

I saw that the other night, somebody posted it here I think. Note they never mention what star or coordinates in Lyra that was supposedly mapped out.

It did prompt me to look up habitable zone exoplanets in the Lyra region. And lo and behold, there are a few, and one is 1200 ly away. Kepler 442 b. And there is another one, Kepler 62 f, also about 1200 ly away in Lyra as well.

That may have been the genesis of that whole thing.

One came in from the top and basically got impaled on the other's tailfin. The only reason the "bottom" crew was able to eject is that the hornet airframe is twin-tailed, and therefore the top plane was off to the side on one tail so that it's body didn't cover the other canopy.

Probably not an issue here, but silicone oil does NOT play nice with electric switches.
An arc (and you get them on any circuit with inductance) between switch contacts that have silicone.oil on it breaks down the oil into... Silicon (no e). You know, sand? Wears the hell out of them. On low operation over low lifetime, probably not an issue. Company I worked for spent over a mill.replacing relays that had used silicone lubricant. The stuff creeps. Put some on a bolt at the base and it'll be over the head in a week. I don't use it anywhere near an electric switch.

Well that sure is 'convenient'.

I recently had some issues with my wipers. Screwing around with the ignition switched seemed to help... sometimes.
In the end it just needed a new control board that was co-located with the wiper motor. Like $15 on the 'zon.

Apparently the solder used in various automotive devices used some really shitty materials for a while and the solder degrades over time and connections degrade.

Quartz sand is silicon dioxide, SiO2. Most sand has at least some quartz in it; some sand is nearly pure quartz. SiO2 is a great abrasive, metallic silicon, not so much. Silicon is not really a metal; it's classed as a "semi metal" like germanium and arsenic. Crystalline, a semi-conductor, and brittle.

This frigging thing passed a leak down test with basically flying colors, and it passed the compression test, yet when it was disassembled both rings were stuck on one side of the piston, and the second ring was actually broke in 2 pieces. The engine came apart fast and easy. Thats a cool little engine.

That prompted me to look up Beta Lyrae. While it appears to the naked eye as a single point of light, it's actually six components, A - F. And Beta Lyrae A is actually a 3 star system, Aa1, Aa2, and Ab. The first two are a semi-detached close binary, meaning one star is pulling material off the other one. All three are B type stars, very hot and massive and short-lived. Some of the other components are just line-of-sight, and they aren't bound. B and F components appear to be moving together with A.

273 Surprised to see Growlers performing at an air show. They're not that plentiful and as noted by another commenter are very pricey versions of the beast. Obviously things vary but for many years almost the only performing units I've seen at air shows are dedicated touring demonstration units from the USN or USAF. There are fly-bys all kinds of aircraft, etc, and "heritage" flights where they pair up an F-15 or -16 with a P-51 and circle the field a few times. But aerobatics by Growlers?

Last year they lost one here with fortunately no casualties. Have not seen if there's a public version of the inquiry report yet. Basically a Growler took off on the cross-runway at North Island, lost power just a few seconds off the ground, and plopped into the water just across the channel. A few seconds later and the jet would have hit either the Nimitz marine research facility or civilian housing beyond. Both personnel ejected safely, one was picked up by a sportfishing boat.

Are was secured and divers got the "black" equipment out of the plane immediately. Talking to EOD guys at my range they said they did quite a bit of diving on the wreck as part of securing and salvage.

O, B, and A are far too hot and volatile (big stellar winds, loads of UV and other bad radiation) and far too short lived to have life form on planets. The habitable zone for a B type star would be beyond Pluto, and yet still get too much UV.

G and K are probably the most hospitable, and that's a complicated thing. K stars would live much longer than G, giving far more time on the main sequence than G.

The traditional mnemonic for wire color code order - black, brown red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, gray, white - has been replaced by "Bad boys rape our young girls but violet gives willingly".
The original had no confusion in remembering which " b" was first (black or brown), because it spelled it out. Can't have that. I'm well out of the training issue now, but it wouldn't surprise me that someone got their panties in a wad over "rape".

I remember that from when I had astronomy in school. K stars are stoooopid long lived stars. Billions and billions of years on the main sequence. Our G star sun would have died before a K star learned to crawl. If any K stars were around just after the birth of the universe they are still out there. Just imagine some planet with life that had billions of years of evolution.

The lifespan for G type, G0 - G9, is around 8 to 15 billion years.

The K type range goes from 15 billion to 70 billion or better. Now, red dwarves, M types go from 100 billion to possible a trillion years.

The problem with red dwarves, first there so small and cool, the habitable zones are very close in, and that means tidal locking for planets which is likely a big problem. But the big one is they can be very volatile with huge flares every so often during the lifetimes.

So, those close planets would get fried by big sterilizing flares from time to time.

Unless you've worked your way up through the chain the best way to start a band is to sponsor one. Then you are operating in your comfort zone, you have a good band and they let you 'sit in' for a couple of tunes. All is good.

300 So, missed the chatter this evening. Instead, MiladyJo and I watched a dumb movie, something I'd never heard of but a clip or trailer popped up on YooToob. Started watching it yesterday, and as testimony to how good it is we stopped about a third of the way in. I don't think Milady and I were the target audience for this 2006 teen romance fantasy. Finished watching it tonight anyway. Could have been worse. Never mind what it was, okay?

Tomorrow afternoon, if all goes well, I'm getting a crown put on a back molar. Dentist offered to just extract it, but was willing to crown it. I'm trying to keep as many as I can!
