74 Daumier is another social commenting artist who is so damn frustrating. He is capable of wonderful images. I saw a couple of his portraits that are realistic and touching and pleasant to look at. But most of his political cartoons and social commentary paintings are grotesque or at least smirking and exaggerated. They are evocative of what he wants to convey but too much of his intentions are negative and ugly. It's tiresome for the viewer, at least for me.

Today's selection isn't as bad as many of Daumier's works, it's just illustrative, which is an improvement.

128 FWIW, I have seen repeated mentions of a poll where the deceptive infographic has been passed around. Last night, bored, so did some digging.

The infographic has age breakouts of the Massie race but too many people are claiming it was an exit poll. It was not. It came from a firm called BigDataPoll and uses a mixed model of texting about 400 identified voters in Kentucky 4 that they deemed likely to vote, the person is sent a text and then fills it out online at a website or texts answers back. This is called an interactive poll by the firm.

BigDataPoll did a tracking poll of Kentucky 4 and this was intended solely for win/lose Massie, not for subgroups, And the poll failed its 95 percent confidence interval with the actual result greater than the +-4 percent claimed. The poll also had an issue where 82 percent claimed they were likely to vote while turnout was about 33 percent in reality. So you get non-random sample, numbers too small for demographic cohort information to be valid (50-100 respondents is not enough in a pool for a valid response), and other issues.

You can go to BigDataPolls directly and read the poll breakout itself.

164 The Third-Class Carriage, ca. 1856–1858
Honoré Daumier

Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco

Honoré Daumier painted many pictures of passengers on trains, a new form of transport in the nineteenth century. The growth of France's rail network made travel swifter and more accessible, but the journey was not the
same for everyone. Railway companies separated passengers into three classes through a tiered ticketing system that corresponded to the level of comfort
onboard. Here Daumier depicted travelers who have paid the lowest fare: a peasant mother and child, an old woman, and a worker in a rumpled smock. Crowded together in a dark compartment, these careworn figures exemplify Daumier’s uncompromising Realism.

It has been widely displayed in the US and Paris.

I've seen that take as well. Agree with it. Media polling is to drive a narrative, not results.

Back when I was an informed user of polls (for independent variables in big data models), I learned what was good and bad in polling circa early 2000's.

Had a friend that was setting up a statewide poll and had worked for Harris etc. as a polling director (supervisor of the survey crew). Later, our uni set up a polling op using students as interviewers.

The sampling math is still the same but the techniques have changed because non-response bias was killing the old Random Digit Dialing and good pollsters knew it by 2010.

So you get a weird mix of texts, calls, and so on and trying really hard to infer who likely voters are. Polls can give you trends nowadays but unlikely to give a great response on the horserace without really big random samples (about 1000 or so).

1) Trump will be unchained out of office; he will never let go.
2) the power of the Party to provide sinecures is dependent upon having power in government.
- 50+, many with seniority resigned in 2018 to beat Trump, on the gambit of allowing impeachment
- All or almost all Rs who voted for his impeachment are out
- RINOs are being picked off, not just at the fed level, but now at the state level.
- see also, Pence's pathetic attempt to sell a book
- see also Kinzinger and Liz Cheney, praised and feted by the Dems in 2024; where are they now?
- the gutting of NGOs also guts GOPe scams.
