Music Thread: Culture Club? Seriously?

BG2026.jpg

Boy George and Culture Club were not on my playlists when they were big, and they aren't now. Except...politics has destroyed my naiveté when it comes to entertainers, so I am in the unpleasant position of minimizing my consumption of certain people's work if they are vociferous in shoving their personal politics in my face. And the converse applies too.

Here is Boy George talking about Jews and Jewish friends. Is he a deep thinker? Uh...no. Clearly not. But he is clear in his rejection of antisemitism, and for that I respect him, and will consume his musical product. Just a little bit though; I am not going to become a born-again 1980s British (or any other) Pop Music aficionado. But I will put him on a playlist or two, and toss him a few cents pence.

***

***

Here's why some groups should never have made music videos. Good song...unspeakably boring and awful video.

***

Admit it...the Go-Gos are fun!

***

Sadly, Elvis Costello is an ass when it comes to politics, so he is one of those artists I try to minimize. But he is unarguably great, so it's tough!

***

Champagne Socialism writ small, Boston style! Fun music made by insufferable hypocrites who take themselves way, way, way too seriously!

34 Boy George was a thing amongst the gymnasts in the mid 80s.

His music was happy and catchy and we worked out to it. He was different in a way that Elton John wasn’t. He was happier. And more daring. The gouts we hung out with hated Boy George. And that was ok. Because we didn’t care. Much like the singer himself.

Be happy. Dance.

35 I love some 80s pop. I cut my teeth on this in those days before I became a headbanger.

I have no Boy George or Culture Club on my iPhone. But I would much rather listen to that then the absolute slop they play at night at the side job.

Buck Throckmorton has his rule on upright basses. I have another: if your song is, say, post 2000 and features whistling at any point, nothing is a greater indicator of just how little actual talent you have as a musician.

Wanted to get a recording of Birgit Nilsson singing the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, having been driven nuts by Bernstein's ludicrously sluggish tempo with Behrens. The one with Böhm was too fast, the one with Ludwig too slow and I finally settled on the one with Knappertsbusch.

Nilsson - in my opinion the only good thing to come from Sweden - had a huge voice that cut like diamond, like the Ethel Merman of opera. She was pretty down to earth. She was born on a farm and milked cows the morning of her first audition. She married a vet and they were together for 59 years.

Nilsson and Karajan worked together but didn't like each other much. She wore a miner's helmet with wings to a typically underlit Karajan production of Die Walküre. She responded to his detailed telegram of suggestions with "Busy. Birgit." In turn, Karajan said she could perform Scarpia without makeup.

They don't make them like that anymore.

50 Neil Young, of all people, diverted considerably from the folk-rock hippie norm in the 1980s. He was a staple on MTV.

He even got sued by Dave Geffen, for not putting out an album that was … I guess it wasn’t like Harvest or whatever. Geff said he needed to put out a “Rock and Roll” album at least.

So Neil formed the Pink Cadillacs or whatever, and put out an album of 1950s doo-wop stuff, kinda. That really pissed everyone off.

You might remember “Wonderin’” from 1980s MTV. Actually a tune he had written and recorded many times back in the 60s, revamped for the 80s skinny ties and short hair crowd.

He’s kind of a flake sometimes and his politics is out there, but I like his attitude generally. He screwed over his bandmates one too many times, however.

96 I’ve asked before. If you have talent why must you dress yourself up like a carnival sideshow performer? Gay or straight just sing. I give Adele credit for doing it right.

When Boy George did it in the 80s it was still somewhat novel (although David Bowie had been pretty far down that lane already a decade before). That was a year or two before there were 15 bands off the Sunset Strip that all used more Aqua Net and makeup than teenage girls.

I don't think I've linked to this one before. This burst into my brain while I was driving and I made MiladyJo write it down before I lost it.

Favorite thing about this one: MiladyJo was in a recording studio in Chicago in Spring, 2001, and recorded this song. Afterward, a woman there came up to her and said, admiringly, "I haven't heard that in years. I love that song!" She had taken it to be an "old standard" of some sort. Ha! Can there be a higher compliment for a ditty writer? I think it was a compliment, anyway.

171 I remember that crusty old douche Biafra at some show back in the early '00s... he didn't play a fucking note. Just whined and droned on and on about the Iraq War for like 20 minutes and then shuffled off the stage. Laaaaaaame.

172 "Pump It Up" will forever remain one of my favorite tunes, thanks to a certain Margie Davis at a going away party for one of my best friends in high school. A mutual friend hosted it, and we were in her room spinning records and I was trying to be hip listening to this "new wave" music. Margie was there and we were sort of talking when the needle slammed into the first beat of "Pump It Up". We both started dancing, and cranked it up. We adjourned into the hallway later grabbed the floor and spent the rest of the time talking and laughing. She lived across town, went to a rival school, but I got her number anyway. Jeanne and Paul were amazed, since I was a true hippie geek...and I didn't have a car. Which reduced my real chances with her to a single date and a bit of necking.

I wonder if she even remembers that party....

176 There's some Finnish violinist who said he's not going to tour the USA because he's resisting. I'd say, tell the State Department to put him on a no-fly list and keep him out permanently.

182 “Big Yellow Taxi”. Joni Mitchell wrote it. Farmers do not use DDT on Apples, she was a little confused.

Some tunes are really fun to play on guitar, for some reason. That is one of them. She was a good guitarist, actually. Made use of alternate tunings in a big way, mainly because standard tuning chords are hard to finger and can be painful, she had a case of Polio growing up so she focused on open tunings. She came up with a kind of unique tuning nomenclature to make it easy to switch around tunings. And … she’s a lunatic politically, most likely.

183 Jello Biafra was another one I hated back in the day. I always disliked Communists from an early age, but Commie punks always grated on my last nerve.

When I was in college I really loved the Lard EP that Jello did with Al Jourgensen from Ministry. That was before I knew he was an ass though.

It was such a wholesome sounding song and I thought it was about fireworks and the Bicentennial, but it's about nookie in the afternoon. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

186 I really did not get into the 80s new wave, although, in hindsight, it was a helluva lot better than the crap that's out there now.
For example, I was never a Duran Duran fan, but Ordinary World is a beautiful song.

194 Never had an appreciation for Prince. Until I saw this…
George Harrison’s R&R Hall of Fame induction.
All musicians at the top of their game, and the vocals are impressive.
Just note George’s son’s face when Prince is shredding…
