A "Grenade-Type IED" Discovered by Divers at Base of Alabama Dam

So Culturally Enriching.

A group of divers conducting routine maintenance on a dam in Mobile, Ala., discovered a hidden explosive device underwater, the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) announced on Wednesday.

Multiple outlets described the explosive as "grenade type-IED," which authorities retrieved and later detonated safely, NBC 15 reported.

"This is an unprecedented threat, and we are fortunate that this device was discovered before it could cause serious damage to our water supply or harm to individuals," MAWSS Director Bud McCrory said in a statement.

Authorities referred the discovery to the Department of Homeland Security. As of press time, they have not identified a suspect or motive for the device's placement near the dam.

3. How were they (they = evil perps who wanted to blow up the dam) going to set it off? Wires? Special sonographic remote coms link? It is not at all easy to set off an underwater explosive.

You don't get to drive for walmart without drug testing, a background check and a verifiable minimum number of miles driven. Congressturds can bring booze from wherever. However there are a couple of liquor stores that are convenient to the Capitol complex either on the House or Senate side.

Schneider's is on the Senate side and is probably the one you're thinking of. It is in fact a really damn nice liquor store. If you're hunting for a rare bourbon or wildly expensive bottle of wine, chances are they have it. They also carry all the cheap stuff, too.

That's for an 80+ year old device. Newer AT grenades are rare, but potent. You don't have to blow a damn in one go, but even a small hole or crack can grow rapidly as water rushes through and erodes it.

That said....still unlikely a single AT grenade would pierce enough concrete on a major dam to do that.

We had a fire chief fire bug doing it on his own in the 80s or something. Was on a true crime show I saw. When they caught him about 2/3 of the total annual fire count stopped.

Depends on the state. In some, antiques are still firearms but blackpowder, even modern ones, are not, in others both black powder and antiques are considered firearms, and some states don't regulate either.

Lots of gotchas under firearm laws--local, state, and federal that can easily make one a felon without even knowing it. ATF has a compiled volume of local ordinances and state firearm laws that comes out on a regular basis . Then you add the federal laws on top of it. For example, are black powder pistols considered a ghost gun if you put a cylinder on it that allows you to fire centerfire cartridges? In such edge cases, the normal way for people is to ask the ATF questions and get a response. However, that response is NOT binding on the agency.

The primary resource for these laws is the State Laws and Published Ordinances - Firearms (ATF P 5300.5), which is currently in its 36th Edition as of January 15, 2026.

303 As I mentioned in the ONT once, my Marine WWII father brought a lot of Japanese stuff home from the Pacific. One item was a Japaneses grenade with the pin still intact. His sister, my aunt, used it as a door stop in the house where I learned to walk (we had an apt in the house).

This was discovered after she died and over 80yrs of living there in MS. My mother called her cousin, the police chief, who quietly sent the bomb squad without fanfare or the news. They quietly boomed it away from the old lady neighborhood.

My father was vetoed by my brothers and mother of his idea to simply throw it in his 10 acre lake. We imagined someone expecting a large mouth bass on the line vs the boom of a lifetime.

This sounds different, however, as it would have been a surprise but not have impacted drinking water.
