Overnight Open Thread [05/18/2026]

I knew that the Yukon River was long, but almost 2,000 miles long? Pretty impressive! I first learned about the Yukon River from Jack London in The Call of the Wild, and White Fang. And because I was a kid, I dug into a lot of his other stories, which were chock full of the Yukon River. It has been awhile, but one collection of short stories, called Smoke Bellew, still resonates.

I think I wanted to be a gold prospector in Alaska for a few years, and of course have a dog just like White Fang!

That has certainly morphed into communist and communist-adjacent, although their end game is just the same. One day American schools will once again teach the evils of communism, and we will be much better off as a country.

Maybe I am naive, but I am genuinely puzzled by people who are true believers. As a political philosophy, it is so transparently false that it is difficult to comprehend the suspension of logic and the discarding of knowledge of the human condition that is necessary to believe in it.

The bosses are a different issue. They want power, and are willing to do anything to get it and exercise it. THAT I understand, because it is sadly part of the human condition.

German Tourist Killed by Cobra Bite at Egypt Hotel Snake Show

According to PEOPLE, the 57-year-old man, from the Unterallgäu region of Germany, was traveling with two family members when the incident occurred. The resort had staged a snake show for guests featuring two cobras, during which the snake charmer moved through the audience encouraging guests to handle the snakes and drape them around their necks.
During the show, the cobra found its way into the man’s clothing and struck him in the leg. The venom took effect quickly — he needed emergency resuscitation at the scene before being rushed to a hospital, where doctors were unable to save him. He has not been publicly identified.

This is me being naive again. Are there really people who are so stupid and oblivious that they think having a cobra slither around your neck as part of the night's entertainment is a good idea?

In the real world, Paul Simon should be considered modern music's best bard, simply because he is slightly less pompous. Add in a tremendous number of fine songs with fine, poetic lyrics, and little Bobby is merely a pretender to the throne. And his enthusiastic participation in politics, while probably good for his career, is grating. Plus, "Hurricane" is a terrible song, and Ruben Carter was a thug, and my guess is that he did the crime.

I got it to work in the back yard and I even ran a couple of loads of laundry hooked to the garden hose. Then I moved it back into the laundry room, where it failed to function again.
Getting that machinery to work would make me feel like I had accomplished something. All I have learned so far is how to disassemble a washing machine and put it back together.

Hell, I missed it, but speaking of Uranus conjunctions, Mercury just got close to Uranus yesterday. Too close to the Sun to see anything, but it happened.

And you can't see Uranus with the naked eye anyway (unless you're in very dark skies with very good, non-29 yr old eyesight).

I will check the door switch and have the start capacitor checked. Chances are, however, that the clutch on the motor is gooey and sticks, which means tearing it all the way down.

This is not a standard machine, I think it is a Frankenstein made from multiple junked machines. If it were a car it would have four different tires. The problem is that it is a better washer than buying a new one from Lowes.

96 Yesterday's airshow crash in Idaho: All four Navy crew members are reported in "stable" condition, with "non-profit threatening" injuries. They must have had one Hell of a ride when they ejected.

The Air Force Base is in a rather isolated area, and there aren't a lot of roads in the vicinity. The aircraft wreckage managed to fall directly on top of one of the few paved roads in the area. Fortunately, it wasn't the main highway to the base that sees thousands of trips per day, but several hundred people who live at the other end of the road will now have to made a 30 minute detour for a few days.

For Simon, I'm thinking particularly of Graceland and for Ma, his "bluegrass" albums. In my opinion, not all such experiments are successful but without them, we would've missed some great music.

FYI, Scarborough Fair / Canticle was a rare piece created by both of them. These two songs were old folk songs. Beautifully put together.

I had a 1988 Mitsubishi Starion back in the day. The wiper speed was somehow triggered to the moving speed of the car. So if you set the intermittent speed to perfection at a stop light, it would speed up to match the speed of the car so you didn't have to manually compensate and fiddle with the switch. It worked great. I thought that was a pretty cool thing for 1988. That car had a bunch of little shit like that.

No it is humming. I have a grain mill that I have to start by giving it a push, and the motor sounds like that before it starts to spin. So, capacitor or something gunking up the motor. I think a shaft coupler will make a grinding or stuttering noise as it gives up the ghost.

If it had not occurred to him what that green liquid stuff was spewing around atomizing, well, it will be too late as the methane concoction will knock him flat. I guess it depends on where you are in jersey. North east is different from north west and is different from central, and is different from south. Kinda like a mini united states. Certain areas have an influx of people from Staten island and brooklyn, and from central jersey you could be as little as 10 minutes from Staten island, and since the bars were open later over there it was a big thing to head to staten island after the bar closed here. You have a lot of cross pollination in that area. Also a lot of staten islanders ended up in Marlboro. When I was doing kitchens in that area in the 80s it was amazing how many were from staten island. Some of the car shows I go to now have groups of dudes that slowly moved here from there. I know of at least 6 dudes in the last few years who moved here. You would definitely hear gabagool in these areas. lol

The true magic of her voice was in the lower registers, what she called her basement voice. She said the money's in the basement.

I remember reading something a good while back about that. She couldn't really belt it out in her lower registers, so they had to use a close mike, which can be tricky.

Her higher registers were good too, but the magic was in the basement. She would contrast them sometimes, and that could really show off the basement magic.

Influence is a measure of greatness, yes. Advantage Dylan. On the other hand, I'll turn off the radio at the opening notes of certain Dylan songs. I can't think of a single Paul Simon tune that draws that kind of reaction...Slip Sliding Away? Depends on my mood...

Someone broke her heart forever.Have read her brief marriage did it & reinforced her bad self esteem as he'd say bad stuff to her. This turd was a cheater & did not tell her he'd had a vasectomy.

No one broke my heart except by dying,which was not his fault. It was very brief & I was very young, age 20yrs.

Taking a year off with not many dates (not unusual) and focusing on school helped.

I met the husband of my youth exactly a year later. Who would tick me off now and then the first year, but I was only sad and weepy one day (it's all I can stand of myself). Then irritated at break ups.

Eating disorders are hard to beat. As a charge RN I was rounding and opened the door to a 15yr old skeleton in her bed as the psych ward was full.She took my breath away.

She & her mother had decided to diet & she never stopped, no matter the psych consults, etc. A night or two later she bit through her feeding tubing & later had a respiratory arrest. Then sent to a state mental hospital. I heard she lived but don't know.

Eh, music like all art is subjective. And I get not liking Dylan cause of some of his politics despite the fact he became a Christian singer later in life but pretending he wasn't an amazingly gifted songwriter is kind of silly. To this day their are people who shun him because he went electric at the Newport Folk Festival and brought all that music, including Simon, to a new audience.

Lots of people still think Hendrix wrote All Along the Watchtower.

I retired in 2015 after 42 years as a merchant marine engineer. Lightfoot wrote that line right after I started sailing and it's been an earworm ever since. Anyone at sea in a hurricane or a noreaster would know the feeling along with his other line about the wind in the wires.

Good call, Helena. Washers have very sensitive air pressure switch, attached to a hose that runs to the bottom of the outer drum. As water rises in the drum, trapped air in the tube is compressed, and trips the switch to shut off the fill solenoids. That's how the fill level is set. If that hose is compromised, washer may overfill, or not fill at all.
