Top Story

  • Google's Googlebook is the company's answer to Google's Chromebook. (Tom's Hardware)

    It's a laptop running Android.

Which raises the question: Why didn't the Chromebook run Android in the first place?

There are no specs or indeed any hardware information at all; that will be left to Google's partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

It might potentially be a good time to be launching a laptop that doesn't need 32GB of RAM to get out of bed - as indicated by the runaway success of Apple's MacBook Neo. And there's a slim chance that at least one of the partner companies won't screw things up.

I remember when Alcoa built an aluminum smelter in some African country. It was supposed to be "economic development," practically doing them a favor, and it destabilized their entire power grid.

The whole country. From just one plant.

34 73 F. here, supposedly less humid today through the end of the week. (Ha. Ah believes it when Ah feels it.)

Today I have to call the IRS to get the issue of my refund straightened out. I told them on my return to keep it and apply it to my '26 taxes; they think I want it sent to me, but say I didn't provide a bank account. Well, we're beyond the tax filing period now, and their own website says call volumes are lower Wed. through Friday, so we'll see. Maybe I can get a call back.

Afterward I'll take Miss Linda out to drop off her power bill, and we can get a coffee, I guess.

Oh, they aren't the only ones. The cretins running my current employer are doing similar shit. Some of the lower level managers (like mine) are doing their best shielding efforts, but I expect that to degrade over time (I don't expect them to lose their jobs to save their subordinate's jobs when we all know that the replacement lower level manager has a convenient bus to throw recalcitrant subordinates under within days.)

I didn't go into software to become a Business Analyst (BA); that is a very useful job for a company, if done correctly and well. The specifications that you end up having to give to one of the current AI agents are almost exactly the things that a BA will create. *Shrugs* Good thing my target retirement date is

43 Spotted a couple of very good houses in Terre Haute, IN. One is a little (okay, a lot) more than I wanted to pay -- but *everything has been done*, from laminate flooring to a patio area in back, and a garage as well as a useful basement. If it proves as good as it looks, and the sellers will come down by about $5K, I could do it; I really could.

There are a couple of less expensive properties that would need a little cosmetic work like wall paint and laminate flooring in the bedrooms. I guess I have to think of this like I'm a military family moving from Germany, and everything has to be handled and ordered remotely. Scary for sure.

There is a work acquaintance, a very smart man at his job, who has interesting views on Africa. A black guy, He believes Africa is being held back by the US and Europe. He then started singing the praises of China and its development of Africa. He believes the US will be left behind by Africa because the world is abandoning America. He's in a powerful position at work so I kept my mouth shut. Even smart people can be enraptured by dumb ideas. Orwell's quote about intellectuals comes to mind.

52 Megachurch Pastor Mark Driscoll of the fast-growing Trinity Church in Scottsdale, Arizona, sparked controversy on Mother’s Day with a message that honored Mary, the mother of Jesus, while challenging the nation’s largest abortion provider. The sermon drew both praise from pro-life advocates and criticism from those who objected to the pastor’s direct approach.

Maybe I'm just some heretic but I think that Pastors should address these issues directly and use concrete examples in real life. And apparently, his church is growing in membership because they are very outspoken about their beliefs.

I think that the kindest thing you could do is encourage him to have a real long African trip, preferably an immersion experience. If he's religious, a mission through his church. If he's secular and entrepreneurial, maybe some kind of economic development type thing -- surely he can do like the Chinese, but better! Or if nothing else, at least an "immersion experience" of some kind, to "connect with his roots" or whatever.

There is a meta, "In {African country}, the difference between a tourist and a racist is {number} weeks." It may break his heart to have his illusions shattered, but it is better to deal with the world as it is than to be a pseudo-schizophrenic from sheer ignorance. Well, certainly better for you than having to bite your tongue all the time.

Sonofabitchin' AKC website is down for maintenance. The quest to fill in the blank spaces in Dutch's show career - absent any contemporaneous record - has to wait.

The AKC has him at 579 Grand Champion points and I can only account for 543 of them. He was shown only for parts of 2013, when he was recovering from bloat and torsion, and 2015 before his final illness. So I'm looking for "open" weekends on my spreadsheet and seeing if he was at any shows in TX, LA, MS or AR in that time.

84 She is campaigning for the UK to pay slave reparations. Her father, now deceased, became fabulously rich due to oil, gas, and minerals. On her mother's side she is considered a princess of Nigeria.

It is the Nigerian side that is drawing the most scrutiny. Seems her great grandfather was King of Lagos and the British deposed him because he was in the slave trade. Another relative owned 1,400 slaves.

The Green Party is of course calling all of this 'racist.'

132 And after using AI extensively on my own software projects I can confidently say that, software should be better, they should offer more functionality and look better.

What you can do with AI is nothing short of magical.

I was working with the database for my ERP last night, typically use either pgadmin or pgcli, which are great but are deep, I worked with two agents to craft my own electron app to work with and create databases. Two hours total from start to finish and it looks better and operate better than anything currently on the market in my opinion.

So people who have vastly more software knowledge and experience than should be creating paradigm shifting software.

The most impressive aspect of it is the ERD diagram module, it looks like it was lifted from the Eraser I/o website. I mean it probably was but that’s not important right now.

What’s important is that software should be markedly better.

And that’s what AIs true utility is for the average person. Soon, you are not going to need software companies to create anything for you, you will be able to create what you want and make it look and function how you want.
