New Foreign Pirate Pillaging Operation Uncovered: 10,000 Foreign Students "Working" at Fraudulent Jobs Created by Fraudulent "Employers"
Why the hell would we be paying foreign students to work, anyway? Why on earth would we be subsidizing foreigners to come here?
Pay full freight or go home. Better yet, go home whether you're paying full freight or not. Correction: I assumed the taxpayers were paying the salaries of these fake "workers." But I haven't seen anyone say that and now believe this is simply a scheme to remain in the country beyond the limits of one's student visa. I'll try to find out if government money is being used to pay these "workers," but for now, I'm rewriting the post to remove my claims about that.The fraud concerns a program called Optional Practical Training, which involves foreign students "working" in "jobs" allegedly related to the fields they're training for. Google's AI digest:
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary work authorization for F-1 visa students in the U.S. to gain hands-on experience directly related to their major field of study. It typically offers 12 months of employment, either pre- or post-completion of studies, with a 24-month extension available for STEM majors.So if there's a fraudulent student "worker," he gets 12 months of extra time in the US or possibly 36 months if he's learning how to build bombs for terrorist organizations, or how to smuggle Chinese bioweapon specimens into the US. I assume that's what STEM means in this situation.
The entire scheme seems built to defraud the American voter and reportedly that's exactly what it's being used for.

My guess is we have these programs because the big companies you just listed struggle recruiting domestic talent, esp in STEM roles. This is, I suspect, more "nobody wants to work anymore" bullshit when what it really means is no Americans want to work 18 hours a day for pay that broken down hourly is less than minimum wage.

I think the big issue with the OPT program is that Amazon, google et. al. get a tax break. They don't have to pay FICA or something because the students are presumably going to go to their own country in 1-3 years to work and then retire.
They may also have other tax breaks. But I don't grok why the F-1 visa students would use a shell company that does not have a job in their field to stay here. Perhaps they make more here even in non STEM jobs than they'd make at home, but I would have thought the cost of living here would negate that benefit.

We need that in Canada, too. I would take it further: you have to be born here from parents also born here, and at least one grandparent has to have been born here.

I stumbled onto youtube show of Austrailian immigration control that come down on foreigners like a ton of bricks if that have a paying job. They immediately get taken to detention and shipped back home in a matter of days.
For some reason they don't like foreign workers taking jobs away from their native citizens. Strange, isn't it?
