President Joe Biden's Homeland Security chief acknowledged Tuesday that the U.S. should have acted sooner to tighten immigration controls at the U.S. border with Mexico. In an interview at the POLITICO Security Summit, former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who became a lightning rod of Republican criticism for the Biden administration's alleged mishandling of a historic wave of migration to the United States, placed most of the blame on a "broken immigration system" that set a "low bar" for admission to the country for those with "credible fear of persecution." Asked if earlier steps from the Biden administration on border security -- including raising the bar for migrants claiming "credible fear" of returning to their home country -- would have prevented President Donald Trump's return to the White House, Mayorkas replied: "I am not in a position to speculate, but I will tell you that I would be far more better rested and less punched." Mayorkas, who was impeached by the House in 2024 on claims that he intentionally did not enforce U.S. immigration laws, also emphasized that the Biden administration did, eventually, act to address the migrant influx at the border. "I was very pleased that in June of 2024, we took executive action that, I thought, made reforms that were sensible and that proved successful," Mayorkas said. "Our tougher border stance in June of '24 was coupled with an increased focus on providing lawful pathways for people to arrive at the United States outside the hands of smugglers -- more secure and more humanitarian. Those two combined -- our numbers dropped 70, 75 percent."BTW, I couldn't remember his exact position. I thought he was DHS but decided that there's no way even Biden would appoint such an absolute zero to such a crucial position, so I wrote he was "Secretary of the Interior." But then I checked. Nope, he's was SecDHS.

Poor Dutch's show career may never be chronicled properly. The AKC says he had 579 Grand Champion points, but I can only account right now for 530 of them. Where are the others? Right now, I have no idea.
The AKC doesn't have searchable records before 2016 and it's 2010-2015 I need. At least he was shown in a limited area and it will be a hard slog going through every club in that area to find the records of past events.

🚨South Carolina Redistricting is NOT dead even if Massey & cronies win this vote.
Here’s the next play—
If the senate blocks Redistricting Resolution it goes back to the SC House.
The House can simply nonconcur to Senate changes and refuse to pass a Sine Die Resolution (the resolution that calls them back for a special session).
This would allow the Governor to call a Special Session.
At that special session, Redistricting can pass by a simply majority instead of a 2/3rds vote.
You may say—but the Governor said he won’t call one!

I recommend the extension HushMode, at least in Brave, it works great. The video loads in X and waits for me to hit the great big Play button before starting, then defaults to sound on without my having to touch that specific control, which is exactly the behavior that I want.

Yep. And I would set House of Representative voters back in their home state rather than DC. They can go to DC for ceremonial reasons and keep a skeleton office there. But there is no need anymore for the House to be physically present in order to vote nowadays. Their debates are a joke, their committee hearings would be better off rotated around the country, and that would leave the Senate isolated in its DC wankery.

There are also a lot of people here who don't live in a district or even a state where they know no matter how hard they vote they are not going to win because of how their districts are drawn.
This leads to voters not bothering to turn out and the local party withering. Many Democrats who had a sure win district every single election cycle are about to learn how this works. Many Republicans who haven't bothered to vote are also about to learn.
Just because we bathe in doom around here don't underestimate the power of optimism on people who never had it.

If you look at the population of the country at its founding and the size of the House, it was something like 1 rep for every 30K people. Which if you want the same proportion today, you'd end up with a House with 10K reps.
Sounds unworkable at first, but I think it could be done. And people would again be able to actually know their representative in Congress.

People, small animals, large animals, flat things, long things, round things, pairs of chopsticks..... there are about 500 of these categories.

I wonder if any of those was the DoorDash driver that ran into our garage door when she got out of the car. She managed to not put the vehicle in park (going uphill in our driveway) and then walk in front of her vehicle before it got going and rammed into our garage door. She was almost to our door when it crunched in.

If you want to say there are X of something in Japanese, you can only use a generic "counter word" if there are 10 or fewer things. Otherwise, you need to know what you're counting. People, small animals, large animals, flat things, long things, round things, pairs of chopsticks..... there are about 500 of these categories.
Generic counter words: hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu, yottsu..... but these stop at 10.
People: hitori, futari, sannin, yonin.....
Dogs (small animals): ippiki, nihiki, sanbiki, yonhiki.....
Years: ichinen, ninen, sannen, yonen.....
Years of age: issai, nisai, sansai, yonsai.....

Same in Mandarin and Korean. I would always have to default to the generic-generic "unit." Loose translations, Three units of paper, four units of dog, 8 units of hair, etc.
