Update: Whoops! The below was supposed to be part of the last post. I guess it's just some bonus content. Related: Biden's Open Borders Czar -- DHS Secretary Alexandro Mayorkas -- at long last admits that maybe they should have enforced the border slightly more than not at all. President Joe Biden's Homeland Security chief acknowledged Tuesday that the U.S. should have acted sooner to tighten immigration controls at the U.S. border with Mexico. In an interview at the POLITICO Security Summit, former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who became a lightning rod of Republican criticism for the Biden administration's alleged mishandling of a historic wave of migration to the United States, placed most of the blame on a "broken immigration system" that set a "low bar" for admission to the country for those with "credible fear of persecution." Asked if earlier steps from the Biden administration on border security -- including raising the bar for migrants claiming "credible fear" of returning to their home country -- would have prevented President Donald Trump's return to the White House, Mayorkas replied: "I am not in a position to speculate, but I will tell you that I would be far more better rested and less punched." Mayorkas, who was impeached by the House in 2024 on claims that he intentionally did not enforce U.S. immigration laws, also emphasized that the Biden administration did, eventually, act to address the migrant influx at the border. "I was very pleased that in June of 2024, we took executive action that, I thought, made reforms that were sensible and that proved successful," Mayorkas said. "Our tougher border stance in June of '24 was coupled with an increased focus on providing lawful pathways for people to arrive at the United States outside the hands of smugglers -- more secure and more humanitarian. Those two combined -- our numbers dropped 70, 75 percent."BTW, I couldn't remember his exact position. I thought he was DHS but decided that there's no way even Biden would appoint such an absolute zero to such a crucial position, so I wrote he was "Secretary of the Interior." But then I checked. Nope, he's was SecDHS. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Mayorkas? Wasn't he impeached?
Let's ask Al Gore's Amazing Internet(TM): "Republicans have made sharp criticism of Mayorkas' policies and tenure, leading to his impeachment for dereliction of duty in a narrow and largely partisan 214–213 vote by the House of Representatives in 2024. Mayorkas is the first cabinet member to be impeached since William Belknap in 1876. The Senate voted 51–49 to dismiss the impeachment charges on April 17, ending the impeachment without a trial." And this from South Carolina House Rep.
Adam Morgan @RepAdamMorgan · 4h 🚨South Carolina Redistricting is NOT dead even if Massey & cronies win this vote. Here’s the next play— If the senate blocks Redistricting Resolution it goes back to the SC House. The House can simply nonconcur to Senate changes and refuse to pass a Sine Die Resolution (the resolution that calls them back for a special session). This would allow the Governor to call a Special Session. At that special session, Redistricting can pass by a simply majority instead of a 2/3rds vote. You may say—but the Governor said he won’t call one! True. But likely his tune will change. And even if @henrymcmaster doesn’t, the state budget still hasn’t been passed… Hypothetically if the House doesn’t pass a final version of the budget by 5pm Thursday (adjournment/end of session), then the Governor MUST call them back for a Special Session. Today's adventure was replacing a toilet fill valve.
1. Shut off water at angle stop and flush toilet to drain tank. 2. Disconnect water supply and find angle stop isn't holding and is letting water dribble out. 3. Throw down a bath towel and decide to press on rather than crawling into the crawlspace to shut off house water supply. 4. Remove old fill valve from tank. Discover there is more water in the tank than I thought. Throw down another towel. 5. Install new fill valve in tank. Have the wit to run the little fill tube into the overflow pipe. 6. Lay down on floor for access. Attach water supply to fill valve. Open angle stop a little. Close angle stop, mop up more water, then attach water supply correctly. Turn on water. Heave sigh of relief at the lack of leaks. 7. Place hand on closed toilet seat lid to lever myself off the floor. Accessorize cheap toilet seat lid with a giant crack. 8. Give toilet a successful flush and break out the whiskey early. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 12, 2026 08:52 PM (cEHXL) 168

Since the redistricting issue has become the center of attention a lot of people have noticed that New England that Republicans get about 40% of the national vote yet have zero representation in the House. Those of us who live here noticed that years ago. Because we live it. We know we are going to lose outside a miracle and yet we still turn out to take 40% of the vote. Imagine the turnout if we thought we could win. Imagine what will happen to the Democrat vote if they think they can lose. Posted by: JackStraw at May 12, 2026 09:00 PM (viF8m) 185

Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at May 12, 2026 08:52 PM Could have taken the opportunity to replace it with a Ferguson while you were doing all of that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wrj6-ZzJbiQ Posted by: Duncanthrax at May 12, 2026 09:08 PM (0sNs1) Posted by: Anna Puma at May 12, 2026 09:08 PM (2GVsD) 202

Korea was a close as I've come to a real-world "who's on first" conversation.
During the currency crash in 1998, we had to audit a subsidiary that was asking us for cash. They were on the verge of running out because the banks were refusing to extend lines of credit. And the company was literally hand to mouth needing those lines. So I look at their cash flow statement, and it shows 9 individual loc's. "Have you received this cash?" "No" "Then you have to remove it from your cash flow statement" "But we need that cash" "But the bank has told you they will not renew the line" "But we need that cash" And this repeated several loops for each line. Got a great dinnerout of that trip and a good night of shopping in the itea-won (sp). Told our finance wizards "yeah, they're well and truly screwed. Cut 'em a check or they'll be dormant in a week. If you want to say there are X of something in Japanese, you can only use a generic "counter word" if there are 10 or fewer things. Otherwise, you need to know what you're counting. People, small animals, large animals, flat things, long things, round things, pairs of chopsticks..... there are about 500 of these categories. Generic counter words: hitotsu, futatsu, mittsu, yottsu..... but these stop at 10. People: hitori, futari, sannin, yonin..... Dogs (small animals): ippiki, nihiki, sanbiki, yonhiki..... Years: ichinen, ninen, sannen, yonen..... Years of age: issai, nisai, sansai, yonsai..... Posted by: mikeski-san =============== Same in Mandarin and Korean.
