I'd like to thing that everyone else in the world would build their floating bridges to accommodate at least two lanes of traffic and not make waves as the cars travel over it. ... though admittedly, making it only one lane and presumably switching traffic directions after every vehicle would likely prevent it from being overloaded and swamped. There's just too much going on with the German language. You have waffen/waffe which descends from the proto-west wapn p-ff switch and we get weapon.
But then you have waffle from old high german waba honeycomb and wefan "to weave". And the verb waffle apparently has a completely different scottish origin. No wonder english is so screwed up. It's basically a patois that got too big. Posted by: banana Dream at May 11, 2026 07:34 PM (3uBP9) Posted by: runner at May 11, 2026 07:34 PM (GD0B3) 43

My brother's backyard is paver land, beautiful. Large elevated paver porch, lower massive paver area with a fire pit and out door kitchen. All done with tumbled pavers, I told him I wanted to do pavers in my yard since the concrete patio is sinking and starting to pitch towards the house. He says don't do it, you'll be a slave to all the weeds that come up. I said I never see any weeds in yours. He says because I'm constantly digging out the weeds, I get these green sprouts everywhere. I said just spray the damn things. He says yeah, so instead of green things I'll have dead brown things. He suggested stamped concrete. I still want pavers, easy to repair.
Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at May 11, 2026 08:15 PM (snZF9) Get a blowtorch and burn them. At least it will be fun. I got some flat rocks for most of my tiny yard and at one point pulled out most of the dirt between the rocks and replaced it with small rocks. Took quite a while for any weeds to start growing and pulling was quite easy. That was some years back though. Posted by: Oldcat at May 11, 2026 08:25 PM (8avO+) 107

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at May 11, 2026 08:15 PM (snZF9) I have a paver pathway out to the shed because I salvaged them from the neighbor who replaced his old patio with a new one. It is replacing the old path that was made out of fired clay blocks that were disintegrating. I don't know the trick to keep them weed free, but the nice thing is if you don't care, you can let the weeds and grass colonize the gaps and mow it. The extra nice thing is that it remains water permeable, unlike a concrete slab, which needs a camber or slope away from the house. The drawback is without a good leveled gravel and sand base, it will get lumpy and/or swaybacked like a backcountry road in slide country. Mine I did over a couple of weekends, and then re-levelled for a couple of summers, so I don't much care any more. Make sure the gaps between the pavers are about 1/2-3/4" and I suggest a final level of crushed limestone for grouting because the white finish looks nice. It keeps my shoes out of the mud in the winter, which is what I needed most. Posted by: Kindltot at May 11, 2026 08:40 PM (rbvCR) 122

Lindsey Graham Urges Caution as South Carolina Redistricting Push Threatens to Invalidate Early Votes
https://tinyurl.com/m3nrtezp Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has warned his own party to proceed carefully with South Carolina’s redistricting push, cautioning that thousands of voters who have already cast ballots in the statewide primary could be disenfranchised if the primary date is moved... ...Graham argued there is no justification for shifting the statewide primary date when early voting is already underway. He said a congressional primary could potentially be pushed back to August if lawmakers ultimately decide to draw new maps, but he drew a clear line at altering the schedule for the broader statewide contest. “Thousands of people have already voted. We shouldn’t invalidate their votes,” Graham said. “There is no reason to change the primary. People have already voted.” Posted by: BetaCuck4Lyfe at May 11, 2026 08:43 PM (9aVck) 124

I've been in the ER a number of times. One time in high school I went to get my left hand fixed after a football game. It hurt quite a bit and I remember getting a bit testy cause it was taking so long to get seen.
Then an ambulance brought in a guy who was hit on the highway while hitchhiking. I heard one of the ER guys telling the nurse he had "broken every bone in his body". I was ok with him going ahead of me. Posted by: JackStraw at May 11, 2026 09:31 PM (viF8m) 188
Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, is accusing Delcy Rodriguez of complicity in the US action to capture President Nicolas Maduro,
Delcy Rodriguez has in response told the Secretary General that he is both incorrect, and exceeding his role at the UN, and for the UN. In related news, there are reports that the US is performing overflights of Cuba, presumably to collect real time information, much in the way that the US was doing overflights of Venezuela last December. If this is true, then everything Biden Signed into Law is NULL and VOID ?????
Sadly, no. Biden was duly elected by the members of the Electoral College. They are the ones whose election was a crime. Funny though, most of Trump’s legal troubles in Georgia came from challenging the electors from the state of Georgia. Could the false electors be charged with anything? I am feeling vindictive. "The crisis threatens to cause embarrassment for the King who is due to set out the Government's legislative programme for the coming session at tomorrow's State Opening of Parliament. And the moral of the story is ...
"Estíbaliz Kortazar Errecatxo rented a room to a 48-year-old North African migrant out of humanitarian solidarity through a volunteer association. It is reported that the migrant tenant eventually stopped paying rent, damaged her property, and subjected her to psychological harassment and threats. He reportedly targeted her with persistent insults, including derogatory and misogynistic language. Kortazar alleged he watched pornography in her presence, made unwelcome sexual innuendos, and ignored basic hygiene in the shared home. He also intentionally kept the television volume high at night and left lights on constantly to disturb her. Kortazar was forced to flee her own home out of fear. Reports indicate the man changed the locks and occupied the property." Posted by: runner at May 11, 2026 09:46 PM (GD0B3) 213
