The historical-- and religious -- inspirations for Tolkein's lembas bread/"waybread." If you don't have the time, it's based partly on the holy communion wafer, which is said to provide spiritual sustenance, just as the lembas bread, Merry says, gives "heart." It's also based on stuff like WWI era hard-tack.

Interesting: He claims that the first waffles were created as people were experimenting with the grills that made communion wafers, and claims that "waffles" is related to "wafers." I don't know if that's true, but the words "wafer" and "waffle" do seem related.

Yeah, the one between Mercer Island and Seattle proper, IIRC (though I probably don't).

Though honestly my first guess on the floating bridge was China. I'd like to thing that everyone else in the world would build their floating bridges to accommodate at least two lanes of traffic and not make waves as the cars travel over it.

... though admittedly, making it only one lane and presumably switching traffic directions after every vehicle would likely prevent it from being overloaded and swamped.

I got a "tuck pointer trowel" for repointing brickwork, and I use that for grubbing out the spaces between my pavers in the back yard path.
It means I get to spend quality time on my hands and knees, but it is easier than digging out and then resetting the pavers to get the weeds out, which previously was the only way short of herbicide to keep the weeds and grass out.

Rainy month in Texas, i was waiting all day on Friday for the small engine guy to show up and change out the blade on my mower.

My brother's backyard is paver land, beautiful. Large elevated paver porch, lower massive paver area with a fire pit and out door kitchen. I had pavers and sprayed. Worked fine. A little zoom zoom over the top with a weed eater if anything comes up but I used the strong season long killer and didn't really have a problem. You do have to lay a good sand + gravel foundation first. But like you said easy to repair.

Get a blowtorch and burn them. At least it will be fun.

I got some flat rocks for most of my tiny yard and at one point pulled out most of the dirt between the rocks and replaced it with small rocks. Took quite a while for any weeds to start growing and pulling was quite easy. That was some years back though.

I have a paver pathway out to the shed because I salvaged them from the neighbor who replaced his old patio with a new one. It is replacing the old path that was made out of fired clay blocks that were disintegrating.
I don't know the trick to keep them weed free, but the nice thing is if you don't care, you can let the weeds and grass colonize the gaps and mow it. The extra nice thing is that it remains water permeable, unlike a concrete slab, which needs a camber or slope away from the house.
The drawback is without a good leveled gravel and sand base, it will get lumpy and/or swaybacked like a backcountry road in slide country.

Mine I did over a couple of weekends, and then re-levelled for a couple of summers, so I don't much care any more. Make sure the gaps between the pavers are about 1/2-3/4" and I suggest a final level of crushed limestone for grouting because the white finish looks nice. It keeps my shoes out of the mud in the winter, which is what I needed most.

My late Uncle, a farmer, who I also helped...mainly yard work or checking on him got us some of the good stuff from the farmer's co-op.

I've been hiring a guy to spray and the yard looks great. It looks foresty with all the trees but it looks great.

Just because I like to let all of you know Canadian prices of things, the spraying cost $100 cash...so about $70 US for a pretty large corner lot.

A lot of the plant beds have stones and that weed fabric. Decades old and useless. I'll just have things chemically nuked.

I've only been in an ER once. Many years ago for appendicitis (didn't know what it was at the time). I sat there for many hours before being seen. In fairness, I believe half the population of Tamaulipas was ahead of me.

If you want to get seen instantly, announce that you have chest pains and are bleeding from the ass. An elderly black gentleman did that while I was there and he got the VIP treatment.

187 I've been in the ER a number of times. One time in high school I went to get my left hand fixed after a football game. It hurt quite a bit and I remember getting a bit testy cause it was taking so long to get seen.

Then an ambulance brought in a guy who was hit on the highway while hitchhiking. I heard one of the ER guys telling the nurse he had "broken every bone in his body".

I was ok with him going ahead of me.

Sadly, no. Biden was duly elected by the members of the Electoral College. They are the ones whose election was a crime.
