Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Quick Hits![]() The former mayor of Arcadia resigned after admitting to acting as an illegal foreign agent of China in a federal plea deal unsealed on Monday. Eileen Wang agreed with prosecutors that she worked with the People's Republic of China to boost propaganda with a fake news website on US soil between 2020 and 2022. She was elected to Arcadia City Council in November 2022. The city is within LA County. Wang pled guilty to the federal charge at her arraignment in downtown Los Angeles on Monday afternoon. She faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. LA's top federal prosecutor Bill Essayli said this is not the first time China has been caught trying to exert its influence in the United States. "Ms. Wang is just the latest to act as an agent for the PRC and it should terrify Americans that she was able to rise to the highest levels of local office in her city," Essayli said. According to court documents, Wang worked with her then fiancé, Yaoning "Mike" Sun, on a web site called "U.S. News Center," which claimed to be news source for Chinese Americans. But in reality the pair were carrying out Beijing's orders through the site, and sharing data on how many people had viewed the story with Chinese officials. Wang and Sun "executed directives" from the Chinese government, posting propaganda designed to help China and reporting back to their masters with screenshots showing how many people viewed the stories, according to the plea agreement. In one case, Wang's spymaster ordered her to post a PRC-authored essay denying the existence of genocide and forced labor in the Xinjiang region, according to the document. "There is no genocide in Xinjiang; there is no such thing as 'forced labor' in any production activity, including cotton production. Spreading such rumor is to defame China, destroy Xinjiang's safety and stability," wrote Wang's master, according to the plea agreement. Paul Sperry Libs of TikTok Paul A. Szypula

Walgreens spent $400,000 a year on security officers in addition to other measures, but that wasn't enough.
Thieves would break through the defenses and rob the store anyway. Were the "security officers" allowed to stop thieves? Or were they unarmed and instructed to be "good witnesses" who did nothing? Retail theft is through the roof everywhere. In bad neighborhoods, the gangs bust in and steal the shit. In better neighborhoods, people driving nice SUVs pass stuff through the self-checkout without scanning it. That’s why big box stores have started reducing the number of self-check aisles and/or adding more employee supervision. We’ve basically normalized and legalized retail theft in the last 5 years.

I am shocked and saddened to learn that the county that his Osama Bin Ladin for years and years, is doing this to us!!
"Scoop via @CBSNews: As Pakistan positioned itself as a diplomatic conduit between Tehran and Washington, it quietly allowed Iranian military aircraft to park in its country, potentially shielding them from US airstrikes, sources told @JimLaPorta and me. Days after Trump announced the ceasefire in early April, Tehran sent multiple aircraft to Pakistan Air Force Base Nur Khan. Among the military hardware was an Iranian Air Force RC-130, a reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering variant of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules tactical transport aircraft." "How do you plan to meet the sexual needs of 600 men?"
Wow I must be American, because my first reaction is "That's not the government's job" If those men were normal men from civilized societies that question wouldn't need to be asked because the answer is "They have sufficient self-control to find licit outlets on their own." I am really hoping that the intent of the questioner was a very politely and diplomatically-worded way of saying "How are you going to keep them from raping people?" because it could just as easily be understood to imply that the government is already responsible for assigning sexual partners to people and I'm not sure I would put it past the British government to try that and the British people to allow it. Meh, Chicago's doing fine. Heyjackass.com reports shot and killed to date this year is up only 16% over 2025. And of course this is attributable to the ease with which shooters buy scary gunzz in nearby Indiana. So it's not really a criminal or violence or cultural or law enforcement problem, it's a gun control problem. Glad I could clear that up.

Posted by: runner at May 11, 2026 06:30 PM (GD0B3) The dumbest thing you can do, as much as I like self-checkout, is to go to an all-self checkout model. I’ve seen Wally World try it in Lubbock and Amarillo and was not impressed. You need both options. Self checkout is good for 10 items or less. Cashiers are good for larger orders and the whiners and complainers who hate self checkout because they aren’t store employees (they wouldn’t survive three seconds in Germany: you bring your own bags and bag your own groceries; don’t like it? Walgreens spent decades embedding itself as the neighborhood prescription hub, helped wipe out independent pharmacy options, and trained seniors and chronic-care patients to rely on them. Once you build that dependency, you don’t get to shrug and say “not profitable enough” like you were only selling chips and greeting cards. What the heck are they stealing? Everything in my Walgreens is locked down like Fort Knox and I live on the North Side. I've stopped shopping at walgreens all together because the prices are insane. The convenience is just not worth it What convenience? You gotta wait for someone to get you the things you need that are locked up, then wait 20 min in line again. Was about to buy sleeping pills from Walgreens out of convenience. Saw the price was $22 for the same bottle I pay $12 for at Walmart. So I just ordered from Walmart plus and got free delivery same day I don't understand why anyone would shop at Walgreens. The markup is so high that it surpasses the 80% retail margin rule. They are robbing you. Posted by: Intercepted Reddit Transmissions brought by the Intrepid AoS Liaison at May 11, 2026 06:50 PM (ycI94) 250

My biggest complaint about self checkout is that my bags won't fit on the stupid, tiny carousel. I use pretty big bags, and there is no way to place them on the carousel in a stable way.
I take my own bags, because I like the shape of them, and I can fit a bunch in them, and it's easier to carry into the house from the car. I like to pack them myself, because I know what goes where in the house. Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at May 11, 2026 06:46 PM (zYpTz) Bring some amazon boxes too and lie down the bags in them as they fill up and start another layer. Build a mountain. I assume that is intentional to keep the self service lanes flowing since the per item rate is likely slower. Posted by: Oldcat at May 11, 2026 06:51 PM (8avO+) 254

No. There's a difference between a 'Service' and 'Graciousness'. For your analogy to work, I'd need to be assisting the store stockers not the other patrons. Posted by: garrett at May 11, 2026 06:43 PM (xkXS7) You are working overtime to refuse to see it. I should check “graciousness” at the door because I am not on the store payroll, according to you. (And I bet you are one of the many assholes I have to pick up after because you decide you don’t want something so you will leave a package of, say, hamburger, in the cereal aisle, thinking “someone else will pick this up, it’s not my job”.) You are a “it’s not my job, fuck everybody else” kind of person. Probably just leaves the cart wherever in the parking lot too. Service supersedes graciousness in your world. It’s sad, really. Self checkouts only work in high trust systems. It's way too easy for someone to scan every other item and leave a lot in the cart, especially when the store only has one or two employees watching the entire store, which today seems like what most of the stores do.

Last weekend we got stuck behind an older couple who paid for their really large purchase writing 3 checks from 3 separate accounts. I have become more patient over the years, but that REALLY tested me.
Posted by: Pug Mahon, Not Exactly Streets Ahead at May 11, 2026 07:10 PM (0aYVJ) I was behind someone who made a mistake on the check, sloooooowly scribbled it out and corrected it, made sure she initialed it...'bout sent me over the edge. I'd have just voided the thing and written a new one. Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at May 11, 2026 07:17 PM (zYpTz) 336
I can understand why you had to become a teacher. You are obviously too retarded to do anything else for a living.
Posted by: garrett at May 11, 2026 07:13 PM (xkXS7) You’d learn something in my class you don’t have here. Like writing skills. Really, go read a book. You might learn better insults than “retarded”. What, you gonna call me a retard again like an asshole with a grade school mentality? Better I be a teacher, which is an honorable living, than be a bureaucrat for the Department of Redundancy Department. Fuck off to under the rock, asshole. My MIL recently gave me her checkbook to get something at a drive thru.(!) I looked at the register and it was from 1999.

All I'm saying which I think you know but I'm repeating it anyway because I do that - by letting them steal your time they're overcharging you again. I have no objection to you or anyone refusing to play their game but all I'm saying is it's more cost to you if you value your time.
Posted by: ... at May 11, 2026 06:45 PM (vE0+H) Unless the reduction in wages and benefits for several fewer employees help keep the prices you pay at the checkout down. But most people don't see that cost and consider it "non-existant" When the cost of wages (or increased benefits and compliance costs) go up, there is something called "deadweight loss". This is a reaction by a customer service side of a business to reduce the costs to compensate for the increased cost of doing business. It is shown by reduced customer experience jobs and services. This is why there are no long gas pump attendants, or box boys or clean bathrooms, aisles, and landscaping for places that used to be pretty nice and now tend to look grim. The alternative is to raise prices on goods and services, and unfortunately most places the customers are very sensitive on pricing, and move to cheaper brands or cheaper stores. Self checkout and self-serve pumps are a victim of minimum wage, minimum benefit, and compliance costs above the price of goods. Most retail places operate on a razor thin margin with little tolerance for jacking prices up
