Posted by: Heroq at May 14, 2026 10:33 AM (4G08c) Or leftist Democrats cheat in primaries and leftist Republicans cheat in primaries. That would look like what you describe. Posted by: ... at May 14, 2026 10:48 AM (ZLe8E) If you blame bad outcomes on cheating, you’ll never change things. Turnout for primaries in my county is 25-30%. Turnout for president trial elections is 70-75%. Trump got 65% of the vote in 2024. It’s very conservative. Leftists use turnout to their advantage. They even campaign on this issue saying your vote matters a lot because so few people vote in primaries. They are well organized and well funded. And so we have a 65-35 area with a hard left mayor, a hard left city council, and a state reps who crow about how they expanded “access to health care and education”. It’s not cheating. It’s their side shows up ours doesn’t. When turnout is so low if a majority of the minority leftists shows up they win. They do this over and over. For county seats, for city council for mayor and for state reps. Posted by: Heroq at May 14, 2026 10:57 AM (4G08c) 253

hahahahaha Posted by: r hennigantx at May 14, 2026 11:27 AM (/+uur) Not quite. Grabby Abby didn't veto the massive union raises to balance the budget. Interesting. It makes me wonder if finding a solution to Yellow Fever was prioritized over malaria or if malaria is just much harder to find a solution for since it isn't a bacteria or virus.
Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at May 14, 2026 11:26 AM (lFFaq) Malaria is caused by a plasmodium that changes its surface proteins to avoid the immune response. Current treatments tend to be palliative, but fairly effective. The problem is that shifting coat. Posted by: Kindltot at May 14, 2026 11:31 AM (rbvCR) 338

The water was intended to be a barrier to scorpions and other vermin, and it works for that. The role of mosquitos in spreading yellow fever and malaria was unknown, and the doctor who correctly saw a link was initially treated as a crank. I believe yellow fever is credited with destroying the earlier French effort at a canal, and most likely would have doomed the American project as well.
Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug === IIRC one or the earlier American engineers didn't like walking in the mud so had good drainage work done in the main campus. Took care of 90% of the mosquito transmission problems right there even if the disease vector wasn't known yet. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at May 14, 2026 11:32 AM (/lPRQ) 345

Do you have Apple TV? If so, check out "Widow's Bay". The story concerns the new mayor of the small island Widow's Bay whop wants to convert it into the next Martha's Vineyard. However- The locals are dragging their feet because "bad things" happen there and the island has now awakened once again. The start is a slow burn uneasy comedy that builds nicely every episode until you get the wonderfully clever horror of Episode 4. It's really well done. If WB keeps topping itself at this pace, it may be the best thing on streaming evah! Who knows but we'll see. If you like creepy but not particularly bloody horror, check this one out, you'll love it. Posted by: naturalfake at May 14, 2026 11:33 AM (iJfKG) 351

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at May 14, 2026 11:27 AM (BI5O2) I have spent my entire life watching people pretend by acting in a certain way they can fit in and be content. Some of them are just joiners who have no real basis in life, and some are desperately trying to pretend they are normal, and some are trying to bury their own pain by being someone else. A lot of them are really irritating, and tragically lost in their own lives, but as long as they don't threaten me or dribble anything on me . . . AND TURN THE VOLUME DOWN AFTER 10PM DAMMIT . . . I don't really care. Even I am wound up in the pageantry of who I want to be, I think it keeps me from being the monster I could be if I didn't care. If you blame bad outcomes on cheating, you’ll never change things. -------- Unless you work to stop the cheating! I agree with you in principle but even considering "turnout" numbers this is way past sore loser talk. There is a reason R's aren't interested in stopping the cheat and it's because they benefit (and have benefitted) from it. If you have a more cogent explanation for that I'm all ears. I certainly dont blame everything on the cheat. There is also the fact that leftard D's know their candidates will do what they say they're going to do and will represent them. We have no such thing on our side. Our candidates are skeevy and lie to us. Their candidates are skeevy and lie to everyone equally. Posted by: ... at May 14, 2026 11:39 AM (ZLe8E) 370

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at May 14, 2026 11:34 AM (lFFaq) Dengue is another nasty one, and the problem with the two is that it takes two infections on average to be fatal, the first one just acts like the flu and primes the body for a massive immune response for the second bout that carries you off. I think some of the insights in Covid are leading some of the research into treatments for Yellow Fever and Dengue. Previously it was all prevention through inoculation, which is sort of a problem. I have heard stories about barracks of soldiers laid out for a couple of days after the Yellow Fever shot trying to recover. Posted by: Kindltot at May 14, 2026 11:41 AM (rbvCR) 382

Tinicum Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, is home to the Lazaretto, the oldest surviving quarantine hospital in the United States. Built in 1799, it was established in response to devastating yellow fever epidemics in Philadelphia and served as a vital checkpoint for ships entering the Port of Philadelphia.
After brutal yellow fever outbreaks devastated Philadelphia in 1793 and 1798—forcing the national government to flee—the state built the Lazaretto on Tinicum Island. It was completed in 1799 and operated until the 1890s. All ships bound for Philadelphia were required to stop at the Lazaretto. Passengers and crew were screened for infectious diseases like yellow fever and typhus, while infested cargo was fumigated or destroyed. Sick individuals were brought ashore to the hospital. Despite the severity of the diseases, the facility managed an impressive survival rate (around 78% for yellow fever and 95% for typhus) largely due to palliative care and clean nursing. Before Ellis Island, the Lazaretto served as the primary port of entry and a quarantine checkpoint for thousands of immigrants.
