The Local Apparatchik

Like the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, we're having an outsized impact. In the case of climate, we are not the dinosaurs. We are the meteor. We are not only in danger. We are the danger. But we are also the solution.

-- Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations; June 5, 2024

Like most "world leaders" - and all of the globalist and large NGO leaders - Guterres aspires to be a Bond villain. The arrogance and histrionics aside, Guterres and those like him are in essence very easy to understand: they are tyrants. The hubris and hysteria are an act in the service of increasing their power and control. They do not do it themselves. Their fortunes are delivered by the small-time locals who move the ball when commanded. Large or small, they believe everyone and everything must be brought to heel to build their utopia. Free expression, free action, individual prerogatives and everything else must not be permitted if they interfere with immanentizing the eschaton.

n the same speech as the one quoted above, Guterres went further and called for the outright destruction of free speech:

I urge every country to ban advertising from fossil fuel companies ... I urge news media and tech companies to stop taking fossil fuel advertising
This is all just so much noise - at least directly - as the BBC points out. The BBC also, however, points out the real purpose of such statements:
Mr Guterres' call for an outright ban on all fossil fuel advertising goes further - but it has no legal standing, and the UN has no means of enforcing the idea.
However, it will be seen as a boost for campaigners who have fought against sponsorship and advertising from coal, oil and gas companies.

Indeed. These were marching orders, and it is why, two years later, the frothing, hysterical shrieking from a faceless and interchangeable UN bigwig is suddenly relevant. Allies and conspirators in the campaign to destroy the fuel of human life never sleep. Every rabid outburst from the front men and every dry, scientifically bankrupt research paper from its academic organs all serve to provide direction to the local apparatchik. Every action helps set the stage for the local operators.

We can find an example just this week. The city of Amsterdam is, as the New York Times puts it, "permissive" - but "permissiveness" goes only so far. There are some things Amsterdam frowns upon, so it will protect you from the real menaces of the world: the menaces of meat and oil.

On May 1, Amsterdam became the world's first capital city to ban ads for fossil fuel products and meat. It's part of the city's efforts to discourage consumption of goods linked with high carbon emissions.

Ads for airlines, cruises, and faraway destinations are no longer allowed because they implicitly promote the burning of fossil fuels. Ads for beef, chicken, pork and fish are also banned because of the environmental harms caused by animal agriculture.

On May Day. Of course. A fitting new law for the day of communist self-aggrandizement. But don't worry - dairy is still protected speech, for now:
... the advertising prohibition was initially written to include all food derived from animals, including dairy. But a compromise was struck to limit the ban to meat products, and it helped secure a majority vote.
The very essence of democracy in action! It is not, of course, merely a ban on advertising nefarious products, there is also the requisite propaganda in the opposite direction:
Amsterdam is also pushing its citizens to eat less meat, and has set a goal for residents to get 60 percent of their protein from plant-based sources by 2030. "Because of climate reasons, because of health reasons," said Anke Bakker, a city councilor with Party for the Animals.

Amsterdam is not the first. The leading light in this fight was The Hague, which banned energy advertising in 2024, shortly after Guterres' speech. The inevitable lawsuit followed in 2025, and the Dutch travel trade association and various travel agents sued the city. Predictably, they lost - and the judge's reasoning should send chills down the spine of any reader:

It is not up to the municipality to refrain from taking measures to promote the health of its residents in order to strengthen the future position of travel providers.
It is not the municipality's role to refrain from censorship. It is not their place to refrain from oppression. Not when it comes to "health" or similar, however tortured to justify the action. And this rationale is particularly ironic in Amsterdam's case. The head goblin who pushed for the new ban, from a party called "GreenLeft," apparently said the following with a straight face:
Ms. Veenhoff likened high carbon lifestyles to an addiction. "If you're trying to get rid of an addiction, it's not very handy to see it everywhere," she said.
In the city known the world over for its easy access to drugs and whores, the real risks to health and the true drivers of addiction are meat and energy. The mind fairly boggles.

Beware the hysterical hyperbole and absurd demands of the global tyrants. They beat the drum and frame the argument to set the stage for the real villains: petty little communists like Veenhoff, who methodically, one district at a time, implement the schemes to destroy their people's rights - which means, of course, to destroy their people.

If they really believed this, they'd close their borders to third-worlders and then do everything to extract resources out of the third world to limit their ability to grow economically while limited the population that actually uses the resources to the steadily dwindling European population.

Heck, they might even support killing a bunch of third worlders since they keep breeding so much.

Do they really believe climate change is an eschatological and apocalyptic issue or not?

Remember, all special elections that prove Democratic overperformance are to be considered gospel and all special elections that prove Republican overperformance are considered to be junk.

Your point was GOP voter apathy.

Indiana GOP voters just proved that they didn't have apathy, that they had clear targets and took them out. It directly addressed your blackpilling, but it's not valid because...?

I've been saying for months. Dems will probably win the House. It's just turnout differentials that play out in midterms. Out of power parties just perform better. It happened under Obama. Remember when there were "only Obama" voters? And it happens to a smaller degree under Trump (the 2018 "blowout" saw the GOP gain 3 senate seats).

125 In my local elections there’s a battle afoot between RINOs and conservatives in the upcoming primaries for state seats. It’s two factions battling it out. They even have co-ordinated yard signs between the two groups for different candidates. The GOP primary winner is the defacto general election winner.

This area voted for Trump yuuugely. But turnout is pathetically low for primaries and local elections. For some reason conservatives refuse to vote in them. So left wingers run everything locally. Turnout is 25%, if they get their side out to vote at 50% they win. They figured out they can steal primary races too if they get their side out knowing the right will sit out the “non important” elections.

They may just pull off a coup.

It is a huge mental upheaval when your world view is shown to be false. I remember in 2008 when I realized "no the FNM does not just heavily spin the facts for the Ds, they smother inconvenient facts and make up lies to advance their party." It threw me for a loop and I already knew the media sided with the Dems, I just thought that the desire to have the scoop and be the first to air a story was in play. I didn't realize until 2008-2009 that almost all of the media had an unwritten agreement not to air the wrong kind of stories, or to tattle on their colleagues when a blatant lie was told.

There is always a correlation, which could prove to be meaningless if the factors involved stay the same. But if those factors do not stay the same and change, there may or may not be an impact to the end result. That is, for those of you at home, there could be a pattern or turnout in special elections that somehow correlates into a general election. It could be that it is minute and meaningless to the end result. But there you have it. It’s there. And yet you say without any basis, special elections have no impact on the general. ======

25% turnout is a different electorate than 75% turnout.

If you take all the special elections and do statistical analysis on them...they do not predict the next general election because of the massive change in turnout.

This happens year after year after year.

Let me show you an example:

https://is.gd/oZRAp3

This is the OH-6 special election from 2024.

It showed Republicans underperforming the previous regular election by over 20 points.

Was this predictive of the general a few months later? Of the national environment?

It wasn't. The district went right back to the 2022 levels in Nov of 2024 and Republicans nationally did better in 2024 than 2022.

Why was that not predictive?

My take on many of these special elections is that they just show the base levels of fraud the left can count on.

Why are more Ds votes being registered in the special elections? Because the Ds don't have to actually rouse their voters, they just get the people that submit the stacks of ballots to do so.

This is less effective in elections with higher voter turnout because the lazy Dems and Reps show up and vote and the fake Dem votes are a lower percentage of the final totals.

284 Fukushima is a name known to anyone only because they placed the conventional back-up power sources (for cooling) down near sea level instead of up where the reactors are. Geological assumptions given to designers (in late 1950s) underestimated tsunami magnitude range. Quake did not damage the reactors.

All this as far as I recall. It was a classic example of a dumbed down world showing how dumb it was (the hysteria). Utility provided a hook for the dim bulbs by not being transparent at the start.

Gemany's nuke shutdown following remains the most idiotic deliberate action by a modern country since WWII - and that's an increasingly stiff competition.

All I know is that every time the GOP overperforms in a special election, it's an outlier than needs to be dismissed and that every time a Democrat overperforms in a special election it's purely predictive about where we will go for sure.

Two things:

1. Special elections are not predictive. They never have been and they never will be because 15% turnout and 75% turnout are different electorates. The 15 isn't a random sample of the 75 and cannot predict what the 75 will do.

2. I've said for months that I think Democrats will take the House. A minor majority of 5-10 seats. Senate should stay the same, though. Senate elections drive turnout in the states that have them to presidential levels so they reflect PVI pretty closely.

Putting a parking garage on top of a building requires extra space and material for the access ramp unless you have a handy hill next to your building that you can just bridge from. Japan does have a fair number of hills to build next to.

Putting a parking garage under a building, while it does make the building more vulnerable to terrorist demolition, also maximizes the retail space in the building above it, and if you're dumb enough to build on a flood plain, assists in preventing water damage to said retail spaces.

372 Tokyo is built on the Kanto plain, so I imagine that's a big consideration for them.

Tokyo, allegedly, has massive drainage and flood control vaults all under the city. Like, "could contain most of the water in Tokyo Bay" massive.

I guess I just have that song inextricably linked with Love in my mind.

Well, considering Love's Bryan McLean wrote it, yeah.

375 Putting a parking garage under a building, while it does make the building more vulnerable to terrorist demolition, also maximizes the retail space in the building above it...

I wonder what the per-area weight load is for garage space compared to retail, living, or office space. Especially with EVs. Although that raises the question of EV fires which would likely be less dangerous on a top floor than a bottom. Lots of considerations and trade-offs.

380 I just envision somebody running out of a building during an earthquake and getting hit by a car that just rolled off the 5th story.

This is a good answer, but not terrorism. earthquakes.

The problem with a parking garage on the bottom is that they would have to go around the columns and that is very difficult.

US often build with what is called a "weak story" that collapses in an earthquake from shear load. There is also the problem of height and fire -- fire laws make it difficult to put underneath, and height is limited.

383 I would imagine that putting a garage under a building as opposed to above it is largely an aesthetic consideration. It's not pleasant to look at a skyline and see a bunch of parking garages. Also if you're investing in high-floor office or residential space as a status symbol (which it is), would you rather know you're on the highest floor in the building or know that you're under six stories of...cars?

Like C19, I'm becoming more suspicious the intention is actually to nudge residents - the neediest in particular - from NYC to Pennsylvania.

It's been the pattern for decades.
-----
As of early 2026, Pennsylvania continues to be a top destination for New Yorkers looking for a lower cost of living and more space, with the Philadelphia metro area and eastern Pennsylvania remaining popular spots. Driven by high taxes and affordability issues in New York, thousands have made the move and stayed, with some moving to the Keystone State to secure larger homes and a lower cost of living, while retaining relatively easy access to NYC.
