For tonight's musicians birthdays, you get three bassists. They also do other things, but that's the common theme. You don't have to hunt for it.
First is Darryl Hunt of The Pogues, who was born on this date in 1950 and passed on August 8, 2022. He started out as the band's roadie, took over as bassist when Cait O'Riordan left in 1986, and even had sole writing credit for a track on their final album, Pogue Mahone (1996): The Pogues - Love You 'Till the End (2006 Remaster) [Audio] https://youtu.be/bbrMw89di2k Mike Dirnt, who turned 54 today, is co-founder, bassist, and backing vocalist for Green Day. No deep cut here; for a showcase, Brave AI recommended their first major-label single (off their 1994 breakout third studio album Dookie), where his iconic bassline is the song's primary hook: Green Day - Longview [Official Music Video] (4K Upgrade) https://youtu.be/42BBdzzgPNM It's also the 57th birthday for Chuck Folds, younger brother of Ben (of the Ben Folds Five). He played bass for a Greensboro, NC band, and here's a nice chill jazzy pop track off their second album, A Little Faster (1993): Bus Stop - Come Back Home (Audio) https://youtu.be/B2rve2gbMQ8 Posted by: SciVo at May 05, 2026 01:30 AM (Sy6m/) 40

I believe I've mentioned before that my inlaws bought a washer/dryer when they bought the house. That one lasted around 50 years (a couple of repairs along the way... these were Sears Kenmore and Sears used to keep parts forever). Finally the tranny went out (which has nothing to do with Dylan Mulvaney's Saturday night). Sears was bankrupt by then. No parts to be had. Second one lasted about 4 years. Current one has two years on it. We'll see how long it lasts.

On the appliance thing - I talk about this when I am addressing audiences in the cyber security area (I work in insurance) - I usually say: "I don't want my appliance to be 'smart!' I don't want it connected to the internet - why the hell does my washing machine need to surf the WWW? Wth? Its just another threat vector for cyber criminals. No, don't give me a 'smart' appliance give me a 'stupid' one. I want my washing machine to do one thing: wash clothes. Period. end of story."
And frankly, between the hord and me, let's get rid of the computer circuit board on all appliances, let's go back to analog toggles, switches and dials. I suggested to a friend recently that we should start a company for appliances called "Just Appliances Ltd." That makes appliances like washing machine designed with similar workings (modern materials safety etc.) to those of the 1970s. They would be retro/analog and simply "just" wash or "just" refrigerate or "just" dry etc. Posted by: Publius Redux at May 05, 2026 01:49 AM (/aZwr) Posted by: Don in SoCo at May 05, 2026 01:49 AM (rzCjW) 61

Trump urges S Korea to join in on Project Freedom * Asked about Iranian sea mines in Hormuz, Centcom’s Cooper said “it’s not so extensive” * Trump on TS “We’ve shot down seven small Boats or, as they like to call them, ‘fast’ Boats" that attempted to interfere * Trump to Fox: if Iran attacks any US ships around the Strait of Hormuz, they will be “blown off the face of the earth.” * 2 people injured in Oman, on its coast along the Strait , when a residential building was targeted (state media) Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at May 05, 2026 02:02 AM (NaHHR) 73

My parents had an old International Harvester deep freezer. Man, that thing could hold A LOT of stuff! Was grandma's, but then she moved to a smaller house & had no room for it.
There was a power outage, and then it wouldn't come back on. Surprised Dad didn't repair it, I'm sure it was just a motor/capacitor issue. Maybe couldn't find parts? Mom was heartbroken-- that freezer could hold a half-beef, cut & wrapped, plus other goodies... Posted by: JQ at May 05, 2026 02:08 AM (rdVOm) 78
The one thing I didn't do is match the appliances. Some people go with one brand for everything. Years of doing kitchens and baths in a former life taught me that some companies just can't make certain appliances for shit. Some make great stoves, other make great dishwashers, etc. As long as every piece was the same color I was good. What used to be good isn't good anymore. I remember my mom having a kitchen aid dishwasher that was made by hobart. My father did that kitchen in 1970, and that dishwasher went over 30 years and was still working when he removed it to do a new kitchen in the early 90's. I went through 3 dishwashers in 30 years starting on 1990 when I did the kitchen in my first house. By the time I sold it 5 years ago it was on the 3rd, and the second stove, and was just about ready for the 3rd fridge. When I did this kitchen a few years ago I called my brother to see what was good since he's still doing kitchens. He says, "buy what you want, just get the insurance because everything is shit". Ok, that was a lot of help. lol

There's no need to go back to complicated mechanical timers, etc.
Electronics are not intrinsically less reliable or long lived as mechanical parts. Just keep the marketing guys in check demanding "features" and a simple control board with reliable relays can be produced cheaper than mechanical parts doing the same thing that will last 25 years. The DOJ has ONE WEEK left to charge Anthony Fauci for the worst cover-up in modern medical history. He lied to Congress about funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Millions died. Trillions were spent. And Fauci walked away with book deals and fawning media coverage instead of handcuffs. I re-upped my criminal referral to the DOJ because the evidence is overwhelming, and justice has been delayed long enough. RT if you’re ready to see Fauci behind bars. New York Post columnist Miranda Devine reveals that old Twitter leadership worked with the FBI so closely to suppress the Hunter Biden Laptop story, that they classified all links to the story as “child porn” to stop it from being shared
“It was completely blacklisted on Twitter in 2 hours. It was classified as child porn internally, if you like, sent it in a private, like if I DM'd you privately, the link, it would disable as it would if you were sending something criminal. The reason why it was so immediate and so severe was because the FBI was briefing Twitter executives” This would instantly flag the DMs and stop them from being sent, it would make the links inactive She also reveals that the FBI knew about the laptop all the way back before the first Trump impeachment Literally treason. No one in old Twitter has been held accountable either --- That's why they want to kill Giuliani, he has a copy of the original HD. Blonde Morticia it's a pertinent question. And you're not the only one asking it.
My preferred, and assumed, strategery here was to pause (ceasefire) to rest, resupply, and augment our forces (this has been done, and it's a pretty massive fist we have). Meanwhile, the blockade would do its thing, along with the global financial assault on Iranian assets. Finally, force the Strait open, forcing Iran to try to respond militarily - this leading to a comprehensive degradation of their anti-shipping capabilities. Thus shredding their only remaining "card". Things track with the above, so far. Question is will we (my preference) use Iranian interference in the Strait as the go-signal to obliterate their last significant remaining kinetic tool*. Or continue with the dance - downplaying attacks as long they're thwarted or blunted, bluster about destroying their military, with very limited military response. We're all about to find out. * ballistic missiles remain a threat to the region, but a crude and largely ineffective one to date Posted by: rhomboid at May 05, 2026 02:46 AM (U/Byj) 112
