Evening and morning, Sunday toilers and early risers! It's the first Sunday of May, and we have an unheard-of 60 F. w/ 66% humidity and almost no wind. This is more like February in Da Swamp. Amazin'.
Also, last night I found out what has been fascinating Stirling recently. He's been hanging around my bedroom, near the nightstand, and I figured there's a gecko or a roach or something that's gotten in. Well. I moved the litter box in the process of scooping it out . . . and there was a dark gray mouse! It got past Stirling -- I don't think Dagny has noticed it -- and under my bathroom door. So now it's loose in the apartment (which it probably has been all along). I hope Stirling catches it soon, and does NOT leave the corpse in one of my slippers. 23 Police officer spends an hour talking a man off bridge with prayer. From " NY Post":
https://tinyurl.com/2tfrjsmr Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 03, 2026 05:23 AM (2sfNr) I remember last summer taking a bus across the tallest bridge in this city (the Aurora Bridge, 167 ft above the water), traffic was slow, and I saw a guy sitting on the fence with some emergency responders talking to him. A while later I was taking the bus home, and was just in time to see him coming down and just sit on the ground with his back to the fence near one of the responders. To this day, I still remember the look on his face as he sat there - this odd combination of utterly deflated yet at peace. (I'm sure most of that was probably the adrenaline wearing off, but still...) I was so glad that I got to see that he'd chosen life. Posted by: Bitblt at May 03, 2026 06:51 AM (11pZm) 46

Tofu Dreg engineering?
The chief engineer behind the Three Gorges dam has been indicted by Chinese authorities. In a remote part of China, a 50-year-old high pressure water steel pipe from a small dam failed catastrophically killing 4. This whole system had passed a safety inspection last year. Posted by: Anna Puma at May 03, 2026 06:53 AM (2GVsD) --- In this case I wonder if it was the fault of the engineer or the fault of the safety inspectors who gave the dam a passing grade. Or some combination of both. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at May 03, 2026 06:55 AM (gnNyN) 50

Chrissy Amphlett, lead singer for Divinyls, was killed by breast cancer, an outcome which thankfully happens far less frequently than it did a generation ago. The same disease killed my mother in law, her sister and her own mother, so my wife gets a little nervous, but she has been spared, and we are grateful.
