I wouldn't hang a Benton painting but I enjoy looking at them. It's fun to see what is included and how the people are posed. This one was requested by Tex Ritter to show te many influences of country music from church/gospel, to cowboys to square dancing and more. The people are dressed for each type with the bare dulcimer player for at home music, the women in bonnets for the church choir, the cowboy with his single guitar, the banjo player might be a (former?) slave, the fiddlers in overalls and the dancers in 'country best', etc. The steam boat, telegraph poles and steam locomotive help set the sense of time. And it is all bright but not garish, light with a sense of enjoyment and life and movement.
It's a wonderfully effective painting. Posted by: JTB at May 08, 2026 09:56 AM (yTvNw) 105

In Kansas City you can visit Benton's house and studio. He had a unique way of working on his Cinerama-style murals: he'd make a shadow box, using chicken wire and papier-mache to mock up all the figures, so that he could watch how their perspective size and angles changed as the viewpoint moved. Lot of work. He didn't usually save them after the painting, but there are a few. He was a folk musician, as well. Made albums.
Both he and Grant Wood worked on Navy dazzle paint schemes in WWI. I tried to make a little something of that, but the pretty-well-grounded art major docent was sure they'd both completed a lot of old school classical training before the drafting experience with Large Ships. This painting was featured in the Country Music documentary with Ken Burns. It was very representative of the history of the music that was brought from Europe and Africa ,passed down and then reworked into the classics and long forgotten tunes of today. The Carter family patriarch drove hundreds of miles visiting the people living in the hills to gather songs, write them down, and then record them. Such as Will the circle be Unbroken. That documentary was fascinating and very educational for country music lovers.

Jeff Foxworthy closed the CMAs years ago with this:
"I started thinking about why I like country music and doing this show so much, and here's what I came up with, y'all. "I like country music because it's about the things in life that really matter. It ain't about braggin' about how you're gonna mess somebody up, or how somebody ain't respectin' ya. It's about love, family, friends -- with a few beers, a cheap woman and a two-timin' man thrown in for spice. It doesn't take political sides, even with things as ugly as war. Instead, it celebrates the brave men and women who go to fight 'em, the price they pay to do it and the longin' we have for them to return home to the ones that they love. "It's about kids and how there ain't nothin' like 'em. I get tired of hearin' about how bad kids are today, because there are a lot of great kids out there that just need somebody to love 'em and believe in 'em. Country folks love their kids and they will jack you up if you try to mess with 'em! --- Posted by: Lizzy at May 08, 2026 10:34 AM (8Fxbo) 215

"People in country music don't forget the people that allow them to do what they do for a livin'. They sign autographs and they take pictures with the fans because they know without 'em most of us entertainers would be gettin' a lot dirtier in the course of our workday. We are thankful that people want to hear the songs and the jokes that we write. Country music doesn't have to be politically correct. We sing about God because we believe in Him. We are not trying to offend anybody, but the evidence that we have seen of Him in our small little lives trumps your opinion about whether or not He exists. "We love country music because it touches us where we live. It's about mommas, and when they were hot, and when they are unappreciated, and when they were dyin'. It's about daddies and the difficulties they have sometimes at tellin' the people that they work so hard to protect and provide for how they feel about 'em. "Country music is about new love and it's about old love. It's about gettin' drunk and gettin' sober. It's about leavin' and it's about comin' home. It's real music sung by real people for real people, the people that make up the backbone of this country." Posted by: Lizzy at May 08, 2026 10:35 AM (8Fxbo) 220

212 Most drug addiction was deliberately imposed by governments. After the major infantry wars, crippled-up veterans would line city streets, begging and in agony. This was bad for business. Opium first, and then a long string of scientifically improved ('this time it's not addictive") replacements, were doled out to shut them up.

The Sources of Country Music
Thomas Hart Benton Cute with a theme. Wikiart,in part, In 1973, at the age of 84, Thomas Hart Benton was asked to paint a mural for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. He was encouraged to take on the ambitious project by famous country music singer, Tex Ritter, who suggested that he paint a large visual summary of the roots of country music. The result was The Sources of Country Music (1975), a large multifigure composition that presents five distinct scenes describing the music of ordinary Americans. The central motif is a barn dance with two fiddlers and a group of square dancers, which represent the dominant music of the American frontier. On the upper left of the painting, three women dressed for Sunday church sing with hymnals in their hands, emphasizing the importance of church music in Protestant America. In front of the church choir, he painted two barefoot mountain women that sing and play the dulcimer – a string instrument associated with the music of the Appalachian region in America. On the right, Benton added an armed cowboy singer strumming his guitar, an homage to Tex Ritter. ... Reading all suggested.
