The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

IMG_4672.PNG

[H/T: The Fabulous]

*****

If I would have wanted your opinion. I would have asked for it.

This is what happens when you quit coffee for just two weeks: Scientists reveal surprising effects on stress, sleep and memory

*****

Hrothgar submitted this to me. I say we should pray for him. Pray Hard.

Before we enter the Prayer Revival. Just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Shiocton)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2) Be kind. Be nice.
3) Running with sharp objects is seriously frowned upon. Don't.
4) Have a great weekend!

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

3/10 – Update on Susan, who we have been praying for as she battles cancer. She is hospitalized again with an infection in her colon that quickly turned bad. The doctor says the signs are sepsis but they are running tests to make sure. The good news is that the pancreatic cancer was and is responding to the chemo and her cancer numbers are going down. God bless and thank you!
3/23 Update – Susan finally was able to come home. She is doing better than expected. Thanks to everyone for your prayers.
4/18 Update – Susan is doing outstanding. Her weight is better than expected. They have increased her dosage for chemo, and her cancer numbers are the lowest they have been since they started keeping track of them. They are so thankful for the mercy they have received. Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and prayers.

3/14 – Retired Buckeye Cop asks for prayers for Mrs. Cop’s cousin, “A.B”. He has been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. He is a retired police officer who was hit by a car years ago. He attempted to deal with the pain by self-medicating with too much Tylenol, which ended up poisoning his liver. His only alternative is a liver transplant, but he is uncertain if he wants to have surgery.
4/11 Update – A.B. got a second opinion and testing determined his live score was 15. (21+ means transplant time.) That’s bad, but not as critical as initially thought. He went to the Cleveland Clinic for a third opinion, and testing found that his score had dropped to 9 and a liver transplant was not even something to consider. The doctor suspected a reaction to Ozempic and told him to stop taking it for 6 months.

3/21 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her son, who is still looking for work. He has a horticulture major, and would ideally like something related to research, but he is certainly willing to labor outdoors.
4/10 Update – FenelonSpoke’s son got a job. She sends her thanks to everyone who prayed on this thread here and elsewhere.

3/28 – Hrothgar asked for prayers for a dear and long time close friend and former neighbor, Daniel, who is scheduled for open heart surgery in mid-April. Prayers for his wife would be appreciated as well, as she will be carrying a heavy load for the next few months.
4/18 Update – Daniel survived his complex open heart surgery. He is sitting up and it seems like it went well, but they are not going to release him as quickly as he would like, so he is not happy. Thanks to the Horde for the prayers and please keep praying for his dear wife, who now has even more to put up with.

3/28 – Jordan61 posted that Mr. Jordan61 is back in the hospital. His sepsis has returned and gotten into where his compression fracture is, and he has vertebral osteomyelitis. The doctor is supposed to come in today and let them know the plan.
4/9 Update – On 4/1 Mr. Jordan61 was released from the hospital with six weeks of IV antibiotics, which Jordan61 is administering every 8 hours. He’s in a lot of pain; they’ve given him oxy, fentanyl, and dilaudid, and nothing seems to touch it. From what they were told, the pain won’t subside until the infection is cleared up. For the time being, he is bed-bound and they are limiting his movement as much as possible to keep the pain to a minimum. Jordan61 will send updates with progress.
4/25 Update – Mr. Jordan61 is making slow but steady progress. He can get up and walk for short periods of time, and can sit in the living room for an hour or so per day. He is halfway through the IV antibiotics, with 3 weeks to go. A physical therapist will be coming to help him build strength and learn how to move without aggravating his back injury. Thank you all for the prayers!

4/3 – Teresa in Fort Worth posted an update. Her chemo seems to be holding things steady for now. Unfortunately, as she is receiving a steroid, she has gained about 25 pounds. Her blood sugar has also jumped up about 40 points (which only happens when she is on steroids).
4/24 Update – Teresa in Fort Worth provided an update: The pump that was put in to battle cancer in December can only be used for 6 months. After that, it starts to damage the liver. So she may have to go back onto the medication that made her lose her hair and messed up her vision and nails, and then return to this medication after a break. This is not good news, since this new medication is working so well. But for now, she is doing well and is incredibly grateful for the time that she has been given so far.

4/4 – Reforger posted that his wife’s father passed away on 4/3. After a 50 year battle with Hep C, he fell and broke his neck. He lasted about a month, in and out of induced comas, and now the pain is over. Reforger lost his father on Holy Saturday (years ago) and now his wife lost her father on Good Friday.

4/11 – Eromero craves prayers for Mrs. E., as she has been diagnosed with lymphoma. She begins infusions on 4/23.
4/25 Update – Mrs. E. reports that she feels fine. Praise be to God that she has had only one distressful episode during the infusions. Thank you for all the past and continued prayers.

4/18 – Vmom deport deport deport asked for prayers for Captain Whitebread, who is back in ICU with a leg infection that sounds very serious. She also asked for prayers for her husband’s mental and emotional well-being as he faces transition of a possible forced retirement in 3 months.
4/29 Update Captain Whitebread’s son posted that Captain Whitebread had several more infections and passed away on 4/29.

4/18 – Warai-otoko offered a prayer of thanksgiving that he got a new job that he is really enjoying. Wifey also got an offer for a new job that sounds great, after a decade of putting up with her old job.

4/18 – fd posted that MIL went into the hospital with multiple issues. Then Dad went in. MIL is still there, and Dad is out. Both will be okay – as well as can be expected for 87 and 89 year olds. Also GSD Bruno started chemo for lymphoma and is responding well. Prayers from the Horde have helped.

4/18 – neverenoughcaffiene asked that Devyn be kept in prayers. She is a young mother of 2 with a mass on her esophagus. The Doc said it was scar tissue and hopefully the second opinion will agree.

4/18 – Smell the Glove could use some prayers as therapy and rehab occur after gout/sepsis.
4/25 Update – Thanks for your prayers. The extreme gout has cleared and the nasty wound is healing.

4/18 – PA Dutchman asked for prayers for his family. His dad passed away on 4/9 after complications from a fall. He was 95 and a veteran of the Korean War, 34th Inf Rgt. Mostly prayers are need for PA Dutchman’s mom, who is absolutely heartbroken.

4/18 – PabloD has been having dizzy spells for the past few weeks. He is seeing a doctor soon, and is requesting prayers that figure it out and that it’s nothing too serious.

4/18 – Sam Adams requested prayers for a friend, Mary F, who was just sent to a long-term recovery facility after having a tracheostomy.

4/18 – Doof provided an update on his mother. She is doing better. She moved into her own room in an assisted living facility. It’s walking distance from Doof’s house, which is great. Her mental state has improved dramatically. She can no longer walk but she does stand with some assistance and can transfer between a wheelchair and bed or a lift/recliner chair. This facility is more of a home and less of a hospital, which hopefully will provide a good opportunity for her to enjoy life. He appreciates the Horde’s prayers and asks for prayers that she settles in comfortably and develops new friendships.

4/24 – Notsothoreau asked for prayers for a friend’s father (Cory), who needs prayers for strength and peace as he is going through some troubled times.

4/27 – Matthew Kant Cipher sent his thanks to those who prayed for his friend Layne (who is also his son’s FIL). The Horde may recall that in August, Layne was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He has since undergone courses of chemo, immunotherapy, and radiation. His latest scans came back clean. The cancer is in remission; praise be to God! Prayers are also humbly requested for Mrs. MKC, who is dealing with a new flare-up of a GI condition that had been leaving her alone until a recent procedure re-aggravated it. It is very frustrating/discouraging as she waits to see a new GI doctor.

4/25 – Retired Buckeye Cop asked that we would continue to lift his 16 year old grandson (LH) up in prayers, as LH continues to consider the call to priesthood in the Catholic Church. LH recently went to a meeting with a group of young men who are considering the priesthood.

4/25 – Fenelon Spoke asked for prayers for “I”, who Fenelon visited and anointed with oil, and prayed for healing of her health concerns.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Went to Confession yesterday at my local parish. On Fridays Confessions are heard between 10 and 11 and I got there at 10:20 to see about 25 people ahead of me. I thought I was a dead duck but, for once and despite the greater number of women in line, everyone (or the priest) was very efficient.

Reminder: The Charlie Brown character is a representation of frustrated hopes and dreams. His true failure is in retaining unwarranted hope and optimism. Yeah, blackpillers hardest hit. Glad to hear you are on the mend.

I seem to have had a brush with mycocarditis, first time since my Cardiac Event in 2019. Went to the ER, found I wasn't having a full-on attack, taking it easy and scheduling follow-up appointments with primary and cardiologist.

The rest is helping, and because I've been sidelined, the kids have stepped up and are cleaning and reorganizing the house, telling me to just chill. I think they finally realize how much I hate the current mess, and that leaving me to do it alone pretty much guarantees I'll work myself back into the hospital, same as in 2019.

As was the case then, this is a blessing in disguise. Lots more time to read St. Augustine!

QT, people will say that for you now, "Every day is Saturday." On one level, that's true. But now, the errands you *had* to run on Saturday (or Sunday) because you were occupied M-F can be dealt with on any day. So those errands days will seem like your old Saturday, and if you choose to do nothing on your actual Saturday, it will seem like a vacation day in the old times.

Such is my reaction after a year in retirement, anyway.

Finished a long and utterly pointless (save from the historical perspective) project imaginable. I went through every show that our late, great Lacey appeared in as a special and squared up all the records, all 379 of them. Date, show, link to the AKC results, entry, results in breed and group and who she lost to.

The searchable results on the AKC site only go back 10 years and Lacey was shown between 2000 and 2005. If a judge dies or goes inactive, or if a club ceases to exist, they're purged from the AKC site. So it required some inventiveness to gather everything up accurately. But it was done.

During the COVID nonsense I became so disgusted I retired in place in late '21. Quiet quitting and all that. I faced pretty much every decision and assignment with the question Does It Matter and a shoulder shrug. After watching my entire management chain bully pregnant employees into a medical procedure they didn't want I refused to take any more ethics training and just shifted my transmission into neutral. Buh bye.

51 I've been retired for about 6 years. It's true that weekends "don't matter as much" as they used to. I find I get into a week sometimes and have no clue what the actual day of the week is. I still can't figure out trash day though.

57 The Daily Mail article on coffee: In the top paragraphs, the implication is that drinking coffee is bad.

"They found regular coffee drinkers experienced more impulsive behaviour and emotional reactivity than people who did not drink coffee.
But after coffee drinkers gave up their habit for a fortnight, both measures fell."

Then they go on to tell you how re-introducing coffee lowered anxiety and psychological distress, and coffee consumption improves gut biome and reduces inflammation.

You cannot hate journalists enough.

51 I've been retired for about 6 years. It's true that weekends "don't matter as much" as they used to. I find I get into a week sometimes and have no clue what the actual day of the week is. It's nice to go to the grocery store on, say, Tuesday afternoon and it not being as busy as Saturday. Or getting the oil changed on Thursday morning and there being nobody in line.

I still can't figure out trash day though.

I sympathize with those who have deep spiritual concerns and want to talk to a priest about them. The problem is that Confession during regular hours is a bad place to do it. Given the limited hours most parishes provide, I sympathize somewhat more with those many people who are waiting patiently for their turn.

Alternate take: they had a racy lives back in the day, and as they feel their end coming, many memories are coming back to them and they seek consolation when recalling a lifetime's worth of sin.

I am much more conscientious than I was before I turned 29, and my confessions often turn to confronting the shame I now feel for what I did. What seemed praiseworthy and "wild" was in reality depraved and I was too blind to see it. Looking back with clear moral teaching, I shudder, especially as I help raise the grandchildren to avoid those sins.

I do find much consolation in that my kids literally cannot conceive of me having a sordid past - not because I am a hypocrite, but because I raised them with strong guardrails that they have (for the most part) respected. I wish my parents had given me that gift instead of what they imagined to be "freedom."

We observe the Transitus as a way to remember his holy death and renew our commitment to the Gospel life Francis lived.

The interesting thing is that they had very much faded when I entered the Church, and I was untroubled by them for a long time. The birth of my grandchildren really brought it all back, in part because unlike when I was a parent, juggling a job, the Guard and other children, now I had more time to reflect and was reminded of my kids as well as my childhood and growing up.

I also began talking to my father more often, and our conversations often turned to things that happened when I was little and never understood. It has brough healing and understanding, and we are closer than ever, but it also provoked a reckoning of sorts.

My main point was we really can't know why people seek Reconciliation, and the most outwardly pious and seemingly bland people often had a very different nature when they were young.

126 When I was scheduling my appointment and gave the reason, I mentioned myocarditis and then added "seems like everyone is doing it now, but I had it before it was fashionable!"

The receptionist laughed and said "You know, that's true."

Acute myocarditis presents like a heart attack and the treatment was the same. In my case, there was no damage to the heart whatsoever, because what happened was that the heart was compressed by surrounding tissue, so when that compression relented, I felt better.

Recovery took a few weeks, and the strangest thing was how I would just sort of stop when I had become overexerted. I mean that literally, I would come to an abrupt halt and have to immediately seek rest. It was like an invisible leash. With time, it got longer and longer and finally disappeared. My current bout involves mild chest pain and higher blood pressure, but no hard stop. I just stop myself when I feel it because I don't want things to get worse.

I also think my blood pressure meds contribute to greater BP sensitivity. Muldoon could probably explain why.

I’ve surmised a lot of the distress we complained about is caused by excessive glucose. It might be a bit simplistic (maybe not) but lab techs ex., use Agar to feed bacteria on slides for study. A huge load of sugars in our guts probably creates an imbalance, if chronic.

Creating accessible images is quite challenging. AI isn't very good at it because it can't understand the *context* of an image.

So apparently even in this conservative area they had a May day rally yesterday. It’s amazing that now the left is openly celebrating communism… never thought I’d see that in my lifetime. 137 Prayer list always puts things in perspective. God, send your loving healing to this world, Jesus reinforce the Spirit in our lives. It is my will that our Father's will be done.

Off to shower and change the ostomy bag. Still need surgeries but need for my heart to be a little stronger first. Life's funny like that. Prayers welcomed for daughter and her husband who really want children. For our son who is estranged and keeping us away from the grandkids. For goodson on better employment and losing some weight. For cousins confused and estranged. And so many and so much more.

It's a wonderful life, if a roller coaster.

Like with everything else, individual priests have their strengths and weaknesses. Some deliver awesome homilies while others put you to sleep. I've really come to appreciate the value of a good confessor and since we see regular turnover (we're a starter parish for the newly ordained), people note who is best at each.

"Go to Father X's Masses, they're great. Father Y is the best confessor, though." Our current pastor is being reassigned, and my wife and I have been talking about visiting his new parish from time to time, because his homilies are so good.

150 I’m reading “Age of Jackson” by Schlesinger.

Not much has changed. The question then as well, something along the lines of how can Democracy work? Can’t have the wealthy or “natural aristocracy” run everything. Farmers, tradesman, working people should have a say too, or they will become dispossessed.

The election of Andy Jackson really freaked a lot of people out. Now guys like Hamilton thought it perfectly natural that big government and big business should work together. Others were concerned that the large banks would become the de facto government, and run everything.

Nothing ever changes it seems, just the names maybe. Same ole place that never was, only moreso

Callers to the hotline — 808-824-4707 — will be asked to provide key details using a system known as “SALUTE,” which includes information such as the number of agents, the type of activity taking place, the location, duration and any equipment present.

I’ve surmised a lot of the distress we complained about is caused by excessive glucose. It might be a bit simplistic (maybe not) but lab techs ex., use Agar to feed bacteria on slides for study. A huge load of sugars in our guts probably creates an imbalance, if chronic.

That's exactly how it is at my parish. Our priest that is an excellent confessor gives very theologically-oriented homilies. They put Mrs. Cop to sleep, but since I'm a lay Dominican (Study is one of charisms of the Order of Preachers) I find them interesting but not exciting.

Our new-ish Nigerian priest probably gives the most enthusiastic homilies. He's very animated and does not just stand at the ambo. He can be funny, too. He made a comment, "My married brother told me that as a married man he can either be right, or be happy and just agree with his wife." The married dudes in the pews were nodding their heads and the wives were thinking, "that's not funny!!!"

It's not exactly the same for us mackeral-snapping Romish papists (that is the technical term). The Roman Missal gives the written instructions for the order of the Mass, so -- in theory -- any Novus Ordo Mass or Tredentine Latin Mass will be exactly the same anywhere around the world.

Is your betrothed not Catholic? If so, that will present a challenge to being married in a Catholic Church.

If it's the marriage-preparation classes, way back when the future Mrs. Cop was my fiance', we found the classes a very good foundation for a lasting marriage. I'm not going to lie and say we've never had any conflict as a married couple, but they've been pretty minor.

Yes, and some people feel more comfortable confessing outside of their parish. During Advent and Lent, there are Penance Services where lots of priests from other parishes participate.

At the same time, people tend to stay local. My parish is somewhat unique in that there are two locations that were once separate and have been merged, and there remains a "student" and "townie" identity at each one, though it is fading over time.

The liberal Catholics (overwhelmingly Boomers) still identify with the student parish, even though many now live in other parishes.

The upshot is the the Church is far from monolithic, even within the Roman Rite. For example, there are parishes sponsored by various orders who exist outside the territorial diocesan structure.

For a while a ways back I went to a popular Methodist Church, good congregation. They had a senior pastor who was very good at working with people, very likable. Did a lot of things well. But, as a good friend and I agreed, every sermon he ever gave was just a 15 minute recitation of unconnected, slightly humorous anecdotes about nothing, and then he would smile and walk away from the lecturn.

He had the public speaking skills of Kamala Harris. The Methodist heirarchy noticed this and decided to do something about it, so they promoted him to Bishop.

196 All I’m getting at, gut problems and related chronic TMI issues are very much remedied or improved by cutting out excessive sugar, carbs, glucose.

Starve ‘em out, and a more healthy balance will automagically occur, and fairly rapidly. Tannins are especially helpful in this regard, (though probably not when loaded with cream and sugar). Tea especially is under study for this, and also oral health and gum disease. The “bad” bacteria do not like polyphenols.

165 I remember a May Day that preceded communism.
It was a pagan mating dance with a May pole in the center and streamers coming from it. We would hold the streamers and dance around in a circle, girls one way, boys the other until the lines were so short that each boy and girl were facing one another.

Of course, back then, in elementary school, they didn't tell us the real purpose of the festival because young people were innocent.

201 "The gut microbiome refers to the trillions of bacteria and other microbes living in the digestive system.,,.

*************

I know there is supposed to be no math on the blog but...

The volume of a single E.coli bacterium is roughly 1 cubic micrometer, or one millionth (10e-6) of a cubic meter. So we can assume a spherical mega bacterium (equal to one million E. coli) has a diameter of 1 meter. A trillion is one million million, so if you had "trillions" of bacteria in your gut you would have exploded long before you went two weeks without coffee. QED

Sounds legit!

Stateless - I'll try to find such, see if they'll help enough to matter. A bunch of stuff I feel I could have done months ago to get 'gig-level' budget assists to help now, but... back then I was still expecting sanity to prevail in time, y'know?
