Dan Bongino Flushed Deep State Leakers Out of the FBI By Using the "Canary Trap" Technique

I don't know if it's really called the "canary trap." I just know that's what Tom Clancy called it. One finds a leaker by leaking particularlized misinformation to different people. Then you sit back and see what version of the misinformation winds up in the press.

Then you fire the person you told that piece of individualized misinformation to.

Tyrian Lanister used it in Game of Thrones, too.

Bongino used the same technique to separate real FBI agents interested in actaully doing their jobs from the treasonous Democrat "snakes" who infest American government to tunnel through it and collapse it.

Bongino said he was repeatedly assured certain individuals were trustworthy, only to suspect them of leaking shortly afterward.
"It happened a couple times where they'd say, 'Oh, you can trust John Smith.' And you trust John Smith, and then a week later you see a leak in the media and you'd be like, 'I'm pretty sure that came from John Smith,'" he said.
At that point, most bureaucrats would shrug and complain. Bongino did something smarter.
He set a trap.
To flush out leakers, Bongino began planting harmless, fake details--like an "innocuous" schedule item--and sharing them selectively with specific individuals. Then he watched. If that exact detail showed up in the press, he had his answer.
"It was like we would play this little game," he said.
Call it a game if you want. It was actually a classic counterintelligence tactic, and it worked. When the planted information surfaced publicly, Bongino confronted the source directly. No guesswork. No plausible deniability. Done.

Konrad's subsequent posts which have ignited a firestorm on X including staffers, etc. weighing in, also indicate the problem in part with Thune is that he inherited these problematic staffers when he agreed to be majority leader.

These top staffers come with the job, not from Thune and as Thune himself is selected by his colleagues, not by voters, those staffers are run in part by the Caucus, not Thune.

Konrad does not go into it but others have noted that Congressional lawmaking abilities have largely shriveled in part due to law writing being delegated to outside interest groups and to key staffers within that use these complicated bills to create their own power centers and funding for their allies.

This explains why our annual funding bills are such a shitshow--the key committee and leadership staffers and former staffers who are now lobbyists for special interest groups purposefully stall and delay so these bills so that a complicated omnibus/continuing resolution where lots of funding and provisions can be hidden has become the norm.

From what I have read and heard from him the job was pretty much dealing with HR bull$hit and manpower issues.

However, you don't hang around an actual conservative republican's office very long as a staffer unless you believe in the mission. i knew a lot of Mike Lee's staff and they were solid people who did the work to push actual conservative policy to the extent they could.

We log in and get the pin from the IRS website, it's rejected.

Call them and they say they'll request a new PIN and it will be mailed to me within 30 days. It was toward the end of March. "Uh, tax day is April 15th, shorter than 30 days."

We get the mail in a week. Same. Damn. PIN.

We mailed it in, finally, on the 14th.

They're kids of, or special appointments by, political friends, juicy donors and current or former pols, paid extremely well & with excellent benefits & transferrable skills and connections during their time working for a specific individual. (Ha.) When that individual goes by quitting, not being elected, dying in office, etc. you go out the door too. c'est la vie

Regardless, most manage to stick out their entire careers in high paid political jobs in D.C., other Federal or state agencies or the best paying non-profits.

Most aren't. I was none of those things when I got hired.

I also didn't get paid anything resembling "extremely well." I topped out at about $40k/year before I found a better private sector job. The benefits are...okay at best, it's just government health insurance. Paid time off was in line with any corporate job you'd find. I think it was 3 weeks/year.

William Natcher of Kentucky ran his office that way. His wife was his chief of staff. Notably he always returned most of his House office allowance as he was extremely popular in his district and spent less than one quarter of his House office allowance. Ironically, the anti nepotism provisions make it more difficult to hire family members as staff. So those so inclined, like Maxine Waters, simply put them on their campaign staffs funded directly by donors. Probably worse in the bargain for that tradeoff.
