Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Dan Bongino Flushed Deep State Leakers Out of the FBI By Using the "Canary Trap" TechniqueI don't know if it's really called the "canary trap." I just know that's what Tom Clancy called it. One finds a leaker by leaking particularlized misinformation to different people. Then you sit back and see what version of the misinformation winds up in the press. Then you fire the person you told that piece of individualized misinformation to. Tyrian Lanister used it in Game of Thrones, too. Bongino used the same technique to separate real FBI agents interested in actaully doing their jobs from the treasonous Democrat "snakes" who infest American government to tunnel through it and collapse it.

its like being undercover in the mob. You sting them, they get taken down, but never really go away. Undercover you had a false id and could try and hide somewhere they won't find you. Not Kash or Bongino they are always going to be targeted. No place to hide. If the left ever gets on top, they will come for the entire Trump system. Ace, for what it is worth, John Konrad on X has created a minor shit storm by specifically singling out staffers in Congress as to why our legislative branch is dysfunctional.
Worth reading along with his subsequent posts and now Data Republican is getting into it. "John Ʌ Konrad V@johnkonrad · Apr 28 John Thune has become a punching bag for good reason but there is a more insidious force at play nobody can talk about. Let me explain… The staffers in Thune’s office have been asking Trump Naval and Maritime appointees questions about me before confirmation hearings. I doubt John Thune knows who I am. His staff absolutely does. They track me. They hate me. And they will quietly bleed pushing out any appointee I’m friends with. Someone close to PPO told me a Trump staffer commented that “Konrad should be a HBS case study on someone every in the administration respects but has zero chance of any appointment.” It’s probably because I’ve called out congressional staffers numerous times before. This is how Congress actually works. It’s always the staffers. When we first floated the SHIPS Act, Mike Johnson’s hometown delegation were strong supporters. What he is saying about "two FBIs" is true in all organizations, and why good managers are worth so much money - they can figure it out and do what is good for the organization. It is related to the following--
Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy -States that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people: -Those who are devoted to the goals of the organization and those dedicated to the organization itself. -The Iron Law states that in every case the second group will gain and keep control of the organization. It will write the rules, and control promotions within the organization. Posted by: bob (moron inbobnitus) at April 29, 2026 02:29 PM (4F/0/) 33

Per a previous thread comment about how Obama fired legit workers and replaced them with sycophants:
A minister in ancient China with aspirations for power once brought in a deer to a meeting. "Isn't that a fine horse?" he asked those present. Several scoffed, saying that it was obviously a deer. Others, wanting to get on the minister's good side, praised the "horse". Those who stated the truth were later hounded down by the 'law'. Those who lied, remained to bolster the minister's power. There's strong parallels to what Obama and his group have done to places like the FBI and the DOJ. Also see: * Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy * Transgenderism ("Isn't that a fine woman?") Stephen L. Miller retweeted Spencer A. Klavan @SpencerKlavan 21h Every time Trump survives an assassination attempt he enters a kind of zen fugue state where he transcends his usual belligerence and radiates unearthly serenity. "I wasn't worried," he said after this last one. "I understand life. We live in a crazy world." In this photo he looks like the speaker of Yeats's "Lake Isle of Innisfree," gazing dreamily into the respite that awaits him when at last his labor on this earth is done. "Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade." This usually lasts about a week before he goes back to thundering obscenities at his enemies and wishing hellfire upon them at the merest provocation. I said above that good managers are worth so much because they figure out who is working to backstab and advance, and who is working for the organization to succeed.
(I would call this "who had a goatee" based on the Star Trek episode where they all had goatee and were the other way. This was similar to technique L used to (almost) catch Light Yagami in Death Note.
What's the most delicious about this technique is that almost without fail, it catches the kinds of people who think they're the smartest people in the room. (In Yagami's case, he was a genuine genius, (at least within the context of the story) it's just that he was overconfident and L was his equal) It's a little like the best way to swat a fly is to use its own innate defenses against it. Thune is not a good manager. He is worthless. Posted by: bob ======== Konrad's subsequent posts which have ignited a firestorm on X including staffers, etc. weighing in, also indicate the problem in part with Thune is that he inherited these problematic staffers when he agreed to be majority leader. These top staffers come with the job, not from Thune and as Thune himself is selected by his colleagues, not by voters, those staffers are run in part by the Caucus, not Thune. Konrad does not go into it but others have noted that Congressional lawmaking abilities have largely shriveled in part due to law writing being delegated to outside interest groups and to key staffers within that use these complicated bills to create their own power centers and funding for their allies. This explains why our annual funding bills are such a shitshow--the key committee and leadership staffers and former staffers who are now lobbyists for special interest groups purposefully stall and delay so these bills so that a complicated omnibus/continuing resolution where lots of funding and provisions can be hidden has become the norm. Bongino is not the first government manager to divulge the use of this technique in US government, e.g. reportedly this was done a lot in the first Trump administration. I don't think revealing it is going to make leakers any more circumspect. They want to tell what they know. Like James O'Keefe's fake date stings are never going to stop working. Like these maggots are never going to stop keep documenting their disloyalty and 'secret plans' in e-mails. They don't learn any better. Surprising, but true. The canary trap is one of the more basic ways counterintelligence uses to find traitors (and foreign spies). Write a bunch of different reports on the same subject. Distribute to the various departments. Use your own spies to see which version of the report shows up in the files of a hostile foreign government (or in this case, the media. Same thing pretty much these days). Now you know there's a traitor in (or at least a foreign spy with access to) Section X of Department Y. See who had access to that version and go from there. Pretty soon you know who the traitor (or foreign spy) is. It's saddening and enraging that there are so many traitors in our own government.

F 'em. They're kids of, or special appointments by, political friends, juicy donors and current or former pols, paid extremely well & with excellent benefits & transferrable skills and connections during their time working for a specific individual. (Ha.) When that individual goes by quitting, not being elected, dying in office, etc. you go out the door too. c'est la vie
Regardless, most manage to stick out their entire careers in high paid political jobs in D.C., other Federal or state agencies or the best paying non-profits. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at April 29, 2026 03:14 PM (NFX2v) ------ Some staff are nepo babies and are hired due to their parents being donors or friends. Most aren't. I was none of those things when I got hired. I also didn't get paid anything resembling "extremely well." I topped out at about $40k/year before I found a better private sector job. The benefits are...okay at best, it's just government health insurance. Paid time off was in line with any corporate job you'd find. I think it was 3 weeks/year.
Also see: * Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy * Transgenderism ("Isn't that a fine woman?") Posted by: Another Anon at April 29, 2026 02:34 PM (4h45B) I stopped calling transmania Point Deer Make Horse, because the reference was too obscure. The incident you refer to lead to one of the briefest dynasties, since it was so dysfunctional. One of the ways that Chinese deal with having such an ancient culture is by distilling historical lessons into little four-word epigrams. The epigram for that whole travesty is Point Deer Make Horse, with layers of lessons for keeping your head straight, and keeping it attached, and knowing how seductively effective tactics can be crippling long-term. Ryan's canary trap put a unique summary at the beginning of each copy of a sensitive doc, tailored as bait for journalists, in that it was a concise and punchy abstract, with different adjectives or clauses scattered throughout.
The journalist would receive the doc, and quote verbatim from the bait, thus outing the leaker. Posted by: barbarausa at April 29, 2026 02:55 PM (enw9G) That is why it is important to run such information through a couple of translation programs to knock the "upper end" syntax and word choice apart. 230 Grassley is actually more on the ball and driven than most of the GOP half his age. His work ethic is admirable and you could actually pick up a quarter in front of him without worrying about taking it on the squeaker, unlike say, Mike Lawler.

220 >>>Let's have some fun with some potential fixes:
"Staffers are allowed, but only if they come from the congress person's immediate family." We could go Byzantine style: "Staffers are allowed, but only if they are first castrated, barred from marrying, and not allowed to bequeath property." Posted by: brak William Natcher of Kentucky ran his office that way. His wife was his chief of staff. Notably he always returned most of his House office allowance as he was extremely popular in his district and spent less than one quarter of his House office allowance. Ironically, the anti nepotism provisions make it more difficult to hire family members as staff. So those so inclined, like Maxine Waters, simply put them on their campaign staffs funded directly by donors. Probably worse in the bargain for that tradeoff.
