Three people were sentenced to jail in an insurance fraud scheme that involved dressing up as a bear and staging fake attacks. Alfiya Zuckerman, 39, Ruben Tamrazian, 26, and Vahe Muradkhanyan, 32, pleaded no contest to felony insurance fraud (injuring or destroying insured property) in the "Operation Bear Claw" investigation. The scheme involved the suspects claiming a bear entered their 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost and destroyed the interior, according to a California Department of Insurance (CDI) news release. After their November 2024 arrest, each was sentenced to 180 days in jail and two years of supervised probation on Thursday, April 16. Zuckerman was ordered to pay $55,360 in restitution; Tamrazian, $52,268; while Muradkhanyan's restitution amount is still being determined. A fourth suspect, Ararat Chirkinian, 39, is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing in September 2026. A very safe click: Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day. 1. Yes, That presumes federal funding. Below that cost threshold they can do major repairs with 'maintenance' money at the agencies discretion (the money is given lump sum by Congress w/o regard to specific projects). I had one project where the building "maintenance" money was used to strip it to bare structural steel.
How? If funded by Congress the threshold is relative to all new construction cost. If funded by Congress.... Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at April 27, 2026 11:11 PM (/lPRQ) This is why we spend so much on military housing on base. Redoing old, useless 1950's concrete barracks into "apartments," which are always awful, and cost more than going into town and buying each soldier a 2-bedroom house. It is all "maintenance" money. If we tore the whole thing down and started new, it would be cheaper, but the funding would take 6 years through Congress and might not happen at all, so we spend all the maintenance money making something that's about half-assed. That thing is ugly even by commie standards.
Posted by: nerdygirl at April 27, 2026 10:46 PM (0Htd1) I was gonna say there's no such thing but, my God I just looked... pretty obvious they're trying to make it as ugly as possible, and somehow they succeeded...? I thought demons only helped destroy but I guess they're good at conjuring eyesores. Posted by: ... at April 28, 2026 12:18 AM (vE0+H) 284

I think it was James Beard’s “Beard on Bread” recipe book, that guy must have liked Salt. 2 tablespoons or something crazy like that. Hey, it was the 70s, and Bread does not taste nearly as good without Salt.
Salt is also necessary to counteract some of the rise of yeast, actually. And modern recipes of all kinds, not just Bread, have gone to the other extreme, you can tell because they barely deign to include it, with some ridiculous “1/64th teaspoon”. “Salt to taste”; won’t see that any longer either. Is there cheap pepperoni anywhere? I was thinking of heating it with mozzarella.
Posted by: Boss Moss Super low-carb 'crustless pizza'. One of the chains has it. To make it at home just use an aluminum pie pan or other tin, spritz it with some oil, and load up all the usual shit. Works great in toaster ovens. There is some 'cheap' pepperoni. Any store probably has at least three brands. I used to always go for Bridgeford in stick and cut it myself... and it used to be the cheapest and the best, but labor intensive. but something happened to the formula recently (or local distro) and it turned to shit, almost rancid. I started making my own pizza not that long ago. I can't wait to see my next blood work.
Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division Damn. I forgot the bacon. Don't forget bacon. Best thing about making your own is you can focus on the stuff/quality/quantity that matters to you. Sometimes I keep it simple, but most of the time I go total carnivore. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at April 28, 2026 12:12 AM (/lPRQ) Very first pizza I made had bacon, I made sure of it. Old Boars are tough, and Gamey flavored, so they make Pepperoni with it. For home Pizza finely chopped Ham is a pretty good substitute or at least more likely to be on hand.

I lived in “B Quad” at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii one of the oldest buildings on base.

My store has two brands of cheap pepperoni and they aren't worth the money.
Anybody remember Ireland's Bar-B-Q in a can? Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at April 28, 2026 12:27 AM (Puq9y) Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at April 28, 2026 12:28 AM (Cqx++) 293
In the short time between vacating an old 'dorm' and demo'ing it at MacDill AFB some hookers moved in and set up a trick pad.
Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher I was stationed at MacDill from 93-97. Which old dorms are you referring to? And if those hookers were from that neighborhood outside of the base, wear a HAZMAT suit before, uh, business commences. Use Bread Flour (high protein) and age it for a day. A poolish is one way. You’ll know it’s coming along because it has this tangy great aroma. When baking in the oven it is out of this world. AP flour is good, don’t misunderstand , but it just smells kind of fake, like a Wonder Bread bakery instead of that exotic french bakery thing.

Posted by: Puddleglum A block south of SOCOM, south side of Administrator Ave. The new dorms are quite visible in on-line maps. I think this was 2008-2012 Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at April 28, 2026 12:36 AM (/lPRQ) 297
LOL on the White Castle, Bers, we didn't have any of those around here but there was Eddie's Diner open all night.
Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at April 28, 2026 12:20 AM (0nHVk) Back in the very early 80's the 24 hour thing was just catching on. There was one 24 hour McDonalds, but there were 2 white castles about 10 miles apart. Originally that McDonalds wasn't 24 hour, but it was smack dab in between one of the white castles and a jack in the box which were both 24 hour. They finally got a clue and went 24 hour. The problem was they were a little far from all the area metal clubs and bars. There was a 3rd white castle that was somewhat close to the bulk of the clubs that were on this section of Rt35 heading towards the shore, so in reality that white castle was the safe bet and there was nothing else that was 24 hour. Eventually a shit ton of places went 24 hour, but in the bad old days white castle was salvation.
