DeSantis Unveils New Congressional Map for Florida, Flipping Four Democrat Seats to Republicans

He told them that if they f***ed around, they would find out.

They're not finding out.

Gov. Ron DeSantis dropped a political bomb on Monday, unveiling a new congressional map for Florida that he says will finally give the Sunshine State the representation it deserves -- and if it holds up, Republicans could walk away with four additional U.S. House seats heading into the 2026 midterms.

The proposal is a mid-decade redraw of Florida's congressional districts, and it's already getting a friendly reception. Republicans control both chambers of the Florida legislature, so passage is more a matter of when than if. Once the map clears the House and Senate, it comes back to DeSantis for his signature.
The governor has been telegraphing this move for a while, and he's not shy about explaining why. Florida was "shortchanged" in the 2020 Census, DeSantis argues, despite explosive population growth and a seismic shift in the state's political landscape. The state has gone from a Democratic voter-registration advantage to a 1.5-million Republican edge -- a transformation that the current congressional map simply doesn't reflect.
"Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census, and we've been fighting for fair representation ever since," DeSantis said.
But his argument isn't just political -- he's also making a constitutional case. The existing district lines, he contends, were drawn based on race, and that's a problem. "Drawing maps based on race, which is reflected in our current congressional districts, is unconstitutional and should be prohibited," DeSantis said, framing the remap as both a legal correction and a democratic one.

That image makes it look like there's just one Democrat district, but there are four. There are three on the east coast which aren't visible because the image is cropped on the right.

Hakeem Jeffries, the nephew of black supremacist and cuckoo racial conspiracy theorist Leonard Jeffries, is threatening to come to Florida to campaign against the map.

DeSantis begs him to come. He says he'll put him up in the Governor's Mansion, because nothing would animate Republicans more than seeing this jackass invading their state.

This is simply the amuse bouche. The main course will be when SCOTUS rules that majority-minority districts are unconstitutional. The three libs on the Court may hold off on a dissent until June in hopes of the ruling not affecting the 2026 midterms, but that's coming. The dessert is going to be the redistricting after the 2030 Census.

There's something to be said for staying and fighting in a blue state to try and save it (I'm in CT, so I get that argument), but when people vote with their feet and make red states redder and more populous, that's when the fun really begins.

As I'm sure you know, mass population movement from blue states to red states doesn't just shift Congressional Seats from blue states to red states, it shifts Electoral Votes from blue states to red states. The challenge to VA's new map isn't based on an unconstitutional gerrymander. IIRC, it's based on pure procedure: the Democraps didn't follow the proscribed rules for citizen voting on the new map. From what I understand about VA law, it seems open and shut to me.

2026 is a largely unimportant election.

2028 will be hugely important because of the Census. A Vance (or Rubio) presidency that controls the Census can enforce real counting (the 2020 was...estimated, very seriously). In addition, Trump started the pattern of using every federal officer as deputized immigration enforcement, which, if continued, would actively discourage illegals from answering the door of census takers (assuming illegals have to be counted, which is not a closed legal questions, the suit was dropped due to mootness after Biden changed the rules in 2021).

It's my understanding that both TX and FL have very few unsafe Red seats. That the gerrymanders were actually done quite intelligently, unlike both the CA and VA maps which are recipes for blowback. If the VA special election results were applied to the new House races, Dems would have an 8-3 majority, not the 10-1 they shot for.

As long as one attempts to keep the districts compact... the cities pretty much become districts with big chunky rural blocks taking up the rest of the state.
If your goal is to maximize districts with 51% D you slice that city
Into as many thin pie slices as you can then absorb Repubs far out into the countryside. Using that method there is no reason a state with 51% D cannot get 100% D seats... just lack of putting the effort into it.

Rumor has it that SCOTUS is ready to rule on whether minority set-aside districts are forbidden instead of required, and the dissenters are slow-walking the issuance of the ruling; reading the behavior, this means that the majority ruled in favor of it being forbidden, and the power-hungry leftists are trying to filibuster red states from re-districting in time.

So, what DeSantis is doing here is positioning this redrawing of the map as being required by the imminent SCOTUS decision. Once it's issued, it will (if the tea leaves have been read correctly) moot any challenges to this new map on a "civil rights" basis. But, he isn't waiting for the ruling to be issued, thus defanging the nasty commie powermongers' attempt to prevent the demanded reform from hitting the midterms. Also not a fan boy. This is my read as well. Desantis is a pretty good lawyer I think. He understands not just tactics but also strategy. He is very competent at his current job certainly. He is marginally more likable than say Ted Cruz - who I did kind of like but realized would never be electable on a national basis. Ron's appeal is selective. He'll do pretty well in the south. Not as well in the rust belt or farm country.

Michigan is similar. The redistricting team was given a requirement that the overall D/R split of seats should be consistent with voting results.

So 90% Detroit/Wayne County got split up in an attempt to food some red areas with Dem votes, leading to some wacky districts out in the boonies.

I am on lake Michigan. My district extends eastward to the shores of lake erie.

Originally, states often had a republican system similar to how states worked, dividing their districts by natural boundaries or natural polities.

The Supreme Court ruled that the responsibility to “guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of government” meant that no state could have a Republican form of government.

By its nature, trying to make population-equal districts is going to make weirdly shaped districts, and be very tempting to form those weirdly shaped districts into partisan guarantees.
