THE MORNING RANT: Senator John Cornyn is learning that “Trust me, I’m lying” doesn’t work like it used to

“Trust me, I’m lying” is a formerly effective campaign strategy that is no longer very effective. Unfortunately for Senator John Cornyn (RINO – TX), it’s all he has left to promise in his desperate attempt to win a 5th term of betraying Texas Republicans.

The way “Trust me, I’m lying” is supposed to work is that a politician lies to the voters back home about positions the voters care about (border security, 2nd Amendment, ballot integrity, etc.) Meanwhile, the politician’s true constituency – the Washington establishment - knows that their candidate is being necessarily dishonest with voters to get re-elected.

Unfortunately for Senator Cornyn, he has a long record of being open-border, anti-MAGA, anti-Trump, anti-2nd Amendment, anti-ballot integrity, and generally working to ensure that the Senate never addresses actual problems that voters expect to be addressed. His recent attempts at “Trust me, I’m lying”are having the opposite of the intended effect. Conservative voters know he’s lying, while the Democrat & RINO crossover voters he could formerly count on are drifting to Talarico as Cornyn offends them by posturing as an actual conservative.

Cornyn has been stating during this campaign that he opposes an open border and amnesty, telling the El Paso Times a few weeks ago that, “The first thing we need to do is secure the border. There is no way that the American people, and certainly my constituents in Texas, would allow us to take another stab at reforming our immigration laws until we’ve got the border secure.” Everyone knows he’s lying by now - he’s been elected four times to the US Senate by lying to Texans about border security. But his campaign made a mistake. While they have done a good job scrubbing their campaign site of English-language speeches where he advocated for open borders and amnesty, they didn’t scrub the Spanish-language videos from his You Tube page.

The indefatigable Scott Presler just found Spanish-language video from 2020 of John Cornyn promising amnesty to illegal aliens.

As documented by Texas Scorecard, “The video, which was previously available on his official YouTube channel, was quickly removed after circulation on social media.” Unfortunately for Team Cornyn, the video is still flying around the internet thanks to Mr. Presler.

Perhaps the biggest issue involving the Senate right now is the “SAVE Act,” which would use the force of power of federal law to eradicate much of the nationwide ballot fraud. Real conservative Ken Paxton is challenging Cornyn in the Republican senate primary, and Paxton is promising to eliminate the “zombie filibuster” so as to pass the SAVE Act. Cornyn, of course, has pretended that he supports the SAVE Act while hiding behind the zombie filibuster’s 60-vote threshold to make sure it doesn’t actually happen. As Presler and so many others have pointed out, the real filibuster is still an option, requiring only 50-votes.

In desperation, Cornyn tried the “Trust me, I’m lying” tactic regarding the filibuster, too. His campaign put out a tweet stating that, ”I support using the talking filibuster & making any changes necessary to Senate rules to get this passed.”

Because Cornyn had previously stated that eliminating the no-debate filibuster would be ”taking a wrecking ball to Senate rules,” an NBC reporter confronted Cornyn on his sudden about-face. With his contradictory positions being exposed by a media reporter, how did Cornyn explain the contradiction? He didn’t. He shoved his hand in the face of the reporter and told her ”I think we’re through. Go away.”

Reporter (Brennan Leach): You previously said that nuking the filibuster would be taking a wrecking ball to Senate rules. Is that no longer true?
Sen. John Cornyn: Um, I said I’d be open to reforms.
Reporter: What would you say to those who say you just changed your mind to win the President’s endorsement?
Sen. John Cornyn: I would say that’s not true.
Reporter: You also said—
Sen. John Cornyn: (interrupting, raising hand to block the camera) I think we’re through. Go away. Thank you.

Cornyn is about to be retired. Maybe other politicians will finally learn that ”Trust me, I’m lying” also needs to be retired as a political strategy.

It's an issue (for Republicans) in, essentially, one-party states. Moderate leftists run as Republicans, moderate leftist party regulars get them nominated, and then they're pretty much guaranteed to win the general.

Cornyn became a Senator pretty early on in Texas' switch from Dem to Republican. He was the first GOP AG elected (since 1874) and replaced Phil Graham in the Senate - a Democrat turned Republican. He should have been replaced 6 years ago, at least, but it is what it is.

DNC leadership can't control their presidential primaries. They barely managed it in 2016 when the cleared the deck for Hillary save for an unserious no-name senator from Vermont. In 2020, their whole plot to put Kamala in fell apart before the first vote was cast. In 2024, they had to outright forgo the entire primary process in order to get rid of the chosen candidate.

If you are asserting that 2028 will see the DNC bypassing their primary process, that may happen. But if it goes to a vote, Beshear has as much a chance as any other boring governor who will get drowned out in a media environment that encourages maximalist leftism and outrageousness just to get attention.

Midterms favor the party out of power.

Yes, Dems will probably win the House, but the map derived from the 2020 census guarantees that it won't be much of one. It'll be a narrow majority with a solid number of Dems from states and districts Trump won in 2024 and the GOP will probably win in 2028 when the turnout differential issue gets sorted out because it's a presidential primary.

Not even Obama's people figured out how to undo midterm issues. He lost both of his midterms badly.

And then the Senate? Absolute worst case scenario is probably a GOP majority of 51 (plus Vance). More likely scenario is going to be 52-53 GOP senators (NC could flip, but honestly so could GA and MI).

So, what damage can a slim Dem majority in the House do? Especially with ICE enforcement funded through 2028 because ofOBBB?

He won the SC primary by 30 points, and then the rest of the field just melted away.

Why? Because the black voters of the Democrat Party had chosen Biden early (Obama connection) and never wavered.

You want to predict the Democrat primary?

There is no better barometer than the black choice.

That's where Democrats get their free seats from, the stolen Census (6-10 seats, admitted) and Gingles which demands majority-minority districts (close to 30 total in red states).

The 2032 map is going to be...very different.

Keep in mind, though, the VA Supremes, instead of dismissing the GOP's lawsuit before the election for 'no damages,' instead placed it in abeyance. Now that it's been passed, they'll have to rule.

The VA Supreme Court could have ended this months ago but chose to reserve the right to render judgement. That's - at worst - neutral.

282 The real advantage from redistricting will come after 2030 and the (hopeful) overturning of Gingles (and maybe all of Section 2 of the VRA) later this year.

That's where Democrats get their free seats from, the stolen Census (6-10 seats, admitted) and Gingles which demands majority-minority districts (close to 30 total in red states).

The 2032 map is going to be...very different.
