Interesting expression on Mary Magdalene's face.

The artist wisely steered away from blatant shocked expression as that would look probably humorous, but went more for a "What the...?" or Could it be? stunned look.

Nice.

102 Mary Magdalene before Christ's Tomb
Francisco Ribalta

Museo Del Prado -

Attributed to Francisco Ribalta
Solsona, Lérida (Spain), 1565 - Valencia (Spain), 1628

The presence in Valencia in 1521 of several works by Sebastiano del Piombo, acquired by the diplomat Jerónimo Vich, inspired various generations of local artists. In this oil, Ribalta adapted the figure of the Magdalene from one of those compositions, The Lamentation over the dead Christ, now in Saint Petersburg. As he dispensed with the other figures, he added the inscription “Quia Tulerunt Dominum Meum” (They have taken away my Lord), to express her grief.

Wikipedia, in part - "Mary Magdalene is regarded by believers as a historical figure, possibly from Magdala. She is seen as a prominent follower of Jesus who was believed to have been healed by him, supported his ministry financially, and was present at his crucifixion and burial. She played a key role among his female disciples. Overall, there is limited information about her life."

It's a beautiful painting - almost too beautiful for its theme - but I'd pass hanging it.

Thank you.

IIRC, the ending of the film "The Passion of The Christ" depicted Jesus rising from a sarcophagus -- and you could see through the stigmata in his hands ... setting up the sequel (which I'm eagerly awaiting, "The Resurrection of the Christ" -- split into two parts and scheduled for release in 2027).

105 Since we're past 100, here's the semi-regular Poppins Report:

48 cloudy degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor. Rain on the way today and for the rest of the week. This has been a pretty lousy April so far as weather goes.

Finished my novel yesterday, but somehow, writing The End felt neither as satisfying or pleasurable as I thought it would be. I think it's because, subconsciously, my mind believes there's nothing more to do. Which isn't true, as there will be a lot of editing. I think it was more a, well, this project is over. Is there anything for me to do now? depression.

I spent the day yesterday driving around aimlessly, not liking anywhere I was and unable to even settle on what I wanted to have for lunch. And now I am here. I think I will go back to bed for a couple of hours.

One of my favorite memories as a kid in the late 60s growing up in what was then relatively small Las Vegas: for a treat, especially if we'd been well-behaved, mom would pile me and my two brothers in the car and drive a maybe 10 miles down nearby Boulder Highway in Las Vegas to a dinky little company town called Henderson (now the second largest city in Nevada) to an A&W drive-in.

The yound women would come out on the roller-skates to take and deliver your orders. Root beer floats and corn dogs ... food of The Childhood Gods!

Not high enough. Republicans need to exit the midterms fearing the future of their party. We need to take enough Senate seats so Fetterman isn't the 50th Republican vote.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have been working hard to cheat. Go out and vote. Don't listen to polls.

People are still supporting Republicans? Why? They're mishandling literally everything, including the "solutions" they promised and came up with themselves.

220 6-3, this is big.
From the summary, basically, minorities have to provide an alternate map that DOES NOT use race but still accomplishes the partisan goal of the state.

And "blacks = Democrats/Democrats = blacks" is not a valid claim that the proposed map was racially based.

That's how all these minority-majority districts were created.
And the Court specifically threw that out.

To make it clear: Dems can no longer just whine "it was racist, we know it was racist because all Republicans are racists!" and get maps thrown out.
1) they have to prove the racial motivation--not infer it
2) they have to prove an alternate map will provide the same R/D mix w/o using race.
100% of their challenges will fail now.

Gingles being overturned was only ever going to have a real effect for 2028 being argued last year.

AL might take advantage of it (LA will, obviously), but the FL map, for instance, is actually in alignment with Gingles (and the FL constitution which has racial requirements).

I don't think anyone is making that argument. The closest we've come is "wow, I didn't think this was being released so soon."

Trump fired the head of the Census Bureau within the first week of taking office again.

He estimated populations for 2020, by the way.

Gas is back up to where it was under Biden!

Sure, it's there because Trump is reorganizing the petrodollar world to favor us in a massive way, but he should have thought of a temporary increase at the pump and its effects on the midterms before making long term strategic decisions that advantage the US.

And the Dems have the built-in bonus of what are still likely 30-40 million illegal (not to mention millions more legal) alien residents in their favor, being based on total population, including illegal aliens and non-citizens, as determined by the decennial census.

Fixing that decision, so that illegals don't count for apportionment, would get the border locked tight in about 10 seconds.
