I'm working on my own personal projects right now. Dog Ralphy here by the computer. Cat Snowflake upstairs in my bedroom in her chair.
Anyways - ART - this actually just came up a few minutes ago. This is from Gemini. Some interesting stories from the art world I'm looking forward to learning more about. Section 3: Visual & Surface Arts Theme: The struggle to capture light, the danger of pigments, and the obsession with the perfect line. The Lead White Poison: The "Venetian Ceruse" that gave painters the perfect white but slowly paralyzed and killed them. Monet’s Cataracts: How the artist’s failing eyes turned his late water lilies into abstract explosions of red and purple. The Blue of the Virgin: The extreme cost of Lapis Lazuli, often more expensive than gold, reserved only for the holiest figures. The Anatomy Lessons: How Da Vinci and Michelangelo risked arrest and disease to dissect cadavers for "perfect" muscle sketches. The Secret of the Camera Obscura: The controversial theory that the Old Masters used "optical cheats" to achieve photographic realism. Mummy Brown: The macabre history of a pigment literally made from ground-up Egyptian mummies. Posted by: Stateless at April 30, 2026 10:02 AM (Sco7b) 109

So has everyone seen the red/blue button discussion?
There are two buttons and every reasoning adult on earth must press one. If you press the blue button nothing happens to *anyone* as long as more then 50% choose the blue button. If less then 50% choose the blue button all blue button pushers die If you press the red button nothing happens you either way Now, I think this is a dumb question for a reason I'll get into later if people are interested in this topic, but what would YOU press and why? Part 2..
The Speed of Van Gogh: Painting Starry Night in a single feverish session while confined to an asylum. The Vermeer Grid: The obsessive, pin-and-string method used to lock down perfect 3D perspective on a 2D canvas. The Graphite Smugglers: When high-quality graphite was so rare it was guarded by the British Crown like a military secret. The Watercolor Gamble: A medium that allows no mistakes—one drop of water can ruin a month of work. The Daguerreotype Mist: The early photographers who sat in rooms filled with mercury vapor just to develop a single image. The Charcoal Burners: The ancient, dirty process of turning willow branches into the artist’s most basic tool. The Cinnabar Red: The "Dragon’s Blood" pigment that was highly toxic but gave the world its most vibrant vermilion. The Stipple Obsession: Artists who created entire masterpieces using nothing but millions of tiny ink dots. Posted by: Stateless at April 30, 2026 10:03 AM (Sco7b) 112

What stands out for me with Tanner's painting is his use of light. It may be outdoors and natural or inside and manmade but always seems appropriate to the scene. This one shows the lady (tired? contemplative?) being quiet. The bit of light, perhaps from a candle, shows the skin tones and her posture and expression, the white clothing and the few highlights from the wooden chair. Just enough to give form against the dark background. The result is subtle, expressive, and creates a moment of solitude.

If you're doing you own check out, and you've got produce or whatever sold by the pound, check the weight before you bag it. It's an ongoing ripoff. Stores mislabel (intentionally) the weight.
So if the package of meat says 1.5 lbs and it weighs .65 lbs you're getting ripped off. That 1.5lbs @ $3.75 is now about a third less product for the same price. Posted by: Martini Farmer at April 30, 2026 10:54 AM (jehhT) 273

You are just arguing in your spare time.

I use self checkout at the grocery store because I want to bag the stuff myself based on what I can carry. The last time I used a person, they put stuff in a dozen plastic bags, impossible to move efficiently. Even worse now that paper bags are required and they are the cheapest the store can find and rip almost immediately.

I know it's not one of my better traits, but I like to see how deep of a conversation I can get people in in the few seconds available (without delaying anyone, of course). Great fun in elevators.
--------- Having spent some considerable time in health care waiting rooms, I grew a little tired of seeing people sitting around, isolated, as though they were in a funeral parlor. So, I just started striking up conversations with perfect strangers. Most folks are amenable to that, given a friendly approach. I think the key is to find some introductory approach that has nothing to do with the immediate circumstance. "How are you folks today?" works well in the South. Traffic and weather are always topics to get things under way. Before you know it, you'll find out where they are from, where they went to school etc. This almost always results in nice conversations.
