Microsoft is running a competition with $2 million in prizes to promote its Edge browser. There's a $1 million grand prize, three Mercedes Benz cars, and a whole swarm of tech gadgets and other goodies. But that's not the story. (Tom's Hardware)

The story is that this has been running for a month and nobody noticed.

Tech News

Google is planning to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, best known for its Claude AI tool, and nominally a competitor to Google in the AI space. (Tech Crunch)

That's interesting. How is Anthropic doing these days?

Well, okay, but that's just one guy. What does Anthropic say?
Anthropic admits it dumbed down Claude when trying to make it smarter. (The Register)

Issues in the last month include Claude defaulting to a lower-effort mode - figuratively dumber; a cache optimisation error that constantly cleared saved data, making the tool slower, less effective, and more expensive all at the same time; and a rule that shortened responses to queries, making it literally dumber.
Plus with the release of the latest Opus 4.7 version, there are dozens of GitHub issues open with the tool simply refusing to do what it is told. (The Register)

Manufacturers ran into a dead end with flash memory years ago: Shrinking the cells any further made them slower and less reliable; not shrinking them made progress impossible. The solution was to build up rather than out.

They're a great band. And they do a lot outside of Porcupine Tree too.

Steven Wilson, their frontman, has a few solo albums, and does a lot of production work, with everyone from Gentle Giant to Opeth.

Gavin Harrison, their drummer, is also in The Pineapple Thief, and has played with King Crimson, Level 42, and about eleventeen other bands.

I liked everything about it except those taxes and insurance rates. It begins to look as if I can get more house for less, or the same size for a lot less, in Indiana. (I hope the roads are good. Evansville was hit or miss in that department, though mostly hit; I was surprised when I drove over a bad patch of street.)

Same here. In cold weather I might have an herbal tea in the afternoon so I won't be caffeine-jazzed at bedtime, but it's the heat of the drink that I crave, not the juice.

Wolfus, the Midwest gets some heavy snowfall. Salt is used as a road-treatment, and it's hard on the asphalt.

We have friends that live in Indiana and visit them every now-and-again. It's a pretty decent state, but it's really useful in sucking-up the storms sweeping East from the Great Plains before they get to Ohio.

52 I was aware of the Microsoft sweepstakes but it seemed like just the latest iteration of the MS Rewards program. I seem to always have a bit under 20K points. I occasionally use them to enter a contest or some virtual lottery. There never seems to be enough for anything really attractive. for a long time, if you were diligent, you could maintain a GamePass Ultimate subscription from points, which I guess appealed to teens or others without jobs. For an adult, the time required to meet the monthly subscription cost was not a good trade-off.

Early FWP time. I maintain a spreadsheet of show results for The Big Dummy: date, show, location, judge, Breed and Group result, entry, points won in Breed, Group and Grand Champion, etc. I did this for Lacey, Dutch and Delilah in their time as well.

The preliminary results entered are corrected when the AKC publishes the official results, about 10 days after the event. But they'll post the results of the first three days of a four-day weekend, then leave the last show of the weekend (or month) unposted for another three or four days. Irritates the hell out of me.

92 It's my fifth day of retirement. So far every day this week has felt like a Saturday. Oddly enough even today feels like a Saturday.

When I worked, my Saturdays and Sundays were often filled with errands I couldn't or didn't want to do after work. Now those errands can be spread over the entire week. So Saturday doesn't feel like "Saturday," if you know what I mean.

99 I watched Tender Mercies on TCM the other night. Let’s say it was the first time, as I believe I saw it in the mid-80s when it was first released on cable, but I was about the same age as the boy, Sonny, in the film at the time, and it really left no impression on me.

Duvall did a fine job in it, no doubt he deserved the Oscar. The film is so understated throughout, which I appreciated. I’m so used to over-the-top plotting and acting, that this focus on one man beating his demons with the help of a good, stoic, Christian woman surprised me.

I kept expecting bad things to happen. Like the band that rolls up to the Mariposa motel looking for Mac Sledge after word gets out who he is. I was expecting some typical 80s Hollywood redneck bullies to come out of that van, for things to go sideways, but, no, they were just earnest dudes looking up to a hero.

I miss that genuineness in film today.
I’m still thinking about it, days later.
