It turns out:
1) Woman was local and parental units have forbidden her from their home
2) She released from the clink today. She was in there due to 3 missed court dates for a shoplifting arrest
3) All the local homeless shelters wouldn't take her in due to previous disruptions/bad acting
4) No local friends will host her either due to past indiscretions

Been a busy day in Kansas. Saw three houses -- well, two; one was already "under contract" after we drove 15 minutes (at a fun 80mph at least) to get to it. One needed a LOT of work. The third was . . . generic. Nice, and I could see things I could do to make it mine. But home insurance and property taxes in Kansas are insane. Indiana has now moved back to the top in the rankings as a Wolfus bolthole. (KS is great as far as car insurance goes, though.)
In the meantime, I have one more day here, and tomorrow I'll drive up to the famous cowtown Abilene for breakfast and to see what I can see.

So the woman is infamous if no shelter will take her. Tells a good tale of reform.
In FL, when I was a RN case manager in the ED of the med center, there was a shelter where they'd have to do a tiny bit of work for room and board. No booze, no drugs, no fighting. Men only.
The shelter had a list of those who could not go there for one or all the reasons. Some would tell me they did not wanna work, and tell me they were on the list! Whine! UGH. Don't miss those days, which are far worse a decade later. You had to be dishcharged to a "safe" place vs kicked to the curb.
If the patient had a wound or pneumonia we would taxi them to a motel (known for bad wimmen) for 3 nights. Paid by the hospital or taxes, plus free meds.
One old guy, when I was new to the job, charmed me with his Irish accent. Pneumonia. Swore he'd quit and change. The ED docs told me he would not and they were correct. Months later I saw him drunk and dancing a jig at an art's festival street fair. Drunk as any Irishman could possibly be.
The stories I could tell...

I can't read stories like that and I am pretty hardened after over 5yrs in a busy ED with Trauma Service.
If the story in the news is about a baby or child I see the headlines and nope! I can't handle it.
Somehow, with one exception, on my days off I missed the worst of bad stuff with kids or teens. My HS boys were driving at the time, and I missed those car accidents my partner dealt with (there were two of us job sharing). I am thankful I was spared.
I was stuck in a room with a child abuser once. Shaken baby syndrome of a 1yr old we were flying out to Orlando. The sheriff told me to not let on we knew he was guilty, so I played it cool but was not happy to be alone with him. They wanted to wait for tests before his arrest. So I remember that one.

Piper...we fly in and out of NOLA to drive to my parent's farm in MS once a year. Two years ago in a hotel in French Quarter, a drunk or two set off the fire alarm at 0300. We twice had to go down stairs and explain to our grandson about a bad man who did this but that it was not a fire.
From that morning on, if he heard a car alarm walking around, it was "the bad man."
Upon leaving the NOLA airport, walking to the gate to fly home, he was holding my husband's hand. Saw a male and female, cuffed, walking towards us with police. He said to my dude:"They caught the bad man." He got closure and we laughed.

I may be raising pyromaniacs. I feed our grandbabies by one of our gas fireplaces. To burp this last lass I turn on the fire for her and a burp follows. At 6mo she knew the remote control was involved and stared at the fireplace then remote.
Six weeks later she stares at the fireplace til I light it for her after she has half a bottle. We laugh because she sits straight up, stares, then stares at the remote. She may think her mind controls this, as she sure does control her Nana.
I may be doing this in the dog days of summer to please her highness.

WE had two Great Danes and two teacup chihuahuas at the same time. It was hilarious that they all slept together.

When Miss Linda moved to NO for law school, she wanted to get a dog. A Newfoundland! I talked her out of it on the basis of "They are a big breed, not really an apartment dog, and you'll have to walk him in all weathers." Gradually she came around to cats, an animal she didn't know much about. Now she says she prefers felines and is glad I talked her into adopting one.

Never owned one but every GD I've met has been a big goofball. At the park I walk Elvis I met a guy who rescued a GD during the lockdown.
If they got there before us he come galloping, over like a pony as soon as we saw us and then lean on me untill he thought I had pet him enough. He was enormous and gentle as a lamb. What a sweet dog. Great breed.

I lost my Logan puppy in 2020 and it hurt worse than anything. But after a couple years, I was ready. A new dog does help with the pain, if by no other way than by keeping you very busy and distracted from grief.

At first thought this might seem counterintuitive, but I believe our society is being very cruel in not giving someone like that at least some medium term incarceration. (A year or two at least)
How is she going to survive with such fatal flaws as that? Being a woman, she is likely to fall into the clutches of some pimp and end up dead.

He is. I was told he is mostly a Treeing Tennesse Brindle when I got him from the rescue. Mostly. Never heard of them.
Some Presbyterian minister in the Ozarks decided there needed to be yet another breed of hound so he took a Coon Hound and whatever else he coud find and came up with these goofy dogs.
Always had Goldens and I love them. But this hound is pretty special.

I am here, huddled in my basement. It has been snowing all day, but lightly, and strong winds, so it has drifted deep in selected spots, but mostly the tops of the grass can still be seen. I'd say average accumulation is abut one inch. But I am glad to not be out driving in it.

He's doing a lot better, but he gets sensory overload easy.
My dad thinks he might be a coon hound mix (he is a mix, we are just not sure what.) Need to get him tested and see what's in the bouillabaisse.

When I first got him, Elvis was afraid everyone. Evem me. He'd been in couple shelters and fosters and somewhere along the way line he'd suffered some abuse.
He's living his best life now and unless you're a squirrell or a rabbit there's a pretty good chance you're going to get Elvis kisses whether you want them or not.

Just woke up.from a nap (retirement!) so I'm starting from way up there in the comments.
Wolfus, you'll find a lot. We were traveling back home after a visit with all the family left back in PA, and we stopped in Abilene for an overnight, about 3PM Tuesday. We didn't leave until Friday morning.
Pro Tip - unless you're really, really into steam engines, don't bother with the ride (assuming it's still a thing). There's nothing of organic interest along the route, and not much at the other end. Our ride turned into a "sorta adventure"* when the engine broke down at the far end and it took two hours to get the diesel engine out to tow us back.
* Adventure: bad things happening to other people, far, far away.

Switching topics, is there a standard bareboat cert one can get? My buddy who's got a Leopard 42 in the Moorings fleet (down in Grenada, he hopes to move it to the Sea of Cortez) naturally doesn't require any separate credential to take out any boat in the fleet - except in a few areas, where he needs some additional credential. Eastern Med (Croatia) and Thailand, IIRC. Don't get the Med one.

They should have grandfathered anyone older than X years of age who had operated power boats before the card was adopted. Just reading. NASA's Dragonfly mission to Titan is coming along, and will hopefully launch in 2028, but won't get there until 2034. It takes a low-energy loly-gagging trajectory.
This is an RTG powered rotorcraft drone that will fly around Titan. To fly on Titan requires only 1/40th the power to mass ratio required on Earth. Titan's atmosphere is 4 times as dense, and gravity is only 0.14 g.
Still too much power for the RTG to power on demand, and it will require battery recharges between hops. Titan's solar day is about 16 days, with 8 days of daylight. Plan is to charge the batteries with the RTG during the long nights, then have enough for multiple hops during the 8 days of daylight.

Well, usually they fail open, and the engine may not overheat, but will take too long to reach proper operating temperature, and fuel mileage will suffer. But I have seen them fail closed, so it does happen. I believe that a bad instance of overheating could affect the calibration of the thermostat. If you are doing other major cooling system work, probably not a bad idea to replace the old 'stat with a quality new one while you are in there. Usually don't cost much. And if you are looking at a 30+ year old engine, probably not a bad idea to knock out the frost plugs and pressure-wash out the gunk that has accumulated in the bottom of the water jackets.

I had to change one in the roadrunner last year. It failed closed. The gauge was climbing faster that normal so I knew immediately it was screwed. Good thing too, the asshat before me had a 195 in it, so I put a 180 in it and runs way cooler. It has hedman long tube headers, so between those and the 195 thermostat it was not fun on hot days. Much nicer now.

Speaking of those plutonium RTGs, something I didn't know. The isotope used is Pu-238. That turns out to be ideal for RTGs, very high power density and 87 year half-life, and is easily shielded.
We stopped producing Pu-238 in 1988, and there has been a shortage. NASA only had enough for two more of the things after the last Mars rover.
They finally restarted production in 2015, and made about 50 grams. They ramped up, and completed 0.5 kg shipment in 2023. Their goal is 1.5 kg per year.
