Update on the homeless woman I encountered at church today: If you remember, I put The Lovely Mrs. on the case 'cause something just didn't sound right with her story.
It turns out: 1) Woman was local and parental units have forbidden her from their home 2) She released from the clink today. She was in there due to 3 missed court dates for a shoplifting arrest 3) All the local homeless shelters wouldn't take her in due to previous disruptions/bad acting 4) No local friends will host her either due to past indiscretions No one can sniff out a BS story faster than the Mrs. Posted by: Tonypete at April 24, 2026 10:13 PM (Kyh8Y) 13

Evening, overnight satellites and satraps of the Greater Ace of Spades HQ Empire.
Been a busy day in Kansas. Saw three houses -- well, two; one was already "under contract" after we drove 15 minutes (at a fun 80mph at least) to get to it. One needed a LOT of work. The third was . . . generic. Nice, and I could see things I could do to make it mine. But home insurance and property taxes in Kansas are insane. Indiana has now moved back to the top in the rankings as a Wolfus bolthole. (KS is great as far as car insurance goes, though.) In the meantime, I have one more day here, and tomorrow I'll drive up to the famous cowtown Abilene for breakfast and to see what I can see. Posted by: Tonypete at April 24, 2026 10:13 PM (Kyh8Y) ************************** So the woman is infamous if no shelter will take her. Tells a good tale of reform. In FL, when I was a RN case manager in the ED of the med center, there was a shelter where they'd have to do a tiny bit of work for room and board. No booze, no drugs, no fighting. Men only. The shelter had a list of those who could not go there for one or all the reasons. Some would tell me they did not wanna work, and tell me they were on the list! Whine! UGH. Don't miss those days, which are far worse a decade later. You had to be dishcharged to a "safe" place vs kicked to the curb. If the patient had a wound or pneumonia we would taxi them to a motel (known for bad wimmen) for 3 nights. Paid by the hospital or taxes, plus free meds. One old guy, when I was new to the job, charmed me with his Irish accent. Pneumonia. Swore he'd quit and change. The ED docs told me he would not and they were correct. Months later I saw him drunk and dancing a jig at an art's festival street fair. Drunk as any Irishman could possibly be. The stories I could tell... We trap and kill raccoons when they become problematic. It sounds cruel, but they are predators. They are clever critters with clever hands. But they are predators. They bother nesting songbirds. They eat the eggs. They raid the bird feeders. They get a honeybun, and a 22 shot to the brain.

Posted by: four seasons at April 24, 2026 10:15 PM (3ek7K) ******** I can't read stories like that and I am pretty hardened after over 5yrs in a busy ED with Trauma Service. If the story in the news is about a baby or child I see the headlines and nope! I can't handle it. Somehow, with one exception, on my days off I missed the worst of bad stuff with kids or teens. My HS boys were driving at the time, and I missed those car accidents my partner dealt with (there were two of us job sharing). I am thankful I was spared. I was stuck in a room with a child abuser once. Shaken baby syndrome of a 1yr old we were flying out to Orlando. The sheriff told me to not let on we knew he was guilty, so I played it cool but was not happy to be alone with him. They wanted to wait for tests before his arrest. So I remember that one. She was in there due to 3 missed court dates for a shoplifting arrest 3) All the local homeless shelters wouldn't take her in due to previous disruptions/bad acting 4) No local friends will host her either due to past indiscretions No one can sniff out a BS story faster than the Mrs. Posted by: Tonypete at April 24, 2026 10:13 PM (Kyh8Y) If only Gavin Newsom would spend a megabuck or two to build her a house she could turn her life around. Posted by: Piper at April 24, 2026 10:36 PM (p4NUW) Piper...we fly in and out of NOLA to drive to my parent's farm in MS once a year. Two years ago in a hotel in French Quarter, a drunk or two set off the fire alarm at 0300. We twice had to go down stairs and explain to our grandson about a bad man who did this but that it was not a fire. From that morning on, if he heard a car alarm walking around, it was "the bad man." Upon leaving the NOLA airport, walking to the gate to fly home, he was holding my husband's hand. Saw a male and female, cuffed, walking towards us with police. He said to my dude:"They caught the bad man." He got closure and we laughed. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at April 24, 2026 10:42 PM (WONhk) 98

E'en now as I type, I'm trying to animate something complicated and RtC is like, "Yeah, you don't need to concentrate, *I* need to be petted." Two dark-colored critters streaked past in the snow. Went to the other window, and saw two brown rabbits going like 60. Didn't see any predator chasing them. These are snowshoe rabbits, technically "varying hares". They have their summer coats already; in Winter they are pure white.

We were traveling back home after a visit with all the family left back in PA, and we stopped in Abilene for an overnight, about 3PM Tuesday. We didn't leave until Friday morning. Pro Tip - unless you're really, really into steam engines, don't bother with the ride (assuming it's still a thing). There's nothing of organic interest along the route, and not much at the other end. Our ride turned into a "sorta adventure"* when the engine broke down at the far end and it took two hours to get the diesel engine out to tow us back. * Adventure: bad things happening to other people, far, far away. Just reading. NASA's Dragonfly mission to Titan is coming along, and will hopefully launch in 2028, but won't get there until 2034. It takes a low-energy loly-gagging trajectory. This is an RTG powered rotorcraft drone that will fly around Titan. To fly on Titan requires only 1/40th the power to mass ratio required on Earth. Titan's atmosphere is 4 times as dense, and gravity is only 0.14 g. Still too much power for the RTG to power on demand, and it will require battery recharges between hops. Titan's solar day is about 16 days, with 8 days of daylight. Plan is to charge the batteries with the RTG during the long nights, then have enough for multiple hops during the 8 days of daylight. About all I know of the Law of the Sea is "the more maneuverable guy is at fault."
If a speedboat hits an aircraft carrier: speedboat's fault. If an aircraft carrier hits a speedboat: still speedboat's fault. And sailing ships are "less maneuverable" than motorized ones. Posted by: Lord Percy at April 25, 2026 01:37 AM (T8RPZ) Well, usually they fail open, and the engine may not overheat, but will take too long to reach proper operating temperature, and fuel mileage will suffer. But I have seen them fail closed, so it does happen. I believe that a bad instance of overheating could affect the calibration of the thermostat. If you are doing other major cooling system work, probably not a bad idea to replace the old 'stat with a quality new one while you are in there. Usually don't cost much. And if you are looking at a 30+ year old engine, probably not a bad idea to knock out the frost plugs and pressure-wash out the gunk that has accumulated in the bottom of the water jackets. Paid 25 for new tstat, the old one would open part way but not enough on hot days. Temp gauge would get to 3/8 scale and stay there except sometimes. fan Clutch wasn't helping much. Actually a 2006 Durango just passed 300k miles. 4.7 liter. The water pump, rad and hoses were all 4 or 5 years old.

Speaking of those plutonium RTGs, something I didn't know. The isotope used is Pu-238. That turns out to be ideal for RTGs, very high power density and 87 year half-life, and is easily shielded. We stopped producing Pu-238 in 1988, and there has been a shortage. NASA only had enough for two more of the things after the last Mars rover. They finally restarted production in 2015, and made about 50 grams. They ramped up, and completed 0.5 kg shipment in 2023. Their goal is 1.5 kg per year. You wont t believe the horffic stories about INCEST we been told. Posted by: four seasons ---- I am, almost literally, surrounded by Mormons. The Temple for AZ is about 12 miles from my house. I don't think that incest is a special problem among LDS members. FLDS, OTOH.... Posted by: buddhaha at April 25, 2026 03:22 AM (xgGYP) 382
LDS (Salt Lake City) is the mainstream 17-million-member church. FLDS is a fundamentalist sect practicing polygamy. RLDS (now Community of Christ) is a more liberal, protestant-leaning group headquartered in Missouri. Posted by: m at April 25, 2026 03:26 AM (8NTVk) 383

Apparently Californium-252 is the most expensive isotope to produce, hell substance that has uses you might say, costing about $12B/lb. Fortunately, only micrograms to a few milligrams are needed for said common uses. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 25, 2026 03:43 AM (w6EFb) 390
