This was a blessing yesterday. I was in the supermarket and got in a line behind a woman who was rather argumentative ( That wasn't the blessing.) I think she might have had some dementia because she was older and kept complaining about some item she item she should get a discount on and didn't get and didn't seem to understand. That was not the blessing. Ha. The blessing was the wonderful cashier who was so patient and nice in explaining this to her several times and not getting upset. it's wonderful to have patience in that way. The woman behind me with big basket of stuff was quite patient as well.
And in the parking lot a woman just gave me a big smile ( and I hadn't smiled at her first) and it transformed her face. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 24, 2026 05:06 AM (As86G) 12

I gave it some thought. But that would cut into my enjoying retirement. Both school districts treated me poorly. The Directors and above are very woke. I am not. In Manhattan, they have a guy who has been the assistant Transportation Director for over a decade. That school system is grooming a lesbian driver, who is very nice, but not a leader, to be the new Transportation Director. I was specifically excluded from that job the last time it opened, although the best qualified. They wanted a corrupt liberal woman in charge. She went a million dollars over budget her first year. Could not compete with that to make friends of my superiors. Posted by: NaCly Dog at April 24, 2026 05:56 AM (u82oZ) 55

Oilfield Rando @Oilfield_Rando 20h When the world shut down over a 99.9999% survivable virus, I had to tell a few dozen rig hands they were out of a job. Then I had to tell even more frac hands. Then snubbing hands. Then I went home to wait for my layoff. Then I spent 6 months applying for jobs with no interviews because corporate America had banned White men in honor of Saint George Floyd, Patron Saint of Fentanyl. A great Twitter friend who I am indebted to forever got me a job with a 25% pay cut, and I had to work physically harder than I had in a decade. Anyway. Nobody in news media ever reached out for my story. And it wasn’t a unique story, I was one of a couple hundred thousand guys going through this. Posted by: m at April 24, 2026 06:10 AM (8NTVk) 63

I could see that being a deal-killer for me as well. In our yearly mandatory training there's some of that nonsense, but for the most part in the day-to-day work, I don't really encounter it, for which I am thankful and relieved. If I had to deal with that particular "sand in the gears" every day, I don't think I'd re-up the following year, and would go find something else to do. The attrition in this industry is ... higher than I expected it would be. I've seen a lot of drivers just quit without notice. Hiring and training new ones seems to be getting more and more difficult, and a lot of that is probably due to the fact that our real cost of living seems to be going up 5 to 10% each year, while wage increases (if we get them) work out to maybe 1% per year if we're "lucky". So now we have a multitude of positions that need filling in order to satisfy the routes we have locked in for next year, and I'm seeing a LOT of asks from the company to the drivers along the lines of "If you know ANYONE that you think might want to drive for us, please tell them." from the tractor article:
John Deere’s right-to-repair battles became a national story when farmers discovered they couldn’t fix their own equipment without dealer-authorized software. Lawsuits followed, then legislation. ... Deere eventually made concessions, but the damage was done. A generation of farmers learned exactly how much control they’d surrendered by buying machines loaded with proprietary code. MBAs in corporations want cash flow. They are short term thinkers. Pragmatic people want ownership. Private ownership is the basis for a thriving economy. Renting is so socialistic, associated with poverty. This is playing out all over society with arts (Youtube etc), software, and farm equipment. Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers! 'Tis Friday at last, the consummation devoutly to be wished! How are all of you?
I slept until the alarm just now. Coffee first, then a workout on the treadmill downstairs; breakfast; then a trip to look at two houses. There is a third which popped up yesterday, and I'd rather see it than the one in the small town nearby; but I'm here only today and tomorrow, so it may be too late to schedule it. I'll text my realtor lady and see. The one close by checks my "garage" box, but no basement, while this new third one has both. I'll call Progressive, which has my renter's insurance and my car, give them the addresses, and see if they can tell me what my homeowner's insurance would be. As for Roger Miller, I remember him popping up on Top 40 he same year as the Beatles. I would listen to my new transistor radio at night before going to sleep. "Dang Me" sounded like nobody else in pop music then. ON the drive here I heard "King of the Road" on a country oldies station and found I still remembered the lyrics perfectly.

If you think a diesel without EFI is "no tech," you've never opened up a mechanical injector or the pumps that feed them. In the blacksmithing age, farming was all advanced tech, and it was a sudden collapse of the farm economy in New England that made all those clever mechanics available to work for someone else in the new factory system.
Getting away from sensors and screens is good, but don't think for a moment that owners won't have to know a lot, and also know somebody. My great-uncle was kind of famous because he once re-forged a cracked iron engine block for a guy in situ, straddling a flooded ditch with a campfire to weld it. Not what our current techs call high-tech, but a technology just the same. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at April 24, 2026 07:16 AM (zdLoL) 92

Ben, this new third one had quite a bit of yard -- work for me to keep up, I know. The first, a small-ish ranch, has some yard, but with some trees for shade. The fencing looks like wire. The same with the one in the small town nearby.
The third, and the small-town one, each have 4 bedrooms -- way more than I need or want to keep up. But I love the way they look inside and out. The ranch is nice, though, and I could add a shaded patio in the back. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 24, 2026 07:17 AM (+2QQb) 94

Wolfus, factor in the cost of yard maintenance equipment.
Posted by: Ben Had at April 24, 2026 *** A mower, a weed-eater or trimmer or whatever it's called? I know I'll need those things. That's part of why I want to get my note (which to me includes tax and insurance) as low as I can. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 24, 2026 07:27 AM (+2QQb) 103
"A California guaranteed income pilot program intended to lift families out of poverty failed to lead participants to long-term financial independence, according to a new study from researchers at the University of California, Davis."

Depending upon your future lawn size and budget, you can buy a lawnmowing robot that uses gps and a reference station.
The one I have uses a camera as well that talks to a Chinese server (the manufacturer is Chinese, so I expect the imagery to end up there). I might end up putting a picture of Xi being buggered by an American eagle where the robot can see it but the HOA vermin cannot. Posted by: Richard Cranium at April 24, 2026 07:29 AM (fuyWk) 105
Crotchety Old Jarhead, do you want to tell Wolfus about yard care necessities ?

For a small lot, it would be cheaper to hire out the mowing, as they have the equipment and deal with maintenance. No capital costs needed. This is not true for large properties, but you are not looking for that. Posted by: NaCly Dog at April 24, 2026 07:30 AM (u82oZ) 107

To me, "debian" sounds like a Spanish verb form -- the future tense plural of "to owe," or something like that.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 24, 2026 07:00 AM (+2QQb) It always reminds me of "deben", the unit of currency in the Pharaoh/Cleopatra city builder games from way back when. Posted by: far cry at April 24, 2026 08:35 AM (wXgT/) 114
Just wanted you to know that you/this column I guess are the second thing I look for at the start of every day. Love the insights, love the snark.
