Thursday Overnight Open Thread - April 23, 2026 [Doof]

Welcome to the Thursday ONT for this week. Glad you could make it. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

Super rare lobster

1 in 50 million split-colored lobster found in Massachusetts

split-color-lobster-lead-rr.jpg

A two-toned lobster is set to make a splash at the Woods Hole Science Aquarium in southeastern Massachusetts. Lobstermen on the fishing vessel Timothy Michael caught the rare split-color (bilateral) lobster off the coast of Cape Cod on April 16 and donated it to the museum. This rare split coloration occurs in roughly 1 in 50 million lobsters.

“As soon as we saw this beautiful and unique lobster and were offered the chance to be her potential home, we immediately started thinking about which tank to put her in and began preparations to pick her up from Wellfleet Shellfish Company in Eastham, about an hour’s drive from Woods Hole,” aquarium biologist Julia Studley tells Popular Science.

“When something that rare comes across our docks, we see it as part of our role to share it with the broader community—Woods Hole Science Aquarium was the perfect fit for this lucky lobster,” Wellfleet Shellfish Company Chief Operating Officer Dan Brandt also tells Popular Science.

Oh wow, I'm currently a short drive away from Woods Hole - maybe I'll go see this thing tomorrow!

The team will continue to care for the crustacean during construction. Studley says it will receive a name once they get to know a bit more about its personality. Since lobsters may live up to 100 years, they want to make sure that they get the name right. The crustacean will go on display when the aquarium reopens after a major renovation in early 2027.

I guess I won't be seeing it tomorrow.

-----

Trolling or just annoying?

Remote worker stops answering his older coworker's calls after being phoned 5-6 times daily, including during flights and customer dinners

Working remotely was supposed to be the arrangement that gave professionals their autonomy back, the ability to manage their own time, set their own pace, and not have someone hovering over their shoulder every thirty minutes. And then some people took that concept and decided it meant calling their colleague five times a day until the colleague's phone becomes a source of genuine dread.

Can you follow this story at the link? It might be the most annoying webpage style I've ever seen!

20 OE suggested I update those who might be interested in my adventures today. No house viewings, though I have two slated for tomorrow. This morning I drove down to Wichita and, of course, got caught in a traffic jam as I left the Interstate. (Not to worry; I found an easier way back when I left.) The pipe shop was everything it should be, and I bought some stuff I really didn't need but wanted.

Temps have been fine: 69 this dawn, 83 and sunny this p.m. (the rain never happened here), and 79 just now as I drove back to my hotel. Locals probably think it's humid, but I tell ya, any April evening when I can drive with my windows down and not feel as though I am dipped in glue is a good one!

89 That influencer thing is weird. Last night we were watching a very old Diners Drive Ins from 2007 - and you know how they talk to the diners, so this girls looks at this baked apple thing she is eating and she (100% - like literally you guys) turns to the camera and says to Guy Fieri - "There is, like, a legit apple on this. It's so good."

Brit Lass turns to me and says in her accent, "A 'legit' apple? What are these people on?"

So I think this culture has been with us for longer than we can imagine but it's now been distilled to its bizarre (like literally bizarre you guys, yes I just typed that and it really, totally is, I am so serious guys) essence.

I don't know if I mistakenly ordered two of the same thing, or if the listing was wrong. Not going to send one back. Both types use the same 6203RR bearing, so I will just press the new bearing out of one of the plastic wheels, and press it into a used steel idler I have here. Easy to do when you have a hydraulic arbor press. And I ordered a pack of ten 6203's to keep on hand; they get used in everything. $25.00

224 First World Problems, Packaging Chapter seems open, so here's one.

For a few years now, I've noticed very few of the well-designed resealable food packs (the flat kind, for cheeses and meats) actually can be opened without scissors. They still have the little "starter" slit on both ends, but they don't "work" - meaning they don't tear very far, or don't tear low enough to actually allow opening of the package. Many of these also don't reseal very well now, either.

These are brilliantly designed things, very accustomed to them going back how long - 20-25 years? But most simply don't work any more. Manufacturing quality? Gauge or quality of the plastic material? But there's no doubt about it. I just instantly get the scissors now, for all but a few brands. Weird.

270 My in-depth 45 second investigation of the O'Keefe situation indicates there's a TRO against him and reportedly this order included (by SOP perhaps?) the requirement to surrender firearms to police of an FFL. Have no idea what the underlying problem is, only reference I saw was confusing: something to do with someone involved in one of his undercover videos. Don't see how that leads to a TRO but who knows.

Thus endeth my investigation, and most of my interest, in the matter.

271 Have the CUTCO shears, actually keep them in the kitchen but haven't used them much yet. Also have some of their knives, they've been great for us. Use them every day. Have had them sharpened once, back at the factory.

Will remember the shears next time I have a major blister pack opening operation. More nimble and smaller than the metal shears I use in the garage.

272 In 270 above that shoulda been "police OR an FFL."

273 Hope it's nicer out tomorrow-- a former cow-orker is hosting backyard cookout with other former cow-orkers invited... Haven't seen some of them for a couple years. It will be great to catch up with them!

274 Hello, Horde! 😊💕

My friend and I are Lubbock-bound tomorrow to attend the George Strait concert on Saturday night. Yes, Hubby and I just saw him in Austin, but at the time that I bought the Lubbock tickets, Strait didn't have any Austin shows scheduled. Hubby said he would rather go to Austin, so I invited my friend to go instead.

This will be a dry run for our NYC trip - we will see if we can handle each others' snoring this weekend 😂😂😂

In other news, I just found out today that the pump that was put in to battle my cancer in December can only be used for 6 months - after that, bad things start happening with the liver. So we are going to have to play it by ear in another couple of months. I may end up going back on the medication that made me lose my hair and made my nails and eyesight all wonky for a few months and then try going back on the pump regimen.

Which sucks, because the pump is working so well for me right now. My hair is starting to grow back and I can actually see well enough to drive myself places rather than depending on Paul to drive me everywhere.

We will have to wait to see what happens when I go off of this medication.

276 Hey Horde, just woke up from a three hour nap. I did yard work today we have rain in the forecast all next week.

banana dream, I will have to tell my son your CUTCO review. He went to some job fair way back when and CUTCO aggressively pursued him to join their team, he still has the cut up penny from his "interview".

JQ, the usual if you will, I have some aches and pains tonight.

277 Dam destruction in Calif goes far beyond the Infamous Four (Klamath) removals. I think it numbers closer to one hundred.

One of the dozens of official cal water and natural resources agencies recently bragged that we're living in the "dam removal-age."

All the while we see photos of their meetings and on the conference tables are lined dozens of 12oz plastic water bottles.

278 The last time I went off of the other medication, my cancer markers went up immediately and didn't come down until I had been on this new medication for a couple of rounds. Supposedly some people's cancer stabilizes without meds after treatment with the pump, but I have serious doubts that mine will do that, given past performance.

I shouldn't go around borrowing trouble, so I am going to try not to worry about it until there is something to worry about.

But I do have to admit to what another patient called "Scanxiety" - that niggling little feeling of dread that creeps up on them right before they have their next scan. The feeling of "what will this one show?" is always there....
