  • AMD's new top-of-the-line Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 processor is here. Don't buy it. (Tom's Hardware)

Not AMD's fault. They've resisted shipping CPUs with this configuration for years, claiming that it only helped performance for certain very specific workloads.

    They were right.

Also, Intel's new 270K Plus is nearly as fast for creative work at less than half the price. Yes, it's on a dead platform, but even if you'll end up throwing away both the CPU and the motherboard it may work out better value than the 9950X3D2.

9 I've been looking up how to cast video to my Roku TV with Linux Mint. Some options, but from what I've read, tricky. It's not to major of an issue. I can just use a good ole fashioned HDMI cable and plug the laptop into the TV directly. Just wondering if I could cast it too. The MacBook isn't an issue. Casts pretty easily.

15 70 years ago, in April of 1956, my martial arts Sensei, Black Belt Hall of Fame Judo Instructor, the late Karl Geis, almost blew up the world. He was an Air Force radio traffic analyst stationed in Japan on a Sunday. He was the only analyst on duty, when he noticed that all of the Russian Bomber call signs had launched toward the US simultaneously. He called in the LT who was serving as Officer of the Day, and showed him the data. The LT said to him, "What do we do?" Karl said "Call NORAD and report this." They got the General in charge at NORAD and told him. He called President Eisenhower, who ordered an all out nuclear strike on the USSR by SAC. Meanwhile in Japan they had scrambled all the other Traffic Analysts - who confirmed Karl's analysis. In 1956 there was no "Fail Safe". When SAC launched, the bombers were on their way to their targets. All of the foreign analysts were called in and again confirmed Karl's analysis. Suddenly a French analyst shouted "Those Idiots have switched their Civilian and Military call signs. This is the resupply of Siberia after the winter" when he saw a plane land in Siberia. When SAC was recalled the lead B-52s were over Soviet Air space.

16 Good morning, everyone. I hope you all had a blessed day yesterday . I was over at the local senior care center with the Bible study group- a small group of lovely people who meet twice a month for study. Yesterday we were looking at Revelation 5:9-13 which is about living creatures and angels all singing " Worthy is the lamb who was slain" and "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!"

Yesterday I went to the "Faithpot" site and there was a video of Ce Ce Winans singing a song about this passage:

35 Evening and morning, all! Slept solidly but not long, after a dream where I was attempting to direct -- and star in -- a TV episode about a husband-wife acting team hosting one of those old-style quiz shows like What's My Line? You know, when they hired people with actual wit and sophistication to appear on TV even if they weren't that glamorous-looking, like Bennett Cerf, Henry Morgan, or Dorothy Kilgallen.

The trouble? I had no real script, and was depending on some of the other actors to improvise. A nightmare indeed.

Anyway, I am awake, and have to head off to the tire and service shop about my headlight in a couple of hours. How 'bout choo?

43 > 34 I recently saw a YouTube video claiming that in 1952, an Air Force F94-A shot down a Nuclear armed Russian B-29 copy over Alaskan territorial waters.

The Russkis have been attempting to penetrate Alaskan airspace for many decades. This rarely makes the Lower 48 news, but it literally happens all the time.

According to a friend who should know, in recent history the game has been to intercept the Russians before they get within cruise missile range of Anchorage.

They don't always succeed.

I can totally believe that a Russian plane was downed back then... there are areas that are still damned remote today, much less in 1952, and there weren't a zillion satellites taking pictures, either.

I read his memoir earlier this year. It includes a section where he lists each movie or TV series he was in, and sums it up as good or bad. For instance, he mentions 1966's Mister Buddwing and says, "To this day I don't know what it was about. What were they thinking?"

Garner was great in the movies Support Your Local Sheriff, and Support Your Local Gunfighter.

95 The first cigarette I ever smoked was in Israel. Provided by the UN for the Arabs in Gaza. The brand was Noblesse. Poor Israelis would also smoke them. Even young children in Israel often smoke. The kid who gave them to me had an English language joke for me about them: "No money? NOBLESSE!"

Nicotine is soo addictive.

For the Arabs smoking in the UK, they will not like the NHS care plan for lung cancer. It's just a little better than Canadian Health Care.

98 On topic: Phoronix's benchmarks show the 9950X3D2 is actually a good boost for serious work: programming, scientific apps, video encoding, 3D model creation, etc, etc. But sites like Tom's Hardware rate CPUs only on games, and games are almost always limited by the video card, not the CPU.

I used to work for a company with a division that made cellulose acetate for cigarette filters. Part of my job was to monitor patent and literature publications that might be of interest.

I noticed that the velocity of publications followed a trend:

- Very little in poor countries
- Vastly more as they got richer and started enjoying cigarettes
- A decline when they discovered these things were killing them.

Yeah tell that to my dad who was a chain smoker for most of his life and still weighed over 300 lbs until he developed cancer, from the smoking. Also bilateral emphysema. Oh and another form of cancer (from the smoking) that was detected while he was being treated for the first cancer.

And in the "Everything Is More Complicated Than You Think" category, just making the cellulose acetate tow to make cigarette filters is a long, multi-step process that starts with wood pulp and ends in a miles-long strip of material fed into a box and shipped off to cigarette manufacturers.

The right low-beam headlight bulb is out, and it's HID and very hard to get to. I had the left done about two years ago. It's complicated and things have to be moved out of the way. The tire and service store has been recommended to me by locals -- "They do good work."

Otherwise Salina has been great, perfect weather, good streets. If they get done with this in a reasonable time, I might hop on the I-135 and drive down to that pipe shop in Wichita I've heard about.
